Off baseball topic #2
i really like the idea of doing a non-related topic each day. it breaks the monotony of baseball talk and allows a personal touch to the message boards. so here is the topic that i propose for the day 2 of this new trend.
BEER: favorite style, individual beer, etc
my favorite beers are the schlafly dry-hopped APA and the bear republic racer 5 and obviously my favorite style is a very hoppy APA or IPA

Sounds Great!
But it would be better as a “fan shot” than a “fan post.” The unwritten rule of Fan Posts is “if it took you 20 minutes (or less) to write your fan post then you probably shouldn’t post it.” Shorter blurbs and tidbits, etc. should be posted under the shots.
Not trying to bitch, but I’d personally rather not see RR turn into AP as far as a bunch of meaningless posts eating up the fanpost space.
With that said…I’m not much of a beer drinker. More of a Bourbon/Whiskey/Whisky/Herb guy, but when I drink beer…I prefer Boulavard Wheat.

No shit.
Am I the only one that hates when this site is referred to as a “message board”?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
I know
silly me for expecting a fanpost or the area where fanposts are to contain baseball stuff.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
and really, this isn't directed at jeremy46
but out of the fanposts now visible on the front page, how many contain more than one simple thought/paragraph?
That’s just getting old to me. I know I can go elsewhere but there’s normally a ton of great stuff posted here, it’s just crowded with this stuff the last couple of weeks.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
Do you understand how the fanpost section is getting cluttered with this stuff though?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
i guess i see your point. but the object is to make this popular. this site os booming right now whether it is baseball related or not. and like i said i have tons of posts on here baseball related and i like the idea of changing it up a bit. you do to, dont lie.
The comments are interesting, I'm not saying anything about that.
you do to, dont lie
The post isn’t though…I like reading a fanpost that has some thought into it. Even if it is telling me to stick my head in the sand and ignore reality.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
how is the post not conversation and thought provoking. i stated the topic and my personal thoughts. that is what all these posts are.
That's your fanpost.

i stated that i was going to start a non baseball topic each day and that the day 2 topic was BEER and i listed my favs. no big deal!
And if someone else wants to throw up an OT post,
there’s now two showing plus the previous days.
Isn’t that what fanshots are for?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
in theory yes
but sometimes if I don’t front page them, they don’t seem to generate as many comments…
That's the point though, isn't it?
I’ve always posted OT stuff in the fanshots, because I think it’s rude to push down well thought out posts. The OTs are usually just little, quick blurbs that are supposed to promote discussion…but they are rarely well thought out and rarely are more than a paragraph. Why should they push down more deserving articles?
"I DARE you to make less sense."
They don't last very long in the Fanshots...
but I think having these pointless, quick blurbs in the Fanposts is going to set a dangerous precedent.
We all know that things in the Fanshots don’t last long, so now that we know that we can use a Fanpost to “keep the discussion going,” I think we might see more people moving there for quick thoughts. Then, these Fanshots will start disappearing quickly, too. That would be a shame.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
nothing is going to disappear…it is here to stay. there are plenty of baseball related fanshots. beer is indirectly related to baseball so i thought i would post it. like it or not
It isn't really this particular article...
and yes, they do disappear. Once they are off the main page, they rarely get any more comments. That means that actual, worthwhile and complete posts get buried for one-liners.
If you feel the need to post this, just put it in a Fanshot. If you want to do a Fanpost, write something more cohesive. Hell, I don’t care if a Fanpost is OT, but at least put some content in it.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
i just dont understand how this doesnt have content? really tell me. it is all good info and a way to learn about one another!
I think a good rule of thumb is this...
is your intent to inform others of your opinion or thought process or is your intent to provoke conversation so that others are informing you of their opinion?
If the majority of the information is from others, perhaps a Fanshot would be a better alternative?
I’m not intending to say that your post is bad or anything, just that your main point seems to be a question without any attempt at an answer. It is quite short and with little content other than a question and then a very sparse list of your favorite beers.
Perhaps, if you had told us some interesting facts about your favorites (where they come from, where we can get them, etc), it would have made a better Fanshot.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Here is a great example of an OT Fanshot
http://www.royalsreview.com/2009/7/15/949223/royals-radio-affiliate-profile
"I DARE you to make less sense."
i have been listing where the beers are from and giving great info on places, experiences, etc. get with it
Not in the article, you didn't...
if you’re gonna make it a Fanpost, perhaps that’s where that information belongs. If you aren’t going to put any work into the article proper, it should be a Fanshot.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
So far...
Warden, Juancho, and myself. Based on prior discussion on this site, there are many more who haven’t said anything yet. Many of us, myself included, probably wouldn’t have said anything if not for Warden opening the floodgates.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Yeah, I'm in that boat, too.

