Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

Site Announcement And Late Night Links on Gordon, Zambrano, Ronaldo, Etc.

First, I'm happy to announce that Jeff Zimmerman is joining Royals Review as a regular contributor. Jeff also writes frequently at Beyond the Boxscore and Fangraphs, and will be a great asset for this site. As you can see from his two wonderful posts earlier this week, he can approach the game from a multitude of angles as a writer. The Peanuts/Royals piece already ranks as one of the most popular entries in the history of RR. And if nothing else, he's given us some great photos from Spring Training. So please +1 or rec Jeff the next time you see him in a game thread or something.

Many many links after the jump:

Jeff seems to be a very good writer

He makes me think and he makes me laugh. It’s something I’ve gotten used to on this site, so he fits right in. Welcome Jeff!

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

and really?

The Zambrano to the bullpen thing is soooooo crazy!!! Just think if the Royals said “Zach is our best pitcher and we need bullpen depth, so Zach will be the 8th inning guy for now.” WTF!!!

Yes, I'm still alive. Sorry to disappoint you.

its really dumb

but after seeing the giants front that they were gonna do this with Zito, then never doing it, i guess we should wait and see

man the cubs are in trouble

old team, many horrific contracts, bad farm system

by Freneau on Apr 22, 2010 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

You would think so

If there were justice in the baseball world, the Cubs would be in for about six to seven years of retribution… but they won’t be. I don’t bet against baseball teams with huge revenue teams. You can create a farm system with cash. Once everyone but Soriano is off the books, you can do something small-market teams basically can’t: sign difference-makers with cash.

D-Lee & Lilly are free agents after this, to that’s something to worry about; I think the cubs probably will experience a couple years of decline. But I’d still bet they win more games over the next 5 years than your average team, and that’s with the first “assertion” that they might be worse-run than one of the worst organizations in baseball (I know you were probably kidding, but I’m running with it anyway).

if they had a decent front office

they would dominate that division almost every year, even with Pujols in STL, they should be contending, and once Pujols is resigned, STL won’t have much money left between him and Holliday

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs.

Zambrano is toast, I'm afraid

granted, the rest of their staff is underwhelming, but he is about done.

There must be some stud HS prospect in 2011 I'm not aware of

That’s the only way I can explain the moves of the Royals, Astros, Mets and Cubs.

What's so shocking about that?

Chances Mendoza is DFA'd tomorrow?

I’m at about 75% it will happen. Seriously, some bullpen changes have to happen before the home stand, right?

A fourth hitter would be nice too though I guess they don’t need one in the short-term.

i can only hope

i’d say wood or bullington though. my money’s more on bullington i guess

by AtTheWall on Apr 22, 2010 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope it's Wood or Bullington

It’ll really probably be Brad Thompson. He had a good start a few games back and is probably looking good to management right now. Of course, that’s only if they want to switch him from a starter, but I see no reason not to.

The notion that the Thunder could have been KC's

is absurd. The Sonics weren’t moved from Seattle because their ownership was looking to relocate (though it’s true that they wanted a new arena), they were moved to OKC because an OKC businessman bought the team specifically to bring it to OKC. If they weren’t in OKC, they’d almost certainly still be in Seattle.

Right,

but most likely the NBA would not have approved the move without OKC showing that they were a viable option which they did with the Hornets.

Yeah, but KC wouldn't have had it either

Mellinger’s article seems to be implying that if only the Sprint Center had been ready for basketball two years earlier, KC would likely have a basketball team right now.

Heck, if KC really wanted to use Katrina as an opportunity to show potential fan support for a relocated NBA team, the city fathers could have offered to house the Hornets in Kemper with the promise of the Sprint Center being finished soon.

Congrats Jeff!

Everett Teaford has got me even more optimistic about the minors pitching staff. He’s been great this year and, if he keeps improving and moving up, he could be a great set piece with Crow and Montgomery (and Melville if he keeps it together) to set alongside Greinke in a couple years.

That BleacherReport.com link

(the “girlfriends” one) led me to click another link on the site, a list the 15 greatest jumps in sports – and Joey Gathright was notably missing.

The one over a car

or the one over Kuroda?

Either one is deserving

But I think the Kuroda one has a little more “awesome” in it.

And also, Congrats Tuscon

If there’s one thing this site has lacked relative to its “competition,” it’s stat-analysis, and Jeff is one of the best in the Royals blogosphere.

by sumajestad on Apr 22, 2010 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Congrats Jeff

But if you keep getting more jobs you’re not going to have any time to watch any actual baseball games because you’ll be writing in your mother’s basement. :)

Keep it up!

Speaking of jobs

I saw a job listing for a Stats Analyst with the Arizona Diamondbacks the other day. If anyone that might be qualified is interested, I think I found it simply by searching “baseball jobs” on Google.

by JSouth on Apr 22, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I applied, that job looks sweet, no word yet.

I don’t have the required education, but fit the rest pretty good.

I fit some of the needs...

not that I am near the sabermatrician that some of the folks are, but I have zero experience with pretty much all the programs listed.

Thanks to Will for bringing me on.

I will be doing a little more, game and overflow thread and breaking news, as Will is wanting someextra time this summer.

I will probably be doing less at BtB and writing more here and Fangraphs (I am part of a big role out they have coming soon).

I might be going a little AWOL for a couple weeks as I finish signing on a house tomorrow, and have to get moving. The place is out in the country on a couple of acres and I need to find out my options for getting the internet out there.

Sadly I have looked into the dimensions for a whiffle ball field

Will fit great, I thought of doing it like Kaufman, but don’t really want to add water to it, and it is pretty plain after that. Guess it would be easy.

look forward to reading more of your fine work

I’m predicting that this will turn the season totally around. Pods and Yuni will stink at the plate, the pitching will improve, and we venture over .500!!!!!!!
