Danny Duffy, still a player to watch

I like how the top three of the top 10 of 2009 aren’t on the team anymore.

If Bianchi, Crow, and Dwyer (subtracting Duffy) are gone this time next year……

same thing for our

opening day catcher

Zapp Brannigan/Dayton Moore quote of the day: "Yes, comets! The icebergs of the sky. By jackknifing from one to the next at breakneck speed, we might just get some kinda gravity boost". and also "Kif old friend, I don't know which disgusts me more. Your cowardice or your stupidity! Does there come a time

when you need to put up a serious line-up to see how it will shake out when the season starts (like next week)? Or doesn’t it really matter?

I depends on how you measure your "serious"

In terms of grit? moxie? one set of tools? OBP? gamey-ness?

There are any number of ways to optimize a line up.

Orioles Sign Joey Gathright
By Tim Dierkes [March 30, 2010 at 7:48am CST]
The Orioles signed outfielder Joey Gathright to a minor league deal, reports MLB.com’s Brittany Ghiroli. The Blue Jays released Gathright on Sunday after a poor spring.

Gathright, 29 in April, spent most of 2009 with Baltimore’s Triple A club. He hit .329/.386/.376 there, swiping 24 bags in 80 games.

Not because I want to go but because I didn’t start with a high enough price.

How deep does the average starting bullpen go in terms of winning talent?

I know it doesn’t really matter if there’s no offense, but it seems (to a naive newbie) like me that even a team with only 3 good to great starters guarantees a maximum of 97 wins… which seems pretty darn good.

by philofthenorth on Mar 30, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not too sure

but the correct use of bullpen arms, how many games that are close, player breakdown……..

all goes into trying to get those elusive wins. (Royallyspeaking of course)

by MarioVanPeebles Republic of China on Mar 30, 2010 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions

To get to that many wins

is awfully difficult even in the best of circumstances. As far as bullpen (non-starting) pitchers, you’d want all of them to be pretty solid. I don’t really think that having 3 good to great starting pitchers is quite enough. As an example, Zack Greinke was the BEST starting pitcher in the AL last year. He started 33 games. Of those 33, the Royals managed to win 17. Some of that was crappy offense and some was bad bullpen work behind him.
