Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

Hi, my name is Richard, and I've never been a baseball fan.

No, seriously.

The only time I ever followed the sport was going to Phoenix Firebirds games prior to the Diamondbacks starting up in Arizona.

The only time I ever played the sport I went 0-4 and had 3 errors, though I did make a nice one handed grab on a line drive between 1st and 2nd.

The only game I ever watched from top of the 1st through the bottom of the 9th on television was Game 7 of the 2001 World Series.

I'm a basketball fan.  Born and bred.  Played the game, loved the game, follow the game obsessively... which is remarkably easy when your team is the Phoenix Suns.

But I find myself at a crossroads both in my fandom and my life.  I've managed to latch onto nearly every other sport out there in the past 30 years with the sole exception of baseball, that obscure niche sport occasionally referred to as "The National Pastime."   I've got to try once in my life to follow a team for a season - every game, every call up, reassignment & trade, every injury, every change to the lineup.  If I can do this for an entire season and still not appreciate baseball, I likely never will.  But at least I can say that I tried.

Star-divide

My lovely wife (and native Kansas Citian) and I are moving away from my beloved Northern Arizona to KC this summer.  KC has no pro basketball; it could even be argued that it has no pro football either (sorry Chiefs fans). Next to New York, Chicago or Boston it seems like the perfect place to get into baseball.  We're moving at the end of July, late into the season, but not so late into it that I couldn't pop up to Kauffman Stadium to catch a few games.  Plus the Royals seem like a plucky underdog each season... who can resist the plucky underdog?

So I'm jumping on the Royals bandwagon.  I'm making them my team.  I'll follow this season, and hopefully it will shake me out of the Baseball-less stupor I've been walking around in for my entire life.  I'm giving baseball the chance it has always deserved but I never bothered to give it.

I'm hoping that this community will be my surrogate baseball family.  I'll be on here asking stupid questions, asking your opinions and begging for your patience.  Take pity on me, teach me the game and try not to get too irritated with me - after all, we've got at least 8 months to put up with each other.

I'm looking forward to trying this sport, trying this city and trying this team.

Hi, my name is Richard, and I'm hoping to become a baseball fan.

I think the Royals bandwagon has room for one or two more guys.

Better join now, the process is about to work. Then you’ll be too late…

Well, I'm a skinny guy, so you've still got a bit of room after me.

By “the process” I’m assuming that you guys have had a long-term approach with the roster that you’re expecting to pay dividends this season? I know Greinke is a stud from the SportsCenter highlights, but who else should I be playing attention to?

by Genesius on Mar 30, 2010 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey

Guess I’ve done the opposite. Started in KC and now living in PHX (BTW – I also find the Suns entertaining despite not really being an NBA fan, and I have an odd facination with hockey that I can’t explain – Go Coyotes!!!)

About “The Process” – I’ll try to give the short version. KC management doesn’t really like to be questioned or to divulge too many details. At one point, we (the fans) were pretty much told that we need to “trust the process”. Of course, at no point were we told WHAT the process involved (kinda like the Matrix “No one can be told what it is.”). So that catchphrase has become sort of a parody. When the Royals make some unexplainable and/or stupifying move, its obviously part of “the process”!

Welcome!

I’m here for a similar reason – having a place to talk about my team with people that love them and the sport. I haven’t been lucky enough to live near KC for 17 years (which is a few years more than half my life), so I live vicariously through the people in this community that are actively spending time around KC.

Hopefully our pessimism doesn’t rub off on you too quickly. There is a lot to like (great park, great starter in Zack Greinke, some impressive young players coming up through the minor leagues, etc.), but we often ignore those things to go after the worse aspects. Don’t let it wear you down too fast!

If there’s anything you are wondering about, feel free to ask. There are a lot of knowledgeable people around and your question will be answered in one way or another.

by MinnesotaRoyal on Mar 30, 2010 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the welcome!

I’m plenty used to pessimism. I’ve been a Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals fan since the mid-90’s and have plenty of experience in that particular area.

I’m really looking forward to catching some games at Kauffman late summer. The only ballparks I’ve been to are the old Phoenix Muni and Chase Field. Looking forward to going to a pro park with some actual history behind it.

Here’s a question for you too: Who’s the division rival of the Royals? I’m assuming there’s got to be at least one team I should start hating actively.

by Genesius on Mar 30, 2010 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty much the whole division

Always hate the White Sox and generally the Tigers. The Indians are less of a concern and I have never been able to dislike the Twins for some reason (maybe I spent too much time up there to hate them), but other people could tell you what they think. And of course we’re always up against St. Louis since they’re across the state.

Otherwise, I always advocate hating the Yankees and, at times, the Red Sox.

Oh, and one of the other lesser-known “rivalries” is with the Mariners, which is called the Battle for Grass Creek after the town of Grass Creek, WY, that is essentially equally spaced between Seattle and KC.

