Breaking: Royals Fire Trey Hillman, Hire Ned Yost
So much for a normal day... so much for a normal evening for me.
Who was it that predicted they'd hire Ned Yost? I know I read that somewhere on here a few days ago.
Ned Yost... well, alright. Don't fully see the point. I'm not sure why Dayton would want to remind people of Milwaukee, since their turnaround under Melvin defies his argument that you need ten years to build a winner. Yost is the same guy those same Brewers fired in the last two weeks of a pennant race, which I guess gives him a good ice-breaker when he chats with Jose Guillen.
Farewell Trey Hillman.

Dayton said he was interim for now, and then they'd reevaluate after the season.
I would think if he’s as bad as Trey they’d look elsewhere.
Yeah, but I'd have to think that if he produces similar results to Trey there are only 2 possible reasons for failure
- The manager
- The players picked by the GM
If there's someone better available this offseason
I’d like to think they would take a look. This is new territory, so who knows what Dayton will do?

I'm sorry, but this makes me really happy
for a couple of reasons. One, someone realizes there needs to be SOME goddamn accountability, somebody actually cares whether or not we win or lose, and the fact that they put Yost in as manager instead of Gibbons. Plus, the fact that Moore did this despite the fact that he obviously didn’t want to tells me that he’s willing to do the right thing (or, at least the Glasses are pissed enough to force a change).
I feel badly for Trey the person, but this is an extremely positive move for us (in the short-term, still don’t know if we have any idea what the fuck we’re doing overall).

the fans and their silly impatient expectations are still around to take the blame
I think Moore will just fold this into his strategy of suggesting that the plan all along was to wait 8-10 years for the kids he drafted to develop and cite Yost’s reputation as good with younger players. He can say they thought they could win in the interim with Hillman, but it did not happen, so they made a change to benefit what has been the long-term plan all along. Then, when the Royals inevitably play better under Yost (thanks regression to the mean!), Moore can cite the success under Yost as proof that things are getting better.
Oh, horsepucky.
There’s always Butler and Greinke. We have a pennant-contending team, but Butler can’t hit for power and Greinke can’t win ballgames. They’re our two biggest problems!
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
I disagree. It’s obvious from the way Dayton is talking about Trey even now, that this wasn’t his idea. That means it was Glass’s idea and that’s a great sign going forward. Plus I think GMs almost always get to hire a second manager (well Royals GMs anyway) so this speeds it up. The next time someone is held accountable it will be Moore.
good luck to trey
he’s an ok guy, good luck to yost. But it doesn’t matter who we hire, we’ll never compete.

any chance GMDM was waiting for Royals to win a game so Hillman could go out on top...
and didn’t expect another victory for a week or two? Then, when they won today and the opportunity presented itself, he decided he couldn’t afford to wait until the next win came along and brought down the hammer.

Dayton said that he told Trey prior to the game I'm pretty sure.
Unless I heard it wrong. But that Trey didn’t want to go out on a 7-game losing streak so he let him manage the game. Which if true is all together crazy. But who really knows.
Quite bizarre.
There’s this sense of relief that Zack finally gets a win, then they immediately interrupt the postgame show between Joel & Split to cut to the Dayton presser. Joel & Split seemed caught off guard and didn’t quite realize what was going on.

This comes from Glass
you can put that in the bank
Or Glass said to Moore, you make changes or I will
And by I will he meant it was Moore’s ass unless he found some scapegoats to blame the fact that it was Hillman who couldn’t get the most of his crappy players he brought in.
At least Wally Joyner's not on the team....
On the other hand,
Trey already knew. They came to that decision late last night. What were they supposed to do – pretend that conversation didn’t happen until it’s more convenient to announce?
WTF, self?
I think Moore said it was talked about last night and today

Wait, what?
So last night over Schlitz beer Moore tossed his Bible aside, called up Hillman and said “Hey, you’re my guy. Also, I may fire you tomorrow”?

at least
this should be the last bullet left to fire in Moore’s chamber.
He is finally really on the clock
Noted Brewers fan and amusing BTF poster Harvey Wallbanger on Yost today
Ned does create a good atmosphere for young players that is conducive to them getting their sea legs and being established in the major leagues. He’s a positive guy.
The negatives are as follows:
—he does not recognize talent. He has to be told who to play or you will have the hustle and show guys up and down the lineup
—He cannot discipline veteran players. Young guys will listen to him but older guys with an attitude give Ned fits and having them on his team will cause his authority to be undermined. The GM has to make sure that the vets are ‘good soldiers’
—Ned couldn’t manage a bullpen to save his life. He will burn out arms faster than Leyland goes through a carton of Camels. It’s incredible.
I will state that Alex Gordon probably has the best bet to get his career back on-line with Ned as manager IF the GM tells Ned to play him. Ned will put him in the lineup and tell everyone within hearing range that Alex is a hard-workig young man who just needs a chance so everyone get out there and give Alex a lot of support and let’s hold hands and go “Yoo-hoo” together. Yayyyyyyyy, TEAM!!

