OT: What defines a Fanpost?
There has been some interesting discussion (again) about what should be required to make a Fanpost in the discussion of a different article found here. I thought it would be interesting to get other people's thoughts on the matter. My argument can be found in the discussion in the link provided as can the opposing argument.
Yes, I am extremely aware of the irony of making a FanPost about what content is necessary to make a FanPost. I tried to make a FanShot, but I didn't see an option to make a poll in there. That probably hurts my argument a little bit, but perhaps not.

As I said before, I don't mind an occasional off-topic fan post
A fan post should be more substantial than a fanshot, which is designed for quick hitting ideas/links, etc.
I agree 100%, but I don't think...
that the Fanposts in question have been substantial.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I kind of wish there was an in-between
I think Fanposts should be in-depth column-style works that have been well-researched and remain on the side bar for awhile as “highlighted pieces”.
I think Fanshots should just be links to other articles and columns around the interwebs.
But then there should be some sort of forum where people can just ask random question, discuss random topics, that aren’t as fleshed out as Fanposts.

Kinda
Except I think you could have threads divided out and sorted like on a message board.
But if that brings along the elements you see on a message board, then no thanks.

That'd be nice...
but don’t Fanshots already serve that purpose anyway. I’ve always used them for random questions, at least.
I always go to a Fanpost if I want to read something. I got to a Fanshot to discuss something. Maybe that’s just me, but that’s how I always approached it.
When I go to Cici’s pizza buffet, I’ll look at the Fanshots on my phone while I’m eating. I can’t really type on my phone and it takes a while for things to load sometimes. It’s disappointing to open up a Fanshot to read and see it’s only three sentences long.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
we actually have it pretty good
the fanshots section here is really active, on a lot of sites its dead
No doubt.
I love, love, love this site which is why I’ve been coming back for 4 years. My problem is that it is actually too active sometimes and I lose conversations and whatnot (and the search function is a bit lacking when searching for “new” comments). I don’t mind losing Fanshot conversations, but the Fanposts ones make me sad.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I have tried to get a recent commented top 10 in case an article is still being discussed after it is off the main page.
Kinda like the Book Blog, but SBN wants nothing to do with it.

I like Fanposts to be a little bit of writing
but not necessarily on topic (check out Jeffs awesome Fanpost on his potential Wiffle Ball Stadium, also Beer post)
Though “topic” is a relatively loose term as well considering the cros section of the people that read and post at RR.( YEAH, I know this is a baseball blog, but don’t tell me you don’t like it when Will posts a poem……that keeps me coming back no mater what happens )
I like OT stuff from time to time. The only problem is if you post something that is bordering Fanshot/Fanpost and you default by placing it in Fanshots it gets buried down the page in Fanshot purgatory.
A-Team vs Airwolf-this shit keeps me up at night!
So I really don’t care as long as this doesn’t turn into AP, and from this post and the discussion generated in the OT-Beer thread I doubt highly RR will ever spiral outta control like that.
Therefore, if I don’t like a Fanpost due to some arbitrary structural problem, I don’t rec it. It will get pushed down a bit faster, and no one will be the wiser. It wont be placed in Recommended Fanposts and it wont push down a truly epic Fanpost.
However if something really is wrong Will, or Jeff can do their mod. magic.
I really haven’t been bothered by any kind of posting or people on RR, which for how often I visit/read/comment that is a surprising thing.
In summation; Baseball is what brings me here, the analysis and knowledge from numerous people allows me to learn stuff I didn’t know existed, the OTs/Openthreads keep me here.

Agree
I really have nothing to complain about how things are moderated/structured now to be honest. If a Fanshot has little substance, it probably won’t generate much conversation and won’t be on the sidebar in a day or two. It is amazing how much content is provided by users (browse around other MLB SB Nation sites and you’ll be surprised at how little activity there is)

Arrowhead Pride
There’s lots of good stuff on that site, but the sheer weight and volume of the crap that gets posted really overwhelms it. It’s just too much info to sort through before you can find the quality posts. Bloody Elbow is like that a lot, too.
The size, community, and quality of posts on RR are a big part of what drew me to the site, and what keeps me coming back. I agree that all reasonable measures should be taken to assure that RR does not become AP.

“I like OT stuff from time to time. The only problem is if you post something that is bordering Fanshot/Fanpost and you default by placing it in Fanshots it gets buried down the page in Fanshot purgatory.”
This seems like an argument in my favor. If things are getting buried as Fanshots and then everyone uses your logic and makes it a Fanpost…what do you think will happen then?
Fanshots go faster because they are quick little blurbs…Fanposts go slower because they have content and take time to create. If we start having Fanposts that are nothing more than 2 sentences that took 12 seconds to think of…I think we are doing a disservice to those who are composing something with some thought.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
That's how I feel.
Meaningless tidbits, or quick questions or WHO DA RIVALZ? should be left in fanshots, things that take a modest amount of effort to put togeter should be fanposts. I really don’t think a fanpost should be anywere close to 75 words…if it is…then it should be some mind blowing shit.

I will point out; however, that as far as I know, you can’t do a poll in a Fanshot. Though, maybe someone else knows a way to do that. Either way, perhaps we don’t need 15 threads about rivals anyway? We could do the whole thing in one or two perhaps?