but if the person just posted stuff like this it would be an issue, i dont so it doesnt matter. this is a thought provoking post, seriously. if there isnt a non-baseball topic everyday im fine with that, i just thought i would throw this out there.
The OT part of it isn't my problem..
that’s Warden’s problem. Post OT stuff all you want, but try to categorize it better for the benefit of everyone on here. If you make a complete article, then put it here. If you make a short blurb, put it in Fanshots.
I have absolutely no problem with this thread at all; it just doesn’t belong here.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
i listed the topic, and my thoughts in the first post. there have been relevant discussions in the posts since. what more do you want?
How about a full post or
put it in a Fanshot since that is what it is.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
That's the requirement for both...
as handed down to the people who designed the template. It isn’t the intention, though.
Honestly, I think if you had made the same post with some of your comments included into the actual post, then I wouldn’t have said anything.
FP/FS can both be thought provoking, but the FP is supposed to be a little less open ended and a little more of your thoughts.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Well, I think we've managed to get into a circle...
so, I think we can stop for now. I’m interested in hearing what people think about it though. I might make a poll to see what the consensus is in the present climate.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
No, my problem's the same as yours.
One paragraph fanposts or a made up fucking bracket being posted 8 different times.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
Although I have to admit
that it bothers me that the “recommended fanpost” window is limited to five items.
Usually, that’s enough; I mean, my post on Ned Yost’s pre-Royals career hung around up there until just a couple of days ago, and that was sufficient time for it to ferment.
The real problem, to me, is that if the FanPosts start getting cluttered with crap, the real FanPosts will fall off the first page before they can generate enough Recs to get that second “life” in the Recommended section (unless, of course, you front page them).
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
Crap, I jumped over a point
Insert this after my second paragraph:
“But if we have a particularly strong few days in terms of reader contributions, there’s not enough room in the recommended fanpost section to hold them all.”
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
look…i just like the chit chat while im at work. this has served its purpose. it is actually really popular also
I don't like being censorious
However, my personal RR policy is to post only on baseball stuff, almost always Royals-related. Two exceptions: 1) I occasionally put up an OT post on FC Barcelona, which four or five people here are interested in, and 2) if something shows up in the comments that I have a unique perspective on, I say something. (Example: Someone posted a picture of the Colosseum in Rome. I’ve been there so I told a little story of what happened to me.)
I don’t see anything wrong with an occasional OT post, since I do it myself. An OT post every day might be excessive, though. Maybe you should pick a theme (mine’s Barça) and stick to that specific subject on OT posts, about once a week or so.
POD WILL EXPLOD!!!!1!!
And maybe let content decide where to put it...
I feel that the majority of OT should be Fanshots. Since, those are intended for quick, short blurbs.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I don't think popularity has anything to do with the point.
Reality TV and Producer-created pop bands are popular, too…but that doesn’t mean they belong on the Discovery channel.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
actually that's all the discovery channel is these days...
Reality TV
The Kansas City Royals; Successfully failing since 1986
I think this actually proves my point...
the popularity of the article is due to the comments, not to the post itself. So, perhaps it doesn’t belong here.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
According to the definitions of the different types of post,
it doesn’t.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Your "post" is a little like...
Jose Guillen: interesting and discussion proving, but it isn’t very good. It has a quick hack approach and hopes that others will fill in its inadequacies.
Also, your post is blocking Kila (a superior post)
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Yo, bro.
Don’t tell me what to do.
POD WILL EXPLOD!!!!1!!
It isn't though.
It’s an interesting discussion, but there isn’t any content to the post.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Ding ding ding ding
“No content”
This is the criteria on which to judge FanPosts. If you have no content, then it’s a FanShot.

But this could be an off topic post for another week. I always enjoy the articles and blogs on peoples stadium visits and thoughts.