The AL Central is fairly hate-free

Most Royals fans don’t particularly like the Indians or Tigers, but there’s no real rivalry there. Some Royals fans actually like/respect the Twins (some don’t). The White Sox are the most universally disliked Central team, but there’s no burning rage against them.

One problem is that the Royals have been a doormat team for so long that no one has a rivalry with us. The closest thing to a real one is St. Louis, but we only play them like six times a year. There was a Royals-Yankees rivalry in the late seventies, but that’s over now.

Welcome

I played baseball so much when I was young, it took the fun right out of it. However, I found this site while trying to find more data on the Royals and I have not looked back.

I think when trying to understand baseball to a level that will make it very exciting is learning every thing that people use to evaluate a player, team, and franchise.

At first learning about some of these advance stats is rough, but it will make you look at the game in a way that it is now my favorite professional sport to follow.

I'm getting into the advanced stats of Basketball and dig it.

What are the metrics that would be most useful to me as a new fan to try and understand though? Seems like there’s a ton of advanced stats in baseball, not sure where to begin delving into.

by Genesius on Mar 30, 2010 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Here are a few nontraditional stats to get you started

Hitters: OBP, SLG, wOBA, and WAR use www.fangraphs.com

Pitchers: FIP or xFIP in place of ERA, and WAR

Once you kinda get those, there’s a lot to look at, but I’d probably start with those.

Any others I’m forgetting?

by AxDxMx on Mar 30, 2010 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

OPS, Though Deeply

Flawed, is a simple improvement on BA. OPS+ is still pretty easy to understand, too. For pitchers, the WHIP, K/9, etc. are quick snapshots of pitcher performance that give a lot better idea of the pitcher’s true performance than traditional counting stats and ERA.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Mar 30, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

One, not to really track, that shuts up is BABIP

On the defense side, UZR is the best available for now.

Fangraphs has the sweet new dashboard with pretty much the stats to know at the top.

You’ll absorb it through osmosis. The game threads, BTW, are not for the faint hearted. ST isn’t bad, but once the games count it gets pretty intense at times. Mostly civil, but nonetheless intense.

for starters

The focus here for some time now (for better or worse) gravitates towards how amazingly awful the ownership and front office are and have been for over a decade. As the “plucky underdog” you need good management to succeed against the teams with bigger resources, and right now the Royals don’t have that. What they do have is a farm system that is improving as it is rebuilt from it’s desolate state due to the previous GM. The major league team isn’t built to win, so we root for the players we like and make fun of the players we don’t. The bright side is following the prospects and hope they keep progressing through the system.

I'm definitely planning on it.

It seems like it’ll be easier participating in a game thread for baseball than it is for basketball. Plenty of time between pitches to catch up.

I can confirm this

More importantly, there’s more immediate interaction with the community in a baseball game thread than in a basketball game thread. In basketball, people are mostly just posting the equivalent of quick tweets then turning back to the action; there usually isn’t any “conversation” except during timeouts and halftime.

Baseball, you’ve got more time to kill while watching the game, so more electronic jaw-flapping ensues.

This space for rent.

Hey

I’m a (relatively) recent convert to Royals fandom myself, i.e., didn’t grow up with them. This is a great community — be careful, it’s addictive. I started commenting occasionally here a couple of years ago, and now I’m a big ol’ blog nerd myself.

Need to know

Kauffman is a big park

Royals hitters are “Gap” hitters.

Doubles are lovely.

Homers are scarce. Especially when your manager doesn’t give power hitting prospects like the Hawaiian Walk a shot.

KIla KAY-AHHHH-HOOOOOEY.

Thanks for the tips!

But what is a “gap” hitter?

by Genesius on Mar 31, 2010 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

It's a lot like a "line drive hitter"

Basically, guys who will hit the ball hard(ish) but not hit many home runs. Literally the term refers to hitting the ball into the gaps between OFers. Basically the deep space in the OF between LF and CF and between CF and RF are referred to, generally as “the gaps.”

Although "doubles hitter"

doesn’t really mean a guy who hits doubles, it’s a way the announcers try to be nice to a guy who can’t hit homers

Gap hitter

A gap hitter is a hitter with power to the alleys, resulting in doubles.

The Royals park is big, considered pitcher friendly, so a team who plays 82 games in such a park, would look to build a team of line drive hitters, with some speed too

Thanks for the info! Good to know.

So Kauffman is kind of like the opposite of Coors Field?

by Genesius on Mar 31, 2010 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Kind of

Kauffman Stadium actually plays pretty neutral. It isn’t an extreme pitcher’s park. Coors Field is an extreme hitter’s park, but not because it is small. The dimensions are actually pretty big (which helps gap hitters). Coors Field gives up so many home runs because the high elevation helps the ball carry much better there than anywhere else in the majors.

agreed - we have to find something to occupy our time

since we can’t sit around counting our stacks of wins, and it tends toward well-thought-out analysis at both the ML and MiL level.

