Trey Hillman's future

With the team on a five game losing streak, including at least 3 games that they should have won, and after Gil Meche threw 128 pitches on Saturday night. It's time for a poll regarding the job future of Royals manager Trey Hillman.

As you know, Trey Hillman's contract is up at the end of 2010.

Hillman's odd managing moves, along with his complete unwillingness to hold players accountable for bad play seems to support the idea of not bringing him back in 2011. How are young players expected to develop with a manager who isn't respected by the veterans? Not to mention a manager whose icy demeanor reminds long time fans of Tony Muser.

But most of the problems of this team are due to Dayton Moore's complete inability to put together a major league team (but don't worry, he can identify major league-worthy prospects, really). So members of Team Hillman can deflect the blame for Hillman's bad record back onto Moore. Also, some could call for stability in the organization or claim that Hillman isn't any worse than the average manager.

Here is the question for the esteemed sweatpants-wearing Royals blogosphere.

I disagree

There are over 120 games left this season. Having even a semi-competent manager could make a big difference to the younger players, not to mention the fans. Having a decent second half of the season and maybe avoiding 100 losses would be a big deal, in my opinion. I don’t know if I can keep watching and following this team with Hillman as manager.

I voted to fire him before the end of the season because I want to get a look at Gibbons during the regular season if he’s going to be considered for the 2010 job.

this team is not THIS bad

hillman has done a lot of stupid things and he seems to be getting worse. the 128 pitches by meche just borders on insanity (actually it is insanity by definition).

i get that we are maybe a 75-win team, which still sucks but is at least somewhat respectable. hillman has actively taken wins away from this team in a number of instances.

however, once moore fires hillman, he’s going to be on the clock, b/c i don’t see him making it past another manager with the way the team is going…at some point (soon), moore’s plan/process has to show actual results at the major-league level.

You aren't the only one that does this, so this isn't aimed at you (and you didn't specifically state it)

But can we please stop using the “insanity = doing the same shit over and over and expecting different results” thing?

how can the primary definition of insanity be

‘the condition of being insane’

Webster’s is getting lazy.

Or as Webster’s would define it: “the condition of being lazy”

It's actually a quote

People use the phrase as a definition of insanity, but actually it’s a quote made famous by Albert Einstein.

Oddly, Einstein Is

One of the people who would do the same thing and get different results. It’s all relative.

Actually, it's not an Albert Einstein quote

it’s from a 1983 Rita Mae Brown novel called Sudden Death.

It’s a common misattribution.

I Tried To

Find evidence of this via Google and was unable to do so. I’ll check that. I’m a cranky old man, and this annoys the hell out of me, too.

Most people that use the quote are or know an alcoholic

Even though it may not be a perfect definition, it works in the context of the problems they are dealing with currently.

What does it matter?

Really? What will it accomplish? We will still suck and lose and it will only buy Dayton more time because “you have to be patient with the new skipper”. I don’t understand Meche throwing 128. That does seem stupid, but won’t the next guy just do the same thing? Casey Stengall wouldn’t make this team a contender. Giving a great manager shitty players won’t work. Ned Yost or John Gibbons will fail too.

Fire Dayton Moore Now!!!!!!!!!

Trey's still getting slightly better at playing the younger players

Sure, it’s only taken him, what, 3 years but at least we’re occasionally seeing some Mike Aviles or Kila last night or he finally realized that Mitch Maier in CF is a good idea. I… can’t explain Kendall/Pena.

So, if you go for “what’s in the box”, Monty might give you a good, nurturing manager who will play the young guys and see what we have. Or, GMDM might just hand us a retread who loves veterans and doesn’t understand why you’d play Mitch over Ankiel when he gets back or who runs out Batter Nine, You Sucky and Spork every day at MI rather than trying Aviles and Getz.

Maybe We Could

Get Davey Johnson to come out of retirement.
http://miscbaseball.wordpress.com/2009/12/04/davey-johnson-the-mets-and-sabermetrics/

In fact, after he retired as a player in the 1960s, Johnson went to work selling computers for Litton Industries. He introduced the computer to minor league baseball when he managed the Tidewater Tides in 1983. By then, Johnson had read "The Hidden Game of Baseball" (about exotic statistics), "Computer Baseball" and Ernshaw Cook’s highly regarded "Percentage Baseball." Johnson has added such phrases as "favorable chance derivation" and "upslope of the sine curve" to baseball’s lexi-con and perhaps its lore.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davey_Johnson

He attended the Johns Hopkins University in addition to Texas A&M, and graduated from Trinity University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. 1 He was known for taking a statistical approach to baseball.

by BHWick on May 10, 2010 7:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I say fire him soon.

