What 3 pitchers would you start a team with right now?
I need a distraction from the debacle that is the Royals. I was watching Ubaldo Jimenez look amazing once again tonight (albeit slightly inefficient with his pitches) and it got me thinking about what current pitchers I'd really like to have if I was starting a team.
My three: Greinke, Lincecum, Jimenez
Next on my list was Felix Hernandez and you will certainly get no argument from me if he's one of your three. The pool I chose from also included Verlander, Hanson, Kershaw, and Josh Johnson. I stayed away from guys nearing or over 30 but you could also make a case for someone like Halladay, Wainwright, Sabathia, or Haren. I think it's too early to pick someone like Strasburg or Chapman.
Who would you pick?

To clarify a bit
Felix has been better statistically to date than Jimenez and he’s younger, but I feel that Jimenez will be more dominate in his prime than Felix. Felix will probably have a longer career. Still, every time I watch Jimenez pitch I can’t help but think he’s a top 3 pitcher right now.
BTW – based purely on statistics between the three I chose and Felix, Lincecum has by far the best numbers to date. He’s been amazing in his career so far. Just think what the Royals could have been with Greinke and Lincecum in the same rotation…
*dominant

(Sorry, I’ve never understood this particular misuse by people. The words seem so far apart to me)
I know the difference
I changed the sentence and forgot to edit dominate to dominant. These things happen when you type/edit quickly.
Even with multiple college degrees people can make spelling/grammatical errors when they are in a rush – that’s why writers have editors to look over their work. Bloggers don’t always have that luxury
Nah- typos I understand
And that’s what it sounds like was the case so: my bad.
Back to what I was talking about- I do see that one (when it’s not a typo) a lot in talking about sports (and, as I said, it’s just kindof baffling- I understand they’re/their/there somewhat but dominant/dominate). I just figured it would be as decent a place as any to bring up the topic here and didn’t mean anything of it towards you.
So, again, sorry
No worries
No apology necessary. Just wanted to differentiate myself from the people who post stuff containing the word “rediculous” or “defanite” :)
jimenez, greinke, hernandez
not thrilled with all the miles on verlander’s arm already.
I'm not much of a Verlander fan either
But due to age/stats to date, he at least had to be part of the pool I was considering
Lets see
think i’d have to get Strasburg in there. Greinke would be there for sure.
Last pick would come down to Halladay, Felix, and Hanson I think. Depending on the time horizon I might have to go with Halladay just because the guy is just so good. But if we’re looking at something longer than ~5 years then I think I’d probably look at Hanson and Hernandez. If you’re worried about the mileage on Verlander’s arm, you have to be worried about Hernandez’s at some point. Felix is 4 months older than Hanson, but has 850 more major league innings on his arm. That is a huge innings differential, and for me is probably the kicker.
I go Strasburg, Greinke, Hanson.
But Timmy isn't?
I know people are still scared his arm will drop off, but he has to at least be in the conversation.
Lincecum, Jimenez, Greinke
OH NOES I DON’T HAVE A CLOSER!

I like Jimenez, but the Rockies are looking to blow at that arm

The 128 was the no hitter, so I'm okay with that
The 120 and the 121 are inexcusable though
No argument here.
I think it’s a tossup between Ubaldo and Felix, but as managers and coaches love to say, there are worse problems to have than trying to decide between those two guys.
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
What I read the headline my immidiate thought was
Greinke, Lincecum, Jimenez….but you’re an asshole and already took them.

King Felix, Strausburg, Cain, Kershaw, Verlander, Price are all solid picks as well.
Wade Davis looks pretty salty as well.

Greinke, Strasburg, King Felix...
Ive read that Lincecum has already lost velocity on his fastball, I just dont see how that little guy can hold up. Perhaps he eventually has to turn into a Greg Maddox type pitcher.

true
but as his fastball has fallen from 94 to 92 to 91 mph his bb/9 has fallen from 3.33 to 2.72 to 1.78 taking his FIP and xFIP with it.
Dude is even getting 50% ground ball pct. Unreal
Is it bad
That I’m already planning on teaching my kid to throw like him?
His dad needs to write a book.

One of the few times this will ever be mentioned on Royals Review (or SBNation for that matter)
Of course first I need a kid.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.
For the sake of argument
would like to see someone take on my take on Hanson vs Hernandez and the 850 IP differential between the two.
Do others feel it will have the same effect as I do?
Joe Nathan, Mariano Rivera, and Trevor Hoffman
That way I've already got the 7th, 8th, and 9th locked up so my starters just need to go 6!
Greinke, Lincecum, and Strasburg
Not that there aren’t a lot of excellent choices, but since we’re starting a new team, we want young players, the younger the better.
My top three pitchers never to permit anywhere near a mound are Nomo, Ponson, and Tomko.