Stouts
Guinness is probably my favorite, haven’t run into an Irish Stout (Beamish, Murphy’s) I didn’t like.
I also like pale ales and Belgian ales. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Delirium Tremens, and New Belgium Trippel Ale are faves in that area.
My wife loves Young's Double Chocolate Stout.
I like most stouts, but it’s almost too chocolaty for me.
Don't Stop Believing!
Wish I knew more about beer than I do
I like pale ales – Boulevard Pale Ale being one of my faves. Love the Ad Astra Ale at Free State Brewery.
Carlsberg, Stella Artois, Bass are some of my other faves.
Miller Lite if I don’t care what it tastes like.

im not much of a stout drinker. i dont much care for the boulevard pale ale. i prefer the single wide IPA that boulevard puts out.
any one been down to the Flying Saucer in the P&L?
Prefers the IPA
That is interesting, I like the flagship Pale Ale and the IPA, but the IPA is almost too dry to finish sometimes.
Yes
The Flying Saucer is my venue of choice before and after anything going on at the Sprint Center.
I saw that
There was much rejoicing.

Beer
Tailgate – Mich Gold Light
Golf – Budweiser
Gambling – Coors Light
At bar, I would look for it in this order, usually:
1. Boulevard (In MN on tap half the time, but usually just wheat and you have to be specific not to get a damn orange in it)
2. Newcastle
3. Leini Sunset Wheat
4. Guiness
5. Anchor Steam
Leine Sunset Wheat
I like it. Came in the summer sampler case at Sam’s Club. Definitely has a more complex taste than the typical wheat.
i have heard
people think it tastes like fruity pebbles, ha ha. it is great though, always a good choice anytime of year.
it does have a multi fruity flavor. my favorite whear though is the hitachino wit. great beer and it comes in an awesome bottle.
No, it seriously tastes like the Post breakfast cereal Fruity Pebbles
and it’s too sweet for my tastes
Just opened a bottle
And now it completely tastes like Fruity Pebbles or even Froot Loops to me. Ruined.

Just had some Grain Belt this weekend up in MN
that was solid
So was a beer called Surly…….after two I couldn’t feel my face.

surly
That is some good stuff. never would guess it coming out of a can.
I always see Grain Belt, hear its good, but they need a new name. Nothing about grain belt sounds appealing.
Yeah, I loved the whole; Beer you should drink in a glass from a can thing
I really liked the fact it should the Bitter Units too….boy howdy that shit was bitter. Like a double IPA or something.
Grain Belt was great! Sure the name could be something different, but then again.

Favorite style is probably wheat beer or a nice dark porter
For individual beers my top 5 would probably be:
Leinie’s Sunset Wheat
Empyryan Ales Vanilla Porter
Boulevard Wheat
New Belgium Mothership Wit
Pete’s Wicked Strawberry Blond (have not had this since college, forgot all about it unitl one day it popped in head head a few months ago, but now I cannot find it anywhere in Lincoln)
Also like Leinie’s old fall beer Apple spice beer, but that was discontinued for Fireside Nut Brown which is also very tasty.

Can't stand beer at all
Never cared for it. Went for a Budweiser brewery tour on vacation last October, and decided I should be game and try a variety of beers in the tasting room…they all sucked, to me. Just one of those tastes I don’t have, I guess.

I went to the one in New Hampshire. But I imagine they’re pretty similar tours in all locations.
The high point to me was that while overlooking the bottling room, I got to ask the tour guide, “What if one of the bottles should happen to fall?”

Unfortunately, the tour guide was clueless, and only one or two others in our tour group, other than my immediate family, seemed to react to my zinger at all. Guess that’s why I keep a day job, I’m not all that close to becoming the next Steve Martin.

I support your efforts to quit drinking soda.
I was a lifelong soda drinker/fast food consumer until I watched Super Size Me. That, combined with losing my car for a month, made me quit cold turkey.
I’ve backed off that a little since then — I have maybe a soda every one or two weeks — but for the most part, I drink iced tea or fruit juice. One of the biggest benefits I’ve seen is that I can taste nuances in other drink (like coffee or beer) and food a lot better than I used to.
I'm obviously biased
But I have big mountains of verified medical research on my desk de-bunking a lot of the negative myths about soda. The only legit claim is this – calories in, calories out. If you like soda, but want to lose wait, I suggest switching to diet or zero.
Fruit juice is good for vitamins, but is very high in calories, so isn’t a good alternative if you are looking to cut weight. And sweet iced tea is far more caloric that soda.
I once had hope...now I have Moore.
I should also add
that, for me, the cost of buying bulk iced tea and making it myself is drastically lower than buying two-liters of soda at the grocery store, too.
It definitely is.
I drink my iced tea with artificial sweeteners (saccharine if I can find it). I’ve never taken to drinking diet soda largely because I just don’t care for the aftertaste of other artificial sweeteners, and there seems to be a lot of grey-area research into the negative effects of them. I rationalize using saccharine because it’s been in use for so long.
The main reason that I switched off is the gigantic mounds of sugar in soda, and that I could not drink it in moderate amounts. It’s pretty much an on/off thing for me.

