This is something I've been watching for the last week+, so I though I'd write about it. Maybe, it'll help me feel better.
With last night's loss, the Royals are now 0-16 when they allow 6 or more runs. I don't expect that any team has a good record when allowing 6+ runs, but this seems a little ridiculous to me. In my opinion, allowing 6+ runs at the major league level means that you're getting your ass kicked in 2 phases of the game (pitching and defense). Out of 33 games, we've gotten our asses kicked about half the time. BTW, the Royals are only 4-3 when they manage to score 6 or more.
In these 16 games, the Royals have scored 66 (roughly 4.1 runs/game) but have allowed 131 (about 8.2 runs/game)! On the year, we've allowed 182 runs total - which means that over 70% of these runs have been scored in about half of the games. Walks aren't entirely to blame. Royal pitchers gave 82 free passes (5.1 per game) in these games - more than you'd like but only about half a walk higher than this year's average (4.5).
It's not all bad. Doing the math will tell you that the Royals are 11-6 when holding the other team to 5 or fewer runs. If you want to add another level of "ridiculous", 3 of those 6 losses are games that Zack Greinke started. So, in games NOT started by Zack AND we hold the opposition to 5 or fewer runs, we're 11-3!
By way of comparison - in these 17 games, the Royals scored 68 (4.0 runs/game) and allowed only 51 (3.0 runs/game)! Our offense has been fairly stable in the 0-16 games and the 11-6 games. More runs are always great, but that's not really the major problem. Obviously, it's those extra 80 runs allowed that's killing us.
It's just stupid, amazing, ridiculous, weird, and stupid (tip of the hat to DM) that we can be nearly awsome half of the time and the worst team in the history of whatever the other half.
Note: Just looked up the Indians, and they're 0-10 when they allow 6 or more runs. New rule: First team to score 6 wins!!! We just need the "Nearly Awesome" Royals to show up.
