Apple juice or orange juice?

really neither

but apple juice is lame as hell

i’d probably rather go grape/cranberry etc

by Freneau on Mar 5, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

I Had 16

Ounces of apple juice this morning. I drink apple straight in the morning and grapefruit (Florida’s Natural) with vodka at night.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

On a Hotdog...

Mustard or Ketchup or both

Do Mayo or Hot sauce have a place on a condiment only dog? Or does the dog have to have fixin’s on it before you enter the strange condiment realm?

Ketchup……get the f**k away from my hot dog stand

I’ve thrown on some hot sauce before (like franks red hot stuff)

mustard and cheese is my choice

from today's BP

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10157

They addressed the problem, swapping Nicks—trainer Nick Swartz “retired” and they brought in Nick Kenney from the Indians’ excellent medical staff. Now, Kenney will need to focus on prevention, one of the strong suits of Cleveland’s approach. Like the Mets, the Royals seemed to be hardest hit in terms of losing their highest-value players, veterans like Gil Meche and Jose Guillen. The new medical staff will need to get in front of injuries, dealing with them early rather than the “deny and hope” strategy that failed them the last few campaigns, typified by what happened last year with Mike Aviles. However, this might not be Swartz’s issue—things weren’t nearly as bad before Trey Hillman came in, though saying that the state of affairs was “average” isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of the Swartz era. Injury management isn’t just the province of the medical staff. We’ll see early if the Royals have really changed, since keeping an extended Zack Greinke healthy while bringing back Gil Meche will be key to any hope of improvement.

Dayton Moore and Hillman were once thought of as progressive thinkers, smart guys with a balanced approach, yet the medical results went down further than the field results, which tells you just how bad things got here.

For me, it might actually be harder to write for a "neutral" site during hte season

no transactoins, not much to say beyond “small sample sizes”

I try not to write about the Royals too much, but it’s hard to resist dong a post on hot having Kendall at #2 is a way of testing the sabermetric maxim that “batting order doesn’t matter all that much.”

take a Royals post you want to do, say “look how crappy Kendall is as a #2 hitter”, and make it a post about MLB, such as “ranking teams’ hitters who bat in the most important batting order slot”.

Rock N' Roll killed jazz

love all the self-aggrandizing white baby boomer jerkoffs who talk about their fight against racism (which was actually over but the shouting by the time they started caring) while they decided to but into the Beatles, Rolling STones, and Bob Dylan en masse while Miles, Coltrane, Ornette, etc. were in their primes.

That’s actually probably my favorite period — right before he got on heavy drugs again. Live Evil is also awesome, as is the (sort of) recently re-leased “It’s about that time.” Anything with the Corea/Holland/DeJohnette rhythm section is goo (I know it was Michael Henderson on Live Evil, so don’t bother reminding me). I don't know how much harm a guy like Wynton really does...

…in a world that includes Kenny G.

You’re more likely to hear that crap than anything real to begin with… Wynton doesn’t have to tell anyone that Jazz is dead or boring when guys like Mr. G. are constantly out there proving it. And, unfortunately, to your average human being, that stuff is “jazz.”

by kcemigre on Mar 6, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Wynton's damage

is more within jazz itself, I’d say. That whole Lincoln Center institutionalization thing does (to me) more harm than good. And I say this as more of a classical-music guy, who can see what institutionalization does to a musical genre.

Murphy was an optimist.

by Crooow on Mar 6, 2010 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Everyone knows that Kenny G. is a joke

talk to working jazz musicians who don’t play pre-1964 revival stuff and ask if they think Wynton is good for jazz. He’s a great player, as a cultural arbiter… well, I think embalmer is the right word — yes it preserves it well, but it’s not alive.

Anyone who says Coltrane did “nothing” after Love Supreme is a problematic force. In Ken Burns’ Armstrong/Marsalis hagiography the one time they go out of their way to have a jazz musician “mocked” is when they drag Branford’s irrelevant face out to say that Cecil Taylor, arguably the creative force behind whatever might possibly be living in improvisation since the late-50s. That’s simply embarrassing and obvious.

It’s at least as worrying concerned about non-jazz fans hearing Kenny G. as jazz than actual jazz fans who think that Wynton and his ilk are at all on the level of Davies, Coltrane, Coleman, Taylor, Braxton, Mitchell, etc. Who is more confused, the non-jazz fans who don’t understand jazz, or the jazz fans who only think they do?
