Dutton keeps tweeting and writing that the Rockies are trying to get Cruz from the Royals and he thinks that the Royals would have to eat part of his contract. He also wrote that the Royals are? or should be? interested in the deal.

I hope they get something decent for him

He’s actually a pretty good reliever, IMO.

whether he's good or not, TRADE CRUZ NOW!!!!

sort of like you said, only with more caps lock.

unless he could become a type A/B as a FA…

I'd like to resurrect his trade value

But if Colorado is desperate and willing to overpay a little, I have no problem dealing him.

Unless you are getting a decent prospect I don't see the point

it’s not like dumping his salary would alleviate that much. You can always trade him at the break if he is having a good season.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

I looked at him and he wouldn't be a bad trade

I don’t like the idea of eating 1.25M+

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

Cruz was good a couple of years ago

Even if you think (and I don’t) that he’s still capable of his 2007, when he put up 0.7 WAR, a marginal win is going for about $3.5M these days. He’s getting paid $3.25 for 2010 + his 2011 buyout is $0.5M.

So, In this market, even if he is capable of his 2007 performance, the Royals should feel happy to dump his contract. If they want anything of value back, they should expect to eat a sizable chunk of it, maybe all of it..

good for them

I have a feeling teams are more likely to overpay for relievers at the trade deadline

So the Royals might be better served to hold on to him and hope for a good first half.

by vivaelpujols on Mar 21, 2010 3:43 AM EDT up reply actions

when is the last time this happened at all?

sure, they should hold on to him and see if they can get rid of his salary, but they can’t hope for anything of value for him, like, say, a Chris Perez

KC is paying Cruz 3.25M and reports from MLBTR has Beimel landing around 2M

So if KC has to eat 1.25M+ I don’t see the reason for the trade on KCs hand. It’s not like they have time to reinvest that money somewhere else and I don’t think they would get a significant prospect in return.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 18, 2010 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

But it can be a case of addition by subtraction.

If we think we have some better blocked options in the bullpen (Wood, etc.).

He's not blockin him there is room in the pen

I believe the difference is that Beimel is FA

and it would only be about the money. KC would need a player coming back from the Rockies. Beimel has a little track record with CO. so that may be a factor. Living in CO and following the Rockies, Cruz would help the team more than Beimel. Rockies have a deep farm system. 4 years ago they picked right behind the Royals, since they have been in playoffs twice.

It's a shame we can't get other teams to "do a Royals."

Imagine, getting a couple AAA guys out of this. Man, that would be cool.

Is Hawpe bad?

I was under the impression he was an OBP guy with some power. I’d take Hawpe over anyone in our outfield with the possible exception of DeJesus.

Maybe I sound like an idiot here. I did once say Carlos Febles would be the better of the Dos Carlos, so it certainly wouldn’t be the first time.

by big matt on Mar 18, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Hawpe is seriously THE WORST fielder in baseball

other than maybe Mike Jacobs

over the last three years, he’s averaged -33.8 runs (UZR) in the outfield.

Yeah, he can hit decently — although it’s greatly inflated by Coors (with a bit of NL pitching thrown in).

He’s really a DH-only guy at this point, and he doesn’t hit well enough to do that and carry his salary.

I was talking Mets baseball with this guy at a bar last night

I told him I liked Murphy and he was like, “Yeah, he’s OK, but I’m hoping Mike Jacobs gets the starting job.” He then went on to tell me how good Jacobs is and how going to the Mets (team that drafted him?) is going to “energize him.”

I don’t really know what to say when people talk like this. I don’t want to burst their bubble, and part of me thinks that being a baseball fan would probably be more fun if I could delude myself like that. But man, Mike Jacobs? I felt like I was talking to Dayton Moore.

by big matt on Mar 18, 2010 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel sorry for Jacobs

I mean, I’ve had a lot of fun at his expense, but apparently he’s a super-great guy.

But, yeah, Daniel Murphy kinda sucks, but when you hope hit works out that Mike Jacobs might start… you might just be a Mets fan.

I don't know man, how cool could a guy with facial hair like that really be?

I tend to just assume all baseball players are pretty lame in real life. That would certainly explain the unbelievably high percentage of them that wear necklaces.

Just looked up Murphy’s stats. He does kind of suck. And he’s a terrible fielder too, right? Seems like the Mets should have a better option at first (Gload?).

by big matt on Mar 18, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

so, if we likely won't get much for Cruz now

why not see if he has a good first half and then trade him for an actual prospect when teams are desperate for relief help

Yeah, for $3.75 million (the cost of Cruz's salary going forward)

a team could sign three of the top ten Latin American prospects during this summer’s signing period, or buy out the same number of college commitments in the June draft, all of whom would be better prospects than the Paulo Orlando type the Royals could get for Cruz at the deadline.

I like how...

people want to quote numbers on players without actually doing the research.

Hawpe maybe be a shotty defender, but his road OPS is just as good as his “Coors” OPS.

Hawpe would be a good add for the Royals, but the Royals usually don’t sign or trade for talented pros. Just has beens and maybes.

I like how… people want to quote numbers on players without actually doing the research.

Here are some relevant numbers:

2007 1.4 WAR
2008 -0.6
2009 1.3
3-year average = 0.7 WAR
CHONE 2010 projection = 1.6 WAR

WAR includes offense, defense and position. He’s a good hitter, but he’s such an awful fielder that it really kills his value. An average player is about a 2.0 WAR. And what he’s done and projected to do in these numbers are playing half of his games at Coors Field and almost all of his games against NL pitching. You have to discount his numbers at least a little if he moves to a more neutral park in the AL (think maybe 1.4 WAR). So he’s a below average player. I really don’t think yet another below average player (who isn’t exactly cheap) would be a good add for the Royals.

I’m no expert on Hawpe, but what are we missing? Sometimes people draw conclusions from too little or conflicting defensive data, but in Hawpe’s case, there is a pretty large sample of data (5,728 innings in the OF) and he has been consistently horrendous. It really looks like his offense – defense = a below average player.

Not for the money

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 19, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, no way
2010:$7.5M, 2011:$10M club option ($0.5M buyout)
if traded, Hawpe may void 2011 club option

His approx. 1.4 WAR in KC would be worth about $6M. And we’ve already got cheaper OFers who can approximate that level of total production (offense and defense).

The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Mar 19, 2010 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Are you his agent or something?

Why would KC trade and take on more salary when they could sign Dukes for little to nothing and have more team control less money and actually can play passable defense. Hawpe is a DH only and if you aren’t gonna pick up his option then KC could’ve signed Jim Thome for 1/2M.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.

by kcscoliny on Mar 19, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Isn't Hawpe an impending FA too?

I don’t get why we’d want to acquire someone that will be here for just a few months.