I think it's better if we, as a community, show the mods our preferences...
and then maybe come up with something as a collective. I’m sure they have enough to do.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
On the other hand
I have to wonder how much discretion Will/Jeff would really have. How posts are organized, and word limits, whether you can make polls, etc. would seem to be determined in large part by SBNation’s programmers.

You're totally right.
I was suggesting more of a honor system kind of thing. The template is kind of set and doesn’t seem to be changeable which is unfortunate.
Notice how when you click on FanPosts at the top…you have a plethora of sorting options to easily be able to find threads that have been commented on. You don’t have that with FanShots (I wish you did), so I asked Will about it the other day and he said he couldn’t change that.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I agree with that
So we should also discuss what we as the community should do if a Fanpost should really be in Fanshots and visa versa. (I really want an OT; A-Team vs Airwolf Fanpost with pictures and analysis and stats.)
Flag or Rec seems like a good start.
So then we need to make the outline of what actually necessitates each and how we should handle it. Like your poll here, which I like but it is only a start we will have to do more polls to determine this properly.

Isn’t the Flag only to be used for offensive posts? As in, stuff that should be taken down?
To answer your first point, I don’t really think we need to DO anything other than to politely suggest that in the future we would prefer that you don’t use a Fanpost for two sentences. Though, that’s my opinion.
“So then we need to make the outline of what actually necessitates each and how we should handle it”
I suppose so. You may disagree with me, but we have two separate categories, so it seems to me that they should have to separate purposes.
My opinion is that FP are for when the author is trying to make a point or conclusion or start a conversation with an indepth article. FS are for everything else.

how about a FanPost to spread the news
by SagehenMacGyver47 on May 25, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Way too many fanposts lately
which has sent the signal to noise ratio off kilter. The fanposts should be complete articles, not, “hey, what do you think about player X or non-baseball related topic?” (those are fine for fanshots). This has also lead to mutliple duplicate posts on the same thing, sometimes days after a news item came out.
The good fanshots tend to get front page treatment or lots of recs. The ones that do not usually do so for a reason, either due to limited interest in the topic or quality of the post.
by Gopherballs on May 25, 2010 6:14 PM EDT reply actions 5 recs
basically agree
a fanpost should generally be thought of as an entire “post” /article/commentary whatever
Other: the poster and post should be in-sync with the flow of RR at the time
Sometimes there’s a ton of stuff going on, including lots of ‘Posts and ’Shots, and OT threads, open-ended discussion topics, etc. are just wastes of space and push more important/Royals-related ’Posts/’Shots down. Then again, there’s periods (off-season, for instance) where a meaningless OT thread doesn’t get in the way and does no harm.
Part of crafting a good post — one which improves the RR experience — is understanding what content you may be moving off the front page. Of course less deference is due to FanShots than FanPosts, but either way, there’s some respect to be shown, and observing that and how to handle it is a matter of experience.

This right here is a very good point
how we define a fanpost/fanshot should and will change as the flow of topics at RR and the Royals organization change
I suspect we are getting lots more Fanshots/Posts because of Yost, he is just a better manager and we are seeing RR reflect that too.
but joking aside in the Offseason there should be a little more slack when it comes to Posts vs Shots because there isn’t too much. When a offseason move happens then we all should self police and observe a tightening of the Posts/Shots definition.
Now when RR becomes self aware – I call the plasma gun!

Sounds good to me.
This has never been a “problem” in the offseason, that is for sure. Things go slow then.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I think that goes back to the template problem.
However, there aren’t that many people doing polls (excepting the weird rival thing) that often.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
What is up with the rival thing anyhow?
As a newcomer…has that gone on in the past or is it a one-time thing?
It's some guy from Arrowhead Pride doing it...
I hadn’t seen it before him.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I'm guilty then
Of placing polls in the FanPosts more to generate discussion than to add author content, though I tried the couple times to add commentary on the choices. I went through ‘orientation’ but it’s beneficial as a relative newbie to see the discussions today.
I think the commentary on the choices would probably warrant a
FanPost, but I don’t know. There isn’t any rules about posting which is why we’re having this discussion. So, no big.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Again, this is just my opinion and some people disagree...
but I’d say not at all. You spent some time on it, at least. It’s mostly the ones that obviously took five minutes that bother me.
Some people think that if you aren’t sure, then you should make it a FS. I don’t think that has to be a rule though. I just would like to get the quickies moved to the quicky section.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
i think that if someone wants to post something to merely strike a conversation and they deem the fanpost section the most viable way to do so then so be it. if you dont want to add your piece then dont, if you do then im sure the author will welcome it.
all this is subjective either way.
Almost everything is subjective...
besides, the point of this exercise is to form a group definition. If the majority is for it, then that’s fine…if not, then maybe we should use the categories a bit more thoughtfully.
Otherwise, why even have two separate categories if there isn’t any distinction between them?
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Where do I find this "quicky section"?
I would probably spend a lot of time there.
Don't Stop Believing!
To me
The difference between a FanShot and a FanPost should be this:
If you actually cared enough about the subject that you sat down and WROTE something of substance, it’s a FanPost. If you cared so little that you can get away with two short paragraphs, it’s a FanShot.

As a whole, I will FanPost off topic posts.
My 2 cents
We (Will and I) have deleted posts that are doubled up. As a whole, everyone does a good job here of deleting doubled up posts.
I wish all news would stay as a FanShot.
Also, Will and I have the ability to keep a post around longer. Let us know if there is one that discussion is still going on with a FanShot or FanPost and we will keep it on the main page until interest declines.
