Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Per Dutton: Fields and Meche to DL

I believe Dutton is breaking these tidbits, though I could be wrong. Fields and Meche both headed to the DL.

Final position player spot will be either Aviles or Betemit. Many dudes battling for final two pitching spots.

Meche would still be scheduled to start on April 11th

Which I believe has been the plan all along. I didn’t realize that Fields was injured though. I imagine it’s just a bit of roster management at this point. Fields isn’t exactly a key component after the spring he’s had.

I did not know he was injured either

I guess this could be a phantom injury…

by Freneau on Apr 1, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Fields

He gets to keep playing in extended spring training games and then the Royals can send him to AAA for 20 days on a rehab assignment before having to add him to the roster.

and he can mend the injury to his

hitting ability

Zapp Brannigan/Dayton Moore quote of the day: "Yes, comets! The icebergs of the sky. By jackknifing from one to the next at breakneck speed, we might just get some kinda gravity boost". and also "Kif old friend, I don't know which disgusts me more. Your cowardice or your stupidity! We'll simply set a new course for that empty region over there. Near that black-ish hole-ish thing."

you just never know. between this organization doing its thang and the injury bug, anything’s possible

So the chances of Meche's arm falling off mid-pitch must be pretty high this season, huh?

I’ve had nothing to do with the Royals since Greinke’s last start, so I’m ready to embrace the bitterness once again!

I'm starting to foresee a Sweeney scenario

always shuffling back and forth between a couple starts and the DL

especially since meche doesn’t want surgery

I don't get the fascination with Anthony Lerew

But whatever, not the biggest problem with this team.

I think Trey values facial hair. And Dayton values Brave blood. Together you get a big man crush.

If Aviles is healthy

I can’t see what there is to decide between him and Betimet. Aviles is a much superior player with upside.

Call me a cynic

But if they Keep Aviles with the big team, they have to play him. Nobody will tolerate Yuni playing while Aviles sits on the bench. And Dayton doesn’t want to look like an idiot benching the SS he has craved for years, and for whom he gave up a significant amount in talent and money.

With Betemit, he is so awful at SS that that issue doesn’t raise its head.

I would guess Lerew is on the team atleast until the 11th

when Meche comes off the DL. That way they can try and sneak him through waivers. The good news is that Mitch is on the 25 man roster

by Mr. Jones on Apr 1, 2010 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

first 2 years went about as well as could be hoped, year 3 was a little iffy, and now years 4-5 starting to look somewhat brutal

Why not put Meche on the DL?

You don’t need him until April 11. It allows him to stay in Arizona and keep working and it allows you to keep an extra pitcher on the roster for a week. Too much negativity in here 4 days before Opening Day!

by Mr. Jones on Apr 1, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Rupe and Thompson heading to Omaha

So I assume Lerew has made it, and one of Hughes or Parrish will be the LOOGY.

I would say all three made it

and one will be sent down when Gil comes back

by Mr. Jones on Apr 1, 2010 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

We like to quibble on minor issues,

and I’m gonna bring up a new one:

Since the plan is Meche on DL until a 5th starter is needed – why not start the year with 14 position players and 11 pitchers, instead of 13-12? You still have a 7 man bullpen available, and it would give Hillman an extra pinch hitter (for the first 5 games, anyway) to play with? After all, everyone agrees that if the team has a strength, it’s the starting pitching, and the biggest weakness is going to be run production – thus it should be OK to utilize more PHs than he normally would employ.

Mr Glass, this is a pro sports team, not a retail store - run it like one!

But Anderson is still on there

As are Gordon, Meche, and Fields. So…who knows what that means. Why does this have to be such a mystery?

by MinnesotaRoyal on Apr 2, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm still not entirely sure the Anderson thing wasn't an April Fool's joke.

But then why would have both him and Maier? I agree that something doesn’t seem right. Maybe they just haven’t figured out where to put Anderson yet and only two of Fields, Meche, Aviles, Gordon, and Callaspo are DL bound? Or, maybe there are still some trades in the works?
