I know Ahab is from Moby Dick...
But all I know about Moby Dick is “I am Ishmael” and there is a whale… So unless I just missed the Prospect named Ishmael Narwhal Im not sure I get the reference to Ahab

no hosmer is interesting
gotta love a guy who is becoming all over the place in terms of these mostly meaningless rankings
What he does in AA (whenever he gets there) will push him far in one direction or the other

Prediction:
Hosmer hits .205/.271/.302 over the first month, including a monster weekend stand, then gets promoted to AA to be with his Buddy Moose, who is smoking to the tune of .273/.281/.398

Or is it...
…hos-cess? ;)
"Sir,--It has been wittily remarked that there are three kinds of falsehood: the first is a 'fib,' the second is a downright lie, and the third and most aggravated is statistics." *The National Observer* (June 13, 1891): p. 93-94.
And by the way
this is a joke about the front office’s promotions last season, I actually still have faith in Hosmer and Moustakas (although I think Moustakas is more likely a solid regular than any sort of superstar)

I try to not have faith in any prospect...ever
I try to expect failure from prospects and I usually get what I expect. That isn’t a crack at the Royals or their prospects. That’s just how prospects are. Even guys with great tools and great “projection” usually fail.

well, "faith" is a relative term
I guess I should have called it “reasonable hope”

Hosmer is such a wildcard
Hope his productivity was negatively affected by the injuries, not just an overall lack of talent.
he definitely had a weird year
the glasses/contacts thing, rumors off the field, being over-promoted for no reason (or as punishment or tough love or just changing his environment… who knows)
But this is what I don't get
Moose has been pretty average to poor for 2 years and still people slobber over him. Hosmer, supposedly already a higher upside talent shows a lack of power but is otherwise reasonably and gets hammered for it.
It all matters not. But there seems to be a double standard at play. All that “leadership” that Moose has I guess.
there are tons of rumors about hosmer being a very hard party-er
I think a lot of the gurus want to see him reestablish himself a little, b/c the flame out potential is now higher, and they don’t want an embarassing rating
" they don’t want an embarassing rating"
which is why they were so hesitant in their pre-draft praise of Hos

He keeps getting older, they stay the same age

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

i read a lot about hosmer's swing not looking good last year
i’m sure it’s the same way with people not rating kila high. if his swing looks ugly, the better talent at the higher levels won’t be as worried about pitching in the zone, negating hosmer’s superior plate discipline.

Moose had a very good rookie season
Those stats in the context of his age, his very pitcher friendly league and his very pitcher friendly home park are quite good. His sophomore season wasn’t quite as good, but there are still league and park effects. So I think Moose’s performance record is somewhat better than what you describe. Again, he’ll have a big chance to succeed or fail in a more neutral environment in the Texas League.

The issue with Moose is patience
If he’s patient, hitting with his kind of power, he will be a very good hitter.
average to poor for 2 years
Leading the Midwest league in Home Runs as a teenager is anything but poor or average. Go research and see how many have done it.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
And he still didnt get on base much
Despite the prodigous power. And there still remain questions about his glove at 3B.
Look. I’m not knocking Moustakas. He’s obviously still a very good prospect. But he hasn’t been all that great thus far in his pro career. Neither has Hosmer. But his flaw (a power outage) seems to be more fixable than Moose’s (plate discipline).
He showed less athleticism than the scouts previously thought.
That combined with his little success have hurt his status. Originally alot thought he could be a corner outfielder and now with those thoughts gone he becomes a less valuable commodity as a 1b only guy.
I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal.
CAn you imagine how good they would be if Mark Shapiro understood the draft?

the guys at lets go tribe really seem to have soured on him
and antonelli (I think)
sometimes I have a hard time gauging
I think he does a good job overall
and his trades get good guys inthe high minors, they just don’t produce superstars out of the draft
I stil think he’s easily the class of the central (excluding Kenny’s WTF awesome seasons out of nowhere)

the thing I love about houston
there’s no clash between having a good MLB team and having a good system, or at least a mediocre system
but they’re sticking to their plan
if I had to bet on a team to lose 100 this season
it would be Houston
their poor fans. Somehow, this team is run even worse than the Royals. They squandered the primes of some wonderful players (Berkman, Oswalt), and now it looksl ike they aren’t even smart enough to trade them for a rebuild

well..
they did go to two playoffs and one world series. i agree that they haven’t exactly capitalized on those guys, but there are teams who’ve done less with more…
by billexgordler on Mar 3, 2010 4:02 PM EST up reply actions
oh, I agree
I think Shapiro is a really good GM, but most of their best players during Shapiro’s years have not been guys who were drafted by them. Yeah, CC and VIctor Martinez were, but Milton Bradley, Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Travis Hafner, Choo, and others came over in (excellent trades). I was just noting that if his drafting would rise to the level of his trades and stuff, they’d be that much better.