I need a band of conspirators
to join me in a plan to assassinate Yost-Toastie when he trots Zack out for a 200 pitch count game and blows his arm out. I’ll take the grassy knoll position, I can hit a moving target with a .308.
Nothing to worry about though, Zack’s arm is unblowable.

That doesn't sound too bad
Play the young guys and let them establish themselves. If Yost actually does rescue Gordon’s career, that’s justification in itself for hiring him.
A positive attitude is much better than an unstable attitude like Trey’s.
I bet he can recognize talent well enough to see that Avilés is better than Yuni and that Mitch is better than Ankiel.
The Royals don’t have any veteran troublemakers except Guillén, right? And Hosay won’t be around very much longer. I’ve read (Mellinger?) that Kendall, though a lousy player, has become the clubhouse leader, and that he’s a team-first guy. So that shouldn’t be a problem here.
No one could handle a bullpen worse than Trey, so no matter how bad Yost is, there’s an improvement.

I think about it like this:
Say you work at a place where you are miserable and hate the job and it’s starting to show in your performance. When you don’t have to go to that place anymore, by getting a new job or getting fired, it’s a short-term frustration. But you know in the long run that you’ll be better off. You don’t have to deal with the storm of bullcrap.
At a place I once worked, every time someone got out of there, we were all jealous and wished the person the best, because they didn’t have to be in the shithole of a job anymore.

When I got laid off
from “large unnamed internet media corporation” in 2007, an impromptu beerfest got held at a big beerhall-type place near the office campus.
Now, prior to this layoff, every other layoff in the past had been used to get rid of deadwood, people who were voluntarily leaving, or people who were “hard to work with” (i.e., “assholes”). This time, though, over 2,000 people got let go and all the decisions were made at President level, and it was essentially random (so random, in fact, that about 100 people had to be rehired over the next three weeks just to keep the company running).
Damn near everyone who got laid off was in high spirits, having fun, and networking their asses off. The folks who didn’t? Most of them were disconsolate. A lot of them were crying. Part of that was being worried over friends who got let go, sure… but most of it was “damnit, I’m still stuck here and now my job’s going to suck even MORE.”
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.

What I am most interested in now...
…is how Yost puts together the lineup. If Kendall continues his bid to catch 220 games this season and Betancourt continues to start at SS after dropping pop-ups then it will tell us exactly who is making the day-to-day decisions with this team. Um, well the last guy, Bush, was about as bad as you could ever ever get.
So replacing him with a shower curtain would have been an upgrade.
Stupidly
I am for no good reason watching SportsCenter. While the firing of Hillman is on the bottom-of-screen crawl, it hasn’t made it to the actual broadcast yet. And baseball has been covered (at least a few games), so it isn’t that (even though they’re mostly verbally drooling over some NBA playoff game tonight).

Dayton sounded very remorseful for having to fire Trey over things that were ultimately his (Dayton’s) own fault.

What I want to know is
whether Hillman, in spite of being sacked after 35 games, still has a chance to lead both leagues in ordering his team to make their first out of the game via the sacrifice bunt.
Hopefully Ned Yost doesn't surpass him.

30 teams combined have 18 sacrifice bunts in the first inning
and KC has 4 of them.
And that’s my contribution to the elegy now in progress. Farewell, Trey. You’ll always have Sapporo.
One of Yost's positives
is that he’s not a big fan of the sacrifice. He was always near the bottom of the list in the NL.
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.

Is Yost the first KC manager in a decade to have ML experience?
My hope is that Yost will learn from his Milwaukee experience and work with his strengths. Sounds like he can develop young talent. Handling the bullpen takes experience so I hope he has learned from his failures there too.
I’ll be interested to see if Yost plays the veteran like Trey did or goes with the younger guys. How long will Gordon stay in Omaha learning to play LF?
Will this be the first step of an overhaul (which would be an indictment of GMDM’s ability) or a band aid move to right the course?
The season is still young – not even a 1/4 yet but I’m pleased Trey is gone. Too many goofy moves – bunting early, bullpen management, lack of ability to inspire players, staying with Meche too long TWICE, and a general lack of credibility.
Would you rehire Trey to manage a minor league team if you were the GM of an organization?
Bell had prior experience
with the Tigers and Rockies. Your call as to whether that qualifies as ML or not.
Buddy Bell
and Bob Schaefer, interim manager in 2005, had interim manager experience in 1991 as well.
Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!
Listening to both pressers
It’s amazing how one can make the right decision for the wrong reasons.
GMDM said, “it was really the 2nd half of last season and the beginning of this season that told me we needed to ‘move forward.’” Of course, rational Royals fans will acknowledge that it was precisely those time periods when Royals “talent” regressed to the mean. More simply, they played exactly as their statistics predicted they would.
Any one of us could pretend that he was just being nice, but it’s hard not to believe these are his actual feelings on the topic. He believes that this team would have been better under different leadership. Read that again. Dayton Moore believes the end of last season and the beginning of this one are a result of poor leadership—not poor decisions based on poor philosophy. Now, I’ll give him five or ten wins if he had a manager that knew not to give away outs in the first 7 innings by bunting, but let’s get serious. This team is playing only a game or two behind where they SHOULD be playing. They actually are this bad, folks.
Worse, Trey believed he failed not because of a horrendously flawed strategic baseball philosophy, but because he wasn’t able to “press the right buttons.” As if pressing the right buttons would make Billy a better at defense, or Guillen more disciplined, or Yuni the ability to do…anything, or bad middle relievers into average ones. You see? He blames himself because he couldn’t MOTIVATE them to get better! Doesn’t that punch you in the stomach like seeing your high school crush getting fat? “What was I thinking? Man, I’m lucky I didn’t get stuck with that!”
In essence, Dayton Moore firing Trey Hillman is like throwing away an overheating microwave because the clock isn’t working. We can celebrate that the correct decision was made, but we should be very, very wary that it was made for the absolute worst reasons.

