    Dayton is incredibly thin-skinned

“People who look at you with a critical spirit – they want you to fail.”

One of the stupidest and most arrogant statements ever heard.

I guess I could look for myself

I couldn’t find where the term “critical spirit” was coined, but all of the top Google hits were Christian related.

Do you have a Critical Spirit? By Dr. Dale A. Robbins
The person with a critical spirit usually dwells on the negative, seeks for flaws rather than good. They’re a complainer, usually always upset, and generally have a problem or a complaint about something. They often have little control over their tongue, their temper, and have tendencies for gossip and slander, which Paul said were sins "worthy of death" (Rom. 1:29-32).
Romans 14:10 "Why do you criticize and pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you look down upon or despise your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.
    (12) And so each of us shall give an account of himself – give an answer in reference to judgment – to God.
    (13) Then let us no more criticize and blame and pass judgment on one another, but rather decide and endeavor never to put a stumbling block or an obstacle or a hindrance in the way of a brother."

I basically did the same thing

who knows, maybe its just the word “spirit” throwing things off

it does seem connected to scripture or osteen or somesuch however

My problem is that no one ever wanted Dayton to fail

He’s tilting at windmills, beating a straw man, defending himself by attacking someone who doesn’t exist. Also, as you know, criticism is a neutral word, not necessarily negative. “Criticize” means “evaluate.” Dayton is angry that people dare to evaluate his performance negatively.

Pretty harsh critique of Barça there

I don’t agree that Alves has played badly over the last four months. I do agree that Ibrahimovic has turned out to be a bust, at least compared to what he was supposed to be. I don’t understand the hate for Sergio Busquets; yeah, he’ll take a dive, but so will everybody else but Gary Lineker. I agree that Inter outplayed Barça this time; you can’t win them all, but winning the ’09 CL and making the final four in ’10 is nothing to be ashamed of.

Also, consider what Barça has done in this year’s Spanish league: they’re 29-6-1 with 93 points, one ahead of Real Madrid, who are 30-2-4 with 92. There are still two games to go, and unless Madrid slips up Barça has to win out. In third place is Valencia with 68 points, showing the total superiority of Spain’s Big Two. If Barça wins out that’ll be 99 points, a record for the Spanish league.

RE: Alberto Callaspo becomes a royal

This is the official Buckner trade thread. The comments are pretty awesome.

"I DARE you to make less sense."

    That thread reminded me

Of the existence of Jason Smith.

How could I forget him so quickly?

by kcbottom9th on May 6, 2010 7:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I had two major thoughts about that thread

    1. People thought that Callaspo was good enough defensively to play SS?

    2. What happened to Jason Smith? and Has Tug done anything?

"I DARE you to make less sense."

Yea, I remember being impressed with his SS defense at one time.

Well not impressed, but I thought he could hold his own.

Callaspo definitely filled out once he got out of his early 20s

It happens. Betancourt looked like a scarecrow when he made the majors.

    just wait until he's 30

Butler is somewhat of a conundrum in that his hitting skill set ages well, yet his body type absolutely does not. I honestly don’t know which side wins that fight. While locking him up through his arbitration years and maybe first year of free agency is not a bad idea, I would not give him the Evan Longoria lifetime contract unless the free agent years are all team options with dirt cheap buyouts.

just not turn into a slug like Mo Vaughn

He should add power as he ages, but if he cannot get around on fastballs, or chug into second on a ball off the wall, or stay healthy, it will not matter.

I've heard this attributed to the weight program Ty Hill got him on

Which has lead to the power surge, which has been pretty remarkable for a guy who showed basically zero power in the minor leagues

Reading that thread made my day -- I hit the trifecta!
Anyway, sure, give Pena a shot, but I really hope it’s not at the expense of Callaspo. That’s an actual prospect with an actual record of success in the minors, not just some guy we traded for that was about to go on waivers.

If Pena or Grudz’s presence somehow relegates Callaspo to a utility infield role, then there is something wrong with either Moore or Hillman.

“I would trade Teahen for Andrew Sonnanstine
    David Bush
Ian Snell (would probably take more than Teahen to land him though)
    Noah Lowry "

Wow, all those guys suck now.

    I wouldn't mind having Snell

    in our bullpen.

"I DARE you to make less sense."

by dejackso on May 6, 2010 8:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Snell is making too much now

but once he’s non-tendered after the season, swoop in and sign him cheap. He does not have anything to throw lefties (unless his change up comes back, which cannot be counted on), so he is probably limited to mid-leverage situations against mostly righty hitters. But maybe the move to the pen adds enough velocity to his fastball to get away with pitching to lefties now and then.

    Wow, Sam

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sam Mellinger write so frankly down on the Royals. Not in the Star, anyway. He’s not as much of a pure suck-up as Kaegel, but usually when he doesn’t have something good to say, he’ll find a nostalgia angle to write about rather than come right out and rip the Royals as being bad.

    Only Mellinger could write

an article on how lousy our pitching staff is and how great our pitching coach is. I was frankly more interested in Hillman/McClure’s use of Tejada in a blowout game than Bannister’s walks. While you have a pitching staff that get’s a lot of walks/lack of command you have a pitching staff that is physically unconditioned to do what they do, and also a management team that fails to make the connection.

by Coach Feb on May 6, 2010 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

Cleveland may be done this year

but they are a good bet to rebound going forward and make a push for 77-80 wins. Their offense is much better than how they have performed so far, their pitching is not as bad as it has been, Cabrera and Peralta are not as bad of fielders as they have been so far, and they should get a boost when they start promoting prospects like Santana (and non-prospects like Shelley Duncan).

That Hafner contract, however, is going to hurt for a long, long time.

by Gopherballs on May 6, 2010 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

    What's up with Sizemore?

Is he done? Are the performance drop last year and the slow start this year just random aberrations? Or is this a chronic back problem situation.

    The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on May 6, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Sizemore tried to play through his back problem last year

and put off the surgery until September, which explains his performance last year. It also probably involved some change in his swing and approach, so some re-adjustment period shoudl be expected. He missed a couple games earlier due to a stiff back, but I have not heard any other ongoing problems with the back. At this point, I would say it is still at the “monitor” stage, not the “concerned” or “worried” stages.