wasn't turner supposed to be very comparable to melville?
considering he hasn’t thrown a major league pitch that i’m aware of, 25 seems be ranking him a little high.
I will have more of a write up later on the Royals, but just got done with a comparison of 13 rankings
http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2010/3/3/1334997/wisdom-of-the-crowds-2010-prospect
It is pretty much Montgomery then Crow, then Myers, Moose, Hos and Arguelles grouped together.
- .-. ..- … – / – …. . / .—. .-. - .. . … …
Based on the signing...
…hype, I’m surprised to not see Arguelles in the top 100? – TL

did we re-acquire them?
I’m going to say Brayan Pena. Too young to be considered anything but a prospect. All that smiling obviously means he isn’t a competitor.

A list
Actually, it’s hard to root against prospects, and I hope that all of these guys break through top the extent they can. I actually felt a little bad as I was typing this list. I’d put these in the “most disappointing prospect” list instead of “least favorite.”
1) Sam Runion: Please, oh please put him in the bullpen and give me some hope. Please????
2) Derrick Robinson: If we wanted Joey Gathright, we should have kept Joey Gathright.
3) Jarrod Dyson: I look and see Dee Brown. That’s disappointing.
4) Jason Taylor: brain/attitude stuff—the multiple suspensions have killed his career so far. That’s too bad, cause he showed some pop in 2008 and a decent ability to get on base through most of his minor league career. Along with Runion, the proof that Ladnier generally sucked at 2nd round picks.
5) Ryan Eigsti: I don’t know that anybody considers him an actual prospect or just a soon-to-be career minor leaguer, but I saw some list in the last couple of days (was it here?) ranking catchers in the system by tools, and Eigsti ranked third in the “most athletic” category. He might be athletic, but the dude can’t hit.
These guys don’t actually make that list, but there are a bunch of random other guys taking up space in the system without any evidence they’ll ever contribute: Blake Wood (he’s seemingly been around forever), Blake Johnson (maybe I’m irrationally blaming Blake Wood for being Blake Johnson), Brent Fisher (ditto), Jose Duarte, Paolo Orlando, Matt Knyginyski (or however you spell that—I wanted this guy to succeed for that name along), Mario Lisson, Chris McConnell/Kurt Mertins (I’m not certain they are not the same person). With that said, many of these guys were on a very good NWA team last year, so maybe they are better than I think they are.
There are also random guys who I really like, although they probably aren’t prospects anymore if they ever were, e.g., Clint Robinson, Nick Van Stratten, Anthony Seratelli.
That seems like a more appropriate name.

i don't know if blake johnson is still with the organization
and i’ve heard fisher is retired.
dyson might be like dee brown in terms of overall production should he reach the majors, but the way i understand it, he’s an outstanding outfielder without any of the offensive potential dee brown had.
by 9il on Mar 3, 2010 6:24 PM EST up reply actions
I knew Fisher ended last year on injury rehab
I didn’t know he decided to leave.
Did they get rid of Johnson this off-season? He started a full season’s worth of games in AA last year.
That seems like a more appropriate name.
by CentralChamps20?? on Mar 4, 2010 9:34 AM EST up reply actions
Whatever happened
to Stratten?? Did he wash up? Not good enough nubers…….. what I implore?
He was in Wilmington last year
He’s just gone through the system very, very, very slowly
That seems like a more appropriate name.
by CentralChamps20?? on Mar 4, 2010 9:29 AM EST up reply actions
Is Jason Taylor actually going to play this year?
There should be an over/under on games played. I’m thinking 36.
He came back from suspension
and played the rest of the year last year.
That seems like a more appropriate name.
