Hillman had the respect of the team?  Really?

I was wondering if fans in the KC could illuminate something for me. A lot of the press I read yesterday about Hillman getting shit-canned said he was well respected by a team that just couldn't win. I don't live in KC anymore so I may be way off base here. But I sensed and I think read about a completely different situation. It seemed to me that the team did not respect Hillman and he lost the team in his first season as manager. I remember reading about a team meeting in which Moore told the team to deal with Hillman because Hillman wouldn't be getting fired. Am I misremembering things? There seems to me to be a huge disconnect between this portrayal of Hillman as a manger beloved by his players and the reality of the situation.
