KENDALL ONE SHY OF MAJOR LEAGUE RECORD Jason Kendall has opened the season with a 14-game hitting streak. Kendall is the fifth player over the last 100 years to open a season with a hitting streak of at least 14 games as a catcher. Three players opened the season with a 15-game hitting streak as a catcher: Ted Simmons for St. Louis in 1974, Tony Pena for Boston in 1990 and Victor Martinez for Cleveland in 2006. The Red Sox Birdie Tebbetts had a 14-game hitting streak to start the 1950 season. http://espn.go.com/espn/elias