Here's two questions that deserve their own thread:
1. Is it possible that Dayton Moore was made into a worse General Manager by basing his decisions off of Trey Hillman’s flawed strategy? I’m thinking of a similar relationship that Carl Peterson reportedly had with his coaches. Is that remotely possible?
2. In the same vein, is it possible that the right manager could steer GMDM the right direction? I’m thinking of sneaking in a young Ra-Ra guy that just happens to understand sabermetrics and explains them to Dayton over a few seasons in private.
I’m obviously speculating based on a fantasy world, where our General Manager was able to learn from mistakes instead of making the same bad ones over, and over, and over, and over again. But what if this was possible?

No it's not possible
Moore has proven to be one of the stupidest human beings on the planet. Can you name a better GM of anything? Ever?
I’d rather have Jeff Skilling. Atleast he has a strength.
by GobbleforCyoung on May 13, 2010 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions
He could if he has the stones
but I don’t think that Yost has ‘em. He can look at the roster and say, "Well, Betancourt joins Bloomers on the bench, Aviles is the SS, and Guillen’s starting less against RH pitching to see if Kila actually can contribute to this team, and on occasion Pods and Kendall are going to sit, and, Ankiel is definitely playing RF when he gets back, and even then it won’t be everyday." Essentially, he has to tell Dayton he won’t use crappy players even if Dayton prefers them. If he did, he may have the chance to have some influence.
You can tell that I’m a big fan of fiction.

Even If He
Had done what nearly all of us advocated, he would have been out the door unless we were immediately in contention. If you defy your boss’s will, you’d better exceed his expectations by a good margin. Moore probably thought his putrid pile of parrot droppings he had assembled was at least a .500 team. Even doing the best possible things with this roster wouldn’t get you to .500 without a lot of luck.

Yost should be so lucky.
I Should Be
More careful with pronouns. It makes sense in my head, but I’m the only one there (most of the time). I meant Hillman could not have defied Moore by doing what we wanted him to do without being fired anyway unless the team really took off. They’d be better, but hardly contenders. Yost might be able to get away with it, if he wants to. I’ll be interested to see today’s lineup.

I went to the game today with a friend. Sitting first base side, dugout box seats (behind the Royals dugout). I had made a “Fire Trey” sign to hold up when he walked back to the dugout from the pitching mound after making a move to the bullpen. Stadium people wouldn’t let me bring it in.

This is great news. The Royals were what 1-9!
Hillman’s lineups suck. Willie Blommquist must give the best BJ"s because he should never play. Podsednick is fine, Dejesus, Callaspo are fine. Guillen should be playing RF so Kila can play first and Billy can DH. Aviles should start every day and lets see what Getz can do. Maier is the 4th outfileder and spells Guillen late in games for defensive purposes.

As for the pitchers
Meche and Hochevar have to figure their shit out and start pitching well. No more excuses you need to step up and just be better. Bannister and Davies are what they are and nothing more than back end rotation guys.
The bullpen can actually be decent of Farnswroth Hughes and Tejeda continue to pitch decently. They need another arm though

letter to the editor, September 2008
Brewers need to do the little things As things get autumnal, playoff teams suddenly recall the bunt. Yes, a bunt takes the bat out of a slugger’s hands; however, free swingers like Mike Cameron and Bill Hall could do worse than moving a runner one spot closer to scoring.
Manager Ned Yost must extinguish the candle in his shrine to Earl Weaver: If Rickie Weeks walks to start the game, he should steal second. J.J. Hardy should bunt him to third. Ryan Braun could hit a pop fly or a well-placed grounder. The Brewers would have a run on the board, two out and Prince Fielder at the plate. Repeat as necessary to generate similar results.
The Brewers aren’t good at bunting . The bunt, like consultative selling, is an informed way to make things happen. If employees are not great at consultative selling, do companies take it out of their sales arsenal? Will they rely solely upon the cold-call?
As a company, the Brewers need to stop relying on the cold-call that is the home run. This would be less a philosophical change and more a necessary adaptation for a team in need. The Brewers need to bunt in order to manufacture the runs necessary to produce a playoff spot.
so the Brewers aren’t good at bunting, so they should bunt more often?
bunting cultists are weird.
but less bunting is better
I went to the Plaza and said "this is where the parade will be held when Dayton Moore gets fired"
You notice how the letter-writer
thinks of it as a decision between “bunting” or “hitting a home run”?
