Royals Review Prospect Pulse: June
After an extremely successful first 6 weeks of the season, the month of May ended on an ominous note in the Royals' minor league system. Injuries to Moose and Monty coupled with struggles from Hoz and Crow have left some question marks that will hopefully be answered in June. Of course, June is also a big month because this list will probably look a lot different after the draft and after short-season ball starts in the middle of the month.
There were some success stories in May: John Lamb had a great month and got promoted to Wilmington. Wil Myers tore apart the Midwest league--very tough for a teenager to do. Salvador Perez turned 20 while performing well in the Carolina League. Perez and Myers give the Royals some depth in the minors at catcher. And there may be one more piece of promising news: over at the Scout Royals board, there are rumors that there will be Dan Duffy news in the next few days. I don't normally give message board rumors much credence but the poster this is coming from consistently has info before the regular public does.
As always starts are for hitters: avg--obp--slg and for pitchers: K/9---BB/9--FIP ERA| Rank | Name | Last Month | May Stats | YTD | Comment |

Player of the Month: Mike Moustakas
All Moose did this month was change perceptions from him being first round bust to one of the top power hitting prospects in the game. His power is huge and he has increased his batting average thanks to more line drives, fewer K's, and some luck on BABIP. His walk rate has increased but most of that is due to intentional walks. I haven't heard much about his defense this year but it has always graded out as excellent according to Total Zone. I think the Royals would like to keep him in AA all this year and bring Hosmer up to AA and have the most talented team in the minors but Moose might force their hand. He could certainly be ready for the big show by the start of 2011 but I'm greedy and wouldn't mind pushing his FA clock back a year by waiting until the beginning of June 2011.

Why is Osuna toiling away in AA? Seems like he's due for a promotion

Seriously, I know I'm being negative again
but without knowing the specifics of Osuna’s situation, the notion of letting a potential minor league championship effect promotions/demotions etc. seems completely stupid to me. Maybe I’m the crazy one, though.

Maybe MD thinks that
it would help justify the spending in drafts and Latin America if the minor league team in David Glass’s hometown won a championship.
Don't Stop Believing!
Speaking of Osuna, Harry P looks at 5 "new" pitchers a week at BtB and Osuna is in his poll for players to look at new week
Currently he will make the cut, but go over and give him a few votes to make sure:

Why would you want him to go where the losers are like Gordon and Kila and all the other scrubs who can't make KC?

Keating
Keating seems to be moving up your board pretty fast, and deservedly so. How well do you think he will fare in a hitters park like NW AR?
Good work as always.
I’m wondering if some of those guys will get moved up a level a week after the draft when all the other spots can be filled. The draft gives you the ability to start a kid in A ball and move him to A+ and a new guy into his spot. We’ll see some shuffling.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
Unlikely that any would start in A ball right off
Most of the guys who sign that quick aren’t high enough caliber to go directly to A ball, they help fill the three short season rosters. The top picks that should go to A ball aren’t allowed to play that early b/c Selig won’t approve the contracts until August. it is possible that guys still at extended spring training could get sent to Burlington if enough draftees sign, but my guess is they’d be there already if they were ready for A ball.
With that said, there’s a lot of short season talent to look forward to this year: 7 on the list, plus toolsy youngers like Justin Trapp and Guelin Beltre, plus this year’s draftees.
It's all ball bearings these days!

The Duffy rumors are true....good scoop from Rany and Scout.
Apparently there is a news conference in the next hour stating he is back. Good news for sure.
It all happens here. the royals came to play and so did you. more to do than you can shake a foam finger at.

I love how Kila has a .500 OBP for the year and Dayton Moron still won’t promote him AND HAVE HIM PLAY
What a loser
KC needs to rebel
Questions
Is Perez better deffensively than Myers? If so, is there talk of moving Wil? I’ve heard he is very athletic, any chance of him taking the MITCH route?
She said "are you stupid or just apathetic?"
I said "I don't know and I don't care"
Right now, Perez is definitely better
Wil(l) is still learning the finer points of the position. There are some rumors of moving him off of C, but that seems premature, especially until Perez really proves he can be a good hitter. Most likely, Perez turns into a John Buck sort of guy who makes his rep with defense but can handle the bat OK, and can start or backup as needed.

