OT: What defines a Fanpost?

There has been some interesting discussion (again) about what should be required to make a Fanpost in the discussion of a different article found here.  I thought it would be interesting to get other people's thoughts on the matter.  My argument can be found in the discussion in the link provided as can the opposing argument.

Star-divide

Yes, I am extremely aware of the irony of making a FanPost about what content is necessary to make a FanPost.  I tried to make a FanShot, but I didn't see an option to make a poll in there.  That probably hurts my argument a little bit, but perhaps not.

As I said before, I don't mind an occasional off-topic fan post

A fan post should be more substantial than a fanshot, which is designed for quick hitting ideas/links, etc.

by Freneau on May 25, 2010 5:11 PM EDT reply actions

I agree 100%, but I don't think...

that the Fanposts in question have been substantial.

I kind of wish there was an in-between

I think Fanposts should be in-depth column-style works that have been well-researched and remain on the side bar for awhile as “highlighted pieces”.

I think Fanshots should just be links to other articles and columns around the interwebs.

But then there should be some sort of forum where people can just ask random question, discuss random topics, that aren’t as fleshed out as Fanposts.

Except I think you could have threads divided out and sorted like on a message board.

But if that brings along the elements you see on a message board, then no thanks.

That'd be nice...

but don’t Fanshots already serve that purpose anyway. I’ve always used them for random questions, at least.

I always go to a Fanpost if I want to read something. I got to a Fanshot to discuss something. Maybe that’s just me, but that’s how I always approached it.

When I go to Cici’s pizza buffet, I’ll look at the Fanshots on my phone while I’m eating. I can’t really type on my phone and it takes a while for things to load sometimes. It’s disappointing to open up a Fanshot to read and see it’s only three sentences long.

No doubt.

I love, love, love this site which is why I’ve been coming back for 4 years. My problem is that it is actually too active sometimes and I lose conversations and whatnot (and the search function is a bit lacking when searching for “new” comments). I don’t mind losing Fanshot conversations, but the Fanposts ones make me sad.

I like Fanposts to be a little bit of writing

but not necessarily on topic (check out Jeffs awesome Fanpost on his potential Wiffle Ball Stadium, also Beer post)

Though “topic” is a relatively loose term as well considering the cros section of the people that read and post at RR.( YEAH, I know this is a baseball blog, but don’t tell me you don’t like it when Will posts a poem……that keeps me coming back no mater what happens )

I like OT stuff from time to time. The only problem is if you post something that is bordering Fanshot/Fanpost and you default by placing it in Fanshots it gets buried down the page in Fanshot purgatory.

A-Team vs Airwolf-this shit keeps me up at night!

So I really don’t care as long as this doesn’t turn into AP, and from this post and the discussion generated in the OT-Beer thread I doubt highly RR will ever spiral outta control like that.

Therefore, if I don’t like a Fanpost due to some arbitrary structural problem, I don’t rec it. It will get pushed down a bit faster, and no one will be the wiser. It wont be placed in Recommended Fanposts and it wont push down a truly epic Fanpost.

However if something really is wrong Will, or Jeff can do their mod. magic.

I really haven’t been bothered by any kind of posting or people on RR, which for how often I visit/read/comment that is a surprising thing.

In summation; Baseball is what brings me here, the analysis and knowledge from numerous people allows me to learn stuff I didn’t know existed, the OTs/Openthreads keep me here.

Agree

I really have nothing to complain about how things are moderated/structured now to be honest. If a Fanshot has little substance, it probably won’t generate much conversation and won’t be on the sidebar in a day or two. It is amazing how much content is provided by users (browse around other MLB SB Nation sites and you’ll be surprised at how little activity there is)

“I like OT stuff from time to time. The only problem is if you post something that is bordering Fanshot/Fanpost and you default by placing it in Fanshots it gets buried down the page in Fanshot purgatory.”

This seems like an argument in my favor. If things are getting buried as Fanshots and then everyone uses your logic and makes it a Fanpost…what do you think will happen then?

Fanshots go faster because they are quick little blurbs…Fanposts go slower because they have content and take time to create. If we start having Fanposts that are nothing more than 2 sentences that took 12 seconds to think of…I think we are doing a disservice to those who are composing something with some thought.

You're totally right.

I was suggesting more of a honor system kind of thing. The template is kind of set and doesn’t seem to be changeable which is unfortunate.

Notice how when you click on FanPosts at the top…you have a plethora of sorting options to easily be able to find threads that have been commented on. You don’t have that with FanShots (I wish you did), so I asked Will about it the other day and he said he couldn’t change that.

"I DARE you to make less sense."

by dejackso on May 25, 2010 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with that

So we should also discuss what we as the community should do if a Fanpost should really be in Fanshots and visa versa. (I really want an OT; A-Team vs Airwolf Fanpost with pictures and analysis and stats.)

Flag or Rec seems like a good start.

So then we need to make the outline of what actually necessitates each and how we should handle it. Like your poll here, which I like but it is only a start we will have to do more polls to determine this properly.

To answer your first point, I don’t really think we need to DO anything other than to politely suggest that in the future we would prefer that you don’t use a Fanpost for two sentences. Though, that’s my opinion.

“So then we need to make the outline of what actually necessitates each and how we should handle it”

I suppose so. You may disagree with me, but we have two separate categories, so it seems to me that they should have to separate purposes.

My opinion is that FP are for when the author is trying to make a point or conclusion or start a conversation with an indepth article. FS are for everything else.

basically agree

a fanpost should generally be thought of as an entire “post” /article/commentary whatever

by Freneau on May 25, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Other: the poster and post should be in-sync with the flow of RR at the time

Sometimes there’s a ton of stuff going on, including lots of ‘Posts and ’Shots, and OT threads, open-ended discussion topics, etc. are just wastes of space and push more important/Royals-related ’Posts/’Shots down. Then again, there’s periods (off-season, for instance) where a meaningless OT thread doesn’t get in the way and does no harm.

Part of crafting a good post — one which improves the RR experience — is understanding what content you may be moving off the front page. Of course less deference is due to FanShots than FanPosts, but either way, there’s some respect to be shown, and observing that and how to handle it is a matter of experience.

This right here is a very good point

how we define a fanpost/fanshot should and will change as the flow of topics at RR and the Royals organization change

I suspect we are getting lots more Fanshots/Posts because of Yost, he is just a better manager and we are seeing RR reflect that too.

but joking aside in the Offseason there should be a little more slack when it comes to Posts vs Shots because there isn’t too much. When a offseason move happens then we all should self police and observe a tightening of the Posts/Shots definition.

Now when RR becomes self aware – I call the plasma gun!

what are you talking about?

In fairness

You could make more than one paragraph with some proper punctuation. Just.

i am at work and just quick typing…you know what im saying and the point comes across rather smoothly. you are posting on my fanposts so what is the big deal?

by jeremy46 on May 26, 2010 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess that is the whole point

You are doing something very quick, and not putting much into it. That should be a fanshot, not a fanpost.

by kcbottom9th on May 26, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

there is substance to it. i would not post anything if i did not want feedback on my thoughts, theories or ideas. i think the problem is that some take this way too serious and others are here simply for the conversation and getting to know people.

by jeremy46 on May 26, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

The substance consists of:

I like beer, what kind of beer do you like?

That’s the thought more or less from beginning to end. Put it in a fanshot and get just as many replies then we aren’t even having this discussion.

Not hard bro.

but it is more than a shot…it is a post, i say they do away with the fanshot completely and just have the posts. if you dont like the topic, you dont respond. Not hard bro

but what if

it

has

nine

paragraphs?

what

then

I

ask

you?