By jackknifing from one to the next at breakneck speed, we might just get some kinda gravity boost". and also "Kif old friend, I don't know which disgusts me more. Your cowardice or your stupidity! Welcome Richard....IF YOU DARE!!!!

You should know what you are getting into here man. I grew up in Springfield, Missouri and at the tender age of 10 years old was faced with a decision – become a Cardinals fan or become a Royals fan. I had always pulled for both, but then 1985 happened. In that year I was forced to pick a side, and I chose the Royals.

In essence, I traded one series of happiness for a lifetime of sorrow (sort of like a deal with the devil).

So, if you want to be a Royals fan, understand this:

1. You will always be disappointed, yet on the inside be secretly optimistic each and every new season.
2. You must be comfortable with complete ineptitude out of your leaders.
3. You must bow down at the alter of George Brett.

This is your challenge, should you choose to accept it.

I once had hope...now I have Moore.

I gladly kneel at the altar of Pessimism and Front Office Incompetence.

And worship of George Brett isn’t a problem. He was my Mom’s favorite player in the 80’s.

I still have his rookie card in a poly sleeve somewhere back home.

Kudos on choosing the Royals over the Cards living in Springfield. I live in Springfield and it’s just jammed full of Cards fans (especially with their AA affiliate now here). Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one :(

Its a pretty easy read and breaks down the complexities quite a bit...

If you read it, you really will look at the game differently (I have yet to finish it, I probably should have bought it earlier before doing a lot of the preliminary research on my own). Some of it is a little dated because it deals a lot with the Barry Bonds peak seasons, and it is a little lengthy, but it is still a really good read.

Welcome:

If you have the cash, I’d recommend buying a partial season ticket package. The K is a legitimate top-5 stadium in MLB. It’s a beautiful place to spend an evening, and if the Royals win, it’s a nice bonus. I live in New York, and I miss the K dearly.

Zack Greinke is the best pitcher in baseball. Watch him as often as possible. He makes hitters look bad. What I mean by this is that you’ll be watching him pitch and guys will take check swings at pitches that end up hitting the ground (“in the dirt”). Even very good hitters. They try not to swing but they can’t hold up until it’s too late. For new fans to baseball it’s sometimes not obvious why a guy starts to swing at a pitch that ends up in the dirt. It’s because the pitcher’s good.

The closer Joakim Soria is also supremely talented and in another market would be far more famous. Many of us here are frustrated that the team’s second best player only pitches 60-70 innings a year, and much of the anger at Trey Hillman (the manager) stems from his under-usage of Soria. The utilization of great relievers is also an ongoing debate in the larger baseball community.

Billy Butler (aka, the Baconator) is the best young hitter on the team. He plays 1B but is poor defensively and will likely end up as a DH. He’s likely heading into his prime years and is a strong candidate to break the Royals single-season HR-record (a league low 36 HR).

Alex Gordon is a post-hype sleeper candidate (“post-hype sleeper” is the term used for top prospects who initially fall short of their great expectations but who still have enough talent to become stars, albeit later than many people expected) at 3B who has been better than his reputation, but worse than those who projected him (before his first major league at bat) to be a hall-of-famer. He has great ability and is a popular break-out candidate here at Royals Review.

That about covers the stars and potential stars on the projected 25-man roster. There are some prospects in the minors that have exciting futures, but I’m sure you’ll pick up that info as you go.

Welcome to the crew. The discussions here rival any other baseball blog on the web. No matter if you’re looking for high-level sabermetrics talk or the lowest form of knee-jerk ass-hattery, you can find it. Enjoy.

by billexgordler on Apr 1, 2010 1:50 AM EDT reply actions

Thank you very much.

I’m excited to learn this year. And a partial season ticket package is something I’ve actually already thought about… assuming I can find a job and can actually afford it. My lovely wife (as she will always be referred to here on the off chance she reads anything I write) has been patient about the stupid amount of money I spend on Basketball… I think she’ll be okay with me transferring that balance onto the Royals.

Thanks also for the player info. The only aspect of baseball I’ve ever enjoyed is watching pitchers. A great pitcher to me is like watching a fantastic guard in basketball – they run the show, and when they’re on, it’s a great experience to watch them perform.

I’m sure I’ll be able to pick up the sabermetrics eventually… but as an actor, the knee-jerk ass-hattery comes naturally.

You can get a Royals ticket for like $8 I think...

Unfortunately parking is like $14. The food alone at the Stadium nearly makes up for it (also fairly expensive too).

Really, though

the overall ballpark experience is better, far cheaper, and more convenient than most every other city. Like many other aspects of KC, you get a lot of bang for your buck at Kauffman.

Oh yeah... I dropped 84 for a ticket to see a game at Fenway, and the food was more expensive...

I forgot how much I like KC, I was there last weekend for the first time in forever, and I was walking around in Westport, then hanging out in the P&L district, just really cool areas… I also like Legends and Zona Rosa.