Perez
Perez is supposed to be a good defender—his bat has been the surprise. Myers at catcher is a tough call—if you leave him there, his bat is going to be ready way before his defense is. If Perez develops into a legit prospect (or if they draft Grandal) they can afford to move Myers
catcher is covered in KC for the next5-8 years anyway

I would LOVE to see them use Myers as a C/OF/DH at the ML level
If they really think his bat’s ready, then have him catch 2 days, OF 3, and DH for 2 while he continues to hone the catching skill. Then Pina/Perez/other is a good defensive catcher to have training alongside him. And you don’t get the Mauer problem of wearing him down before he’s even in his 30’s b/c he’s catching every day.
But that would take some post-conventional baseball thinking, and since we’re not the Rays, I’m not holding my breath.

yes, I think so
but doesn’t that sort of coincide with Pina and/or Perez? And I could see Myers’s bat being “ready” by sometime in 2012. I just don’t want them to totally give up on him having C as his primary position just because he can hit but not field yet.

So where does our farm rank?
1. Moose
2.Monty
3.Hosmer
4.Lamb
5.Crow
6.Myers
7.Duffy(He’s back)
8.Argulles(needs to play)
9.Kila
10.Melville(still have hope)
That top 10 should match with most
This years draft will most likely add 1 and maybe even 2 guys who could jump in the top 10.
Also our depth looks good. Edgar Osuna, Chris Dwyer,Luis Coleman,Derrick Robinson,Johnny G,Kelvin Herra,Salvador Perez, etc.
Actually after this draft we should have a pretty good top 20 prospects which should match up with almost anyone elses.
Depends on promotions
In the next couple of weeks we could see several top prospects called up. Tampa still rules the roost—if Jennings and Hellickson get called up, the Royals would be in the discussion for #1, right now probably top 3. The trick is not to drop like a rock in the rankings just because a few good prospects get called up but to have consistent depth.
Holy Shit!
This is great news he was awesome last few years
YES YES, Now we got the 1 2 punch in MM and Duffy

Best thing about this season has been the most of the top picks are doing well
Out of the top 6 – all are on par or above expectations. Crow has struggled but it’s part of the minor leagues. Moose, Hosmer, Montgomery & Lamb have been dominate. Myers is playing well and learning to catch.
I have been pleased that Melville is recovering from early season problems. To me, I like to see how the really talented guys like him adjust to failing. Seems to have done well in past few starts.
Derrick Robinson has been a true revelation. It’s great to see a player begin to play into the tools/potential that everyone can see. I could see him in KC by end of 2011.
Others I have been pleased with in first two months: B. Hardy, Kila, M. Pina, Patrick Keating, Louis Coleman, Osuna, S. Perez, Bryan Paukovits & Chris Dwyer.
Disappointments: H. Richardson, Parraz, Deivy Bautista, Arguelles, Jason Taylor (before injury) Hayenga, & R. Navarro
Hosmer has been hitting well but he has no power
He’s Casey Kotchman
I like Myers playing so well. That’s huge. Also Lamb has been dominant too.
Last year its like we had 3 first round picks: Crow, Myers & Arguelles
by GobbleforCyoung on Jun 2, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Doubles count as "power"
And Hosmer is 5th in the Carolina League with 17. His slugging % of .510 is tied for 8th in the league. Also keep in mind that all of the guys in front of him in SLG don’t play in Frawley Stadium, the worst home run stadium in a pretty extreme pitcher’s league and one of the worst in all of the minor leagues. NWA and the Texas League should do for his HR numbers what they’ve done for Moose’s.

Moose hit more bombs than him what gives?
He was labeled as having the most raw power than any one in that draft class. I mean anyone. No reason to make excuses for him. I still think he;‘s a good prospect. Even if he’s not what he was billed to be. I have no problem with Don Mattingly being a Royal for the next 7 years