Not That Picky
I drank Bud Light for years. When I started dating again, the first woman I went out with was a beer drinker, and from Germany, too, so I started drinking Alaskan Pale Ale. It’s real beer. I continued to do so out of inertia long after we stopped dating, more from inertia than anything. I still drink Bud Light at the ballpark; we don’t have many choices there.
One I really like and will buy on occasion (it’s not always available) is Negra Modelo. The Mexican clam diggers that come up here to work every summer prefer it over anything else, and the local liquor stores stock it for them.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
home brew
anyone here ever brew at home? i have brewed 7 batches so far and it gets better each time, but still not great-drinkable but not great
I don't
But my sister and brother-in-law have a sweet brewing setup at their place. I think they’ve made 15-20 beers over the last couple years, and, while the first ones were a little rough, they’ve really become pretty solid. Starting to wonder when they’ll ramp up their equipment and make more than a couple kegs at a time.

I've tried a couple with a buddy of mine
he has all the stuff, and I through ideas his way then = magic
Right now he has a cross between a brown ale (think Moose Drool ) and an IPA, I think he is calling it an English IPA. It is great, and only about a week old, and four days post CO2.
I really don’t know enough, but would like to get into it on my own.

It's Not As
Widely available as the other Alaskan types. The Amber is everywhere.

I don't drink beer
unless it’s mixed with tomato juice or bloody mary mix. typically my drink of choice is vodka/soda with lemon and lime. basically the most direct, least-caloric method to enjoying alcohol. i’ll throw in bloody mary’s for ku football pre-game

This explains it all
“basically the most direct, least-caloric method to enjoying alcohol…”
“… for ku football pre-game”
You are making it too easy.
Let me think about this
Favorite beer;
Moose Drool- Big Sky Brewing- this is ridiculously awesome
Deshutes Stout- Deshutes Brewery
Alaskan Pale Ale
Boulevard Pale Ale -the wheat is weak
Mack And Jacks – Seattle (IPA-ish) awesome
Hales Cream Stout- Fremont, Seattle
Hales Double India IPA – will blow your mind

Lots of favorites....
Of course, Boulevard Pale Ale is near the top of the list (and I actually like their Wheat as well, but not as much as I like the Pale Ale. As Pale Ales go, Sierra Nevada is another really good one).
Having done my undergrad work in Portland, OR (most microbrews per capita in the US), there are a lot of good Oregon beers I like—Drop Top Ale, McTarnahan’s, and McMenamin’s Rubinator (which is 1/2 Ruby Red Ale and 1/2 Terminator Stout. They also make chocolate milkshakes with the Terminator, and they are ridiculously amazing).
Newcastle or Shiner Bock if I need a beer that can go with just about anything. I also cook with Newcastle sometimes.
Kona (a Hawaii brewery) makes an awesome coffee-flavored porter called Pipeline.
I went through a Smithwick’s phase fairly recently. Still a big fan.
Pabst Blue Ribbon if I don’t care what the beer tastes like, or if it is free.
And Often Drunk
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

My national favorites are:
Blue Moon (and seasonal ales), Sam Adams, and New Belgium Brewing Company (although I don’t care for Fat Tire as much as 1554).
As far as imports go, I’ve had Paulaner Hefeweizen and that was pretty awesome stuff.
You seem to like wheat beers.
If you can find a Maine brew called Allagash White you should give it a shot. Fan-freaking-tastic.
Thank you, Walter Jones.
Online Grocery for Beer
Go here, see if they have it.
Cool, will do.
I’m still learning the beer lingo — I only started exploring in October of last year. I’ve found that I generally like much darker and less filtered (or unfiltered) beer.
i had a shlafly dry hopped APA in a cask a few weeks ago at the parkville brewfest. it is was great, unfiltered hoppy and very natural.
i had a shlafly quadrupel last night
it tasted like soy sauce.
