Dutton: Gordon Won't Be on Opening Day Roster
"It’s not going to happen," Hillman said. "That’s official. If we force it, we might set his (recovery) back."
Hillman said he discussed the decision late Tuesday with Gordon, who has progressed to the point in his recovery that he is able to take swings against soft-toss pitches.

Only Dayton Moore's Royals
could let the issue of Jose Guillen’s playing time and roster spot create a “crunch”

Do you think that this decision has anything to do with a numbers crunch?
Do you really think that if there were room for everyone they wanted, they’d start Gordon in the majors? Do you think the injury rehab is just a pretence? I was going to make a sarcastic post to that effect, but I thought it too silly.
Also, do you think that in the same situation every other organization would just release Guillen? While it is obvious to me that this is the right thing to do, I am equally certain that other organizations would hold onto him as well. It’s not like every other GM in baseball recognizes every guaranteed contract as a sunk cost and ignores $12M salaries and isn’t desperate to get some value out of the remaining year of that contract. And then there’s the overvaluing of raw power. It’s not like every other GM (or even the vast majority of them) has fully embraced every progressive idea.
I’m just sayin’…

Hoagy = This?

Terrible comparison
Iggy is a Hall-of-Famer. Hoagy, not so much.
That seems like a more appropriate name.

Well
pre-80’s Iggy Pop was great… I’m not sure about the rest. Raw Power and Lust for Life are two albums that are hard to top. Although, I’m of the the opinion that Bowie may be more responsible for LfL’s greatness.
He Did The
Same for Mott The Hoople. All The Young Dudes just stands out like a diamond in a dung heap.

Funhouse is the Stooges best..........
TV Eye, Dirt, Funhouse, 1970 etc..etc..etc…. and the new Iggy Pop is kind of a trip. Not too bad for an aging trailblazer. All you kids out there who think Green Day is the shit, should do your homework and check out Stooges, The Damned, the Velvets, Richard Hell, Birthday Party, Radio Birdman, Black Flag, and maybe The Saints to get a handle from whence it came.

True Dat......
Lots of good stuff came out of NY back in the day, eh? Some of the new stuff isn’t too bad, are you familiar with “The Liars” ? Shifting gears to footy, nice 1/4 final draw, Barca v Arsenal. The two prettiest teams on the continent. Hopefully someone with a little flair can defeat the negative/Italian style conservative bad ass “special one”. As much as I hate Man Yoo, got to admit that Sr Alex gets it done yr after yr. Who would have thought that they could loose Ronny & Tevez and not miss a beat?

well, maybe not "only"
Name a current organization that is paying a sub-replacement level guy this much money to stick around. And no, Vernon Wells may be bad and horriblyl overpaid, but he isn’t replacement level.
The point is that it’s an easy decision — the choice isn’t between Callaspo and Guillen when Gordon comes back. just cut Guillen.
Didn’t the Tigers do a similar thing with Gary Sheffield last spring?

Not at the moment, but I think that is, in part, happenstance. There have been incidents in the recent past, and I think there will be in the not too distant future.

Or just waive Fields. Still not the right decision, but that doesn’t involve a lot of pain for the organization.

I’m not sure of the details, but this kind of thing certainly does happen. But I wouldn’t say that every team cuts loose deadwood, without regard to how much money they’ve invested in such player.

yes, but that would be my answer even if Gordon wasn't hurt
suck up the $12M and cut Guillen loose.

Someone will be injured and ready to move to the DL :(

I think excuse #1 will be expiring/bad contracts
Injuries do not help though

Play Callaspo. Rest Gordon. Cut Guillén.

Cutting Jose
would be the best move of the entire “amazing” off-season… surpassing the release of Mike Jacobs.
But it was "the best offseason in the history of whatever"
How can you improve on that?

Roster Flexibility
Gordon, 15 day DL
Meche, 15 day DL
Off days make 5th starter 15 day DL
Now you have some spots to play with so no one important hits waivers before rosters are finalized. Maybe a way to keep Osuna, Maier and Kila while waiting for natural attrition to occur.

Maier should be the "beneficiary"
Although sweet freedom from this organization may actually be of more benefit personally in the long run.