From Rany
Very few 20-year-olds – even 20-year-olds who project to be power hitters in the majors – hit a lot of homers in the minors. But they do tend to hit doubles. Miguel Cabrera hit just 9 homers in a full season of high-A ball in 2002. But he hit 43 doubles, and he was just 19 years old. The following year, after slugging over .600 in Double-A he was called up to the majors and hit 12 homers in 87 games, then 4 more homers in the postseason. The year after that he hit 33 homers.
Nice story and not to get technical but its one player and its a bad comparison
Just checked, and Cabrera started that high ball season in 2002 at 18 years old. The next year he had 10 HR’s in 200+ AB’s and started that season as a 19 year old. Hosmer will be 21 in October and still hasn’t hit 9 HR’s in his Minor league career. Hosmer was also the #3 overall pick. Cabrera was not even in the top 100 prospects in baseball when he was signed as a 17 year old
I have no problem with him he’s hitting way over .300 and looks to be a godo defensive 1B we need with Billy there right now. He was just billed as a future 40 homerun guy and he doesn’t appear to be that ever. Is it to early to tell. Hey maybe you are right.
Im exciting for Hosmer and Moose and they really are the future. Maybe Meyers can be included. Lets add another top college hitter so Hosmer, Myers, 1st round 2010 pick can all reach the majors a year after Moose becomes rookie of the year
by GobbleforCyoung on Jun 3, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't want to come across as dissin him either
I like the guy I like the player. Yes I get a little heated when I see guys like Posey, Bumgarner, Wieters and Matusz (the SF and Balt top picks from that year) or see Jason Heyward looking like the best player in baseball.
But I have high hopes for both Moose and Hsomer
They are clearly the two best hitters in the majors and if we can see a lineup with Moose, Hosmer and Butler in the 3-5 spots hey that’s great
I was just making a point of how he was hyped to have the most raw power of the entire draft class, yet clearly Myers/Moose are hitting more homeruns than him at the same (or younger age) in the same park for the same team. There is no way around it
by GobbleforCyoung on Jun 3, 2010 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions
you always rail on DM for picking HS players....
but then half of the example players you bring up, are HS guys.
Fire Everyone
by billybeingbilly on Jun 3, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't mind him picking HS players if they are better
Moose is a great pick, Hosmer not as much, because Posey Beckham look just as good.
The only guys that look better than Moose from 2007 are Heyward and Price
I think drafting two HS stars and pairing them with two college players they can in theory hit KC at the same time. But Hosmer is fine. I dont rag on DM because of these two picks. I don’t think you should give him credit any more than the GM’s of SF, TB and BALT who have as good of drafts as we have, maybe better. Kill DM for all the other fuckups, I think overall he’s done a decent job drafting players. i like Duffy, Myers, Lamb and MM too.

Beckham has been atrocious this year...
as i significantly worse than Betancourt…
Posey hasnt done shit.
Tim Beckham has been awful in the minors, Weiters hasnt done anything in the majors, Matusz hasnt been good, etc
Fire Everyone
by billybeingbilly on Jun 4, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I always wonder when people bring up Matusz
It’s not like he’s Lincecum or something. Matusz has been getting lit up enough that I dropped him from my fantasy teams.
Myers hasn't made it to that level yet.
In Adam Dunn‘s age 20 season, he hit 11 HRs. In Jeff Bagwell’s age 21 season, he hit 2 in 69 games. At age 22 he hit 4 in 136 games. Give the guy time to learn. He’s only played in 159 games.
Re-read Rany's post
That story isn’t the point: The point is that Hosmer’s got power potential. As Rany suggests, he’s a great hitter first, but he also could become a massive power source. There are countless examples of guys who didn’t hit a lot of home runs as 20-year olds but who became power bats as major leaguers. Not to mention that his ISO is almost exactly what Mous’s was in High-A at the same age.
He’s doing better at High-A than Moustakas did. Given what Mous has done in AA this year, this seems very promising. And if he becomes Billy Butler +5-10 HRs per year, that’s a very very good thing.
by billexgordler on Jun 7, 2010 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Too bad Jeff Bianchi is injured.
I wonder where he would rank. being he was having another solid year.
i am hoping we land a hitter in this years draft. Either Machado or Grandal…Plus i am excited to see if we take another sign-ability guy after the first like recent years.
Micheal Choice is a very interesting prospect. Maybe a Curtis Granderson type player.
Moose had a .171 ISO last year.
Hosmer has a .158 ISO this year. Both as 20 year olds at Wilmington..except Hosmer has an OBP about 120 points higher. At this point, I’d say Hosmer’s “lack of power” isn’t a concern at all. Let’s see what he does in AA next season and re-evaluate, I say. If Moose can go bonkers once he hits AA, so can Hosmer..not saying Hosmer will hit for the same power as Moose, but I think saying he has “no” power is going way too far.