Gibbons plays out the season as interim manager and you have time to look for a long-term replacement without upsetting the sitting manager while also evaluating a potential candidate in Gibbons. In sports it always seem like a good idea to fire early because you have a better shot at coaches. The Chiefs waited too long to fire Herm Edwards and hired Haley late. I think that put them behind a year on there rebuilding because they couldn’t get good assistants.

The Royals kind of did this with Buddy Bell because he announced his “retirement” and was nothing more than an interim manager the rest of the season.

by Chyladin on May 10, 2010 1:46 AM EDT reply actions

Look at the good franchises.

None of them are firing their manager every 2-3 years. It’s disgraceful that the Royals are in their 42nd season and no manager has reached his fifth anniversary.

I’d like Hillman to at least stay to get 411 wins. I’m tired of Herzog holding the record as few Royals have done more than him to burn bridges. (Book attacking the Kauffmans, behavior in the 1985 WS, etc.)

Why does Gibbons need a tryout?

I could be behind firing Hillman just because Gibbons will win more games this season than Trey would the Royals get a jump on hiring for 2011. Those are good enough reasons in and of themselves.

However, I’m having a hard time justifying the need to give Gibbons a “tryout”. For what reasons does he need a tryout? Do we want to see if he can avoid having a confrontation with a player for 120 games? He is a known quantity. 2004-2008 is enough of a track record. Do people think he has changed substantially?

I really wish I would have known my life as a fan would peak in October 1985. Savor the moment, kids.

No on Gibbons

He gave TPJ an IBB to pitch to Dejesus.

There is a reason he is no longer coaching.

Hillman needs to be fired now. No question about it

Yes wins for me, but here are my two sides

Hillman may hurt the team by not playing (or lobbying for playing, if GMDM is mandating who plays) the younger players more, but GMDM is tied to Hillman — the longer GMDM sticks with a manager that hurts the team’s record, the worse GMDM looks and the sooner he is gone. While innocent bystanders like Kila and Aviles may get the short end of the stick, Hillman is not costing the team Division titles or anything like that, so if he helps GMDM find the door faster, then keep him on as long as necessary.

Soren Petro

went on a two hour segment about Hillman probably needing to be fired. Didn’t come right out and say it but pretty close. Pretty much just an attack on the Royals whole organization, well deserved too.

to vent about Hillman/Royals as well.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring.

I don't see what is to be gained by firing him before the end of the year

My fear would be that the team mildly improves under Gibbons, as most teams with interim managers do, and the Royals mistake that for real improvement, and hand Gibbons the job full-time next year.

Clean up on aisle 2.

I watched three of the games, two on the Ranger Network. It is amazing how poorly Trey manages this ballclub. He really lost the one game when he inserted Guillen into right, and put Maier at First. I predicted that a shot to right would win for the Rangers—and it did. He lets Meche throw his arm out, he plays that sorry Yuni over and over.

I simply do not believe that he has the grey matter to manage. He seems not to be engagned with the game. The stupid mistake on Hamilton running down to second is a sign of a poorly managed club. Do something radical—hire Bobby Valentine and shake things up. Gibbons and Yost are the rebirth of Buddy Bell or worse.
I was there in the 70’s and 80’s and it was great. Let’s return. "

KC constantly finds new ways to screw up the game - that's on Trey's head

They lose 2-1 or 13-12. They don’t play fundamentally sound baseball even though it is emphasized by the coaching staff. Trey makes lots of goofy decision either out of stubborn pride, ignorance or taking bad advice. All are a poor excuse for management. The pitchers don’t throw strikes despite the emphasis on ST that KC would carry strike throwers. The makeup of the roster is awful – don’t play B. Pena at all when we have a catcher who is ancient in baseball years. Mismanagment of Meche when the bullpen is rested. Maier playing 1st base. Trey can’t seem to see productive players like Aviles playing everyday while playing Yuni. Placing Guillen in the field anytime is crazy. What is Willie Bloomquist’s role on the team?

I don’t think KC is this bad but my greatest fear for the season is they will get worse. How can Greinke not have a win yet?
