Five Things to Remember When Suggesting a Trade
- Players are, in effect, properties. It isn't just about their talent, but their contracts. Would you rather buy a two bedroom house for $100,000 (David DeJesus) or a three bedroom house in the same neighborhood for $250,000 (Lance Berkman)?
- Even without considering his contract, Jose Guillen is close to valueless on the trade market, so don't wear yourself out thinking of trade scenarios involving him.
- Ditto Scott Podsednik.
- Along the lines of #1, prospects and pre-arbitration players are extremely valuable, and teams realize this now more than ever.
- It is always possible that one team, even the Royals, could blatantly rip off another, but keep in mind that Dayton Moore already runs the Royals.

6. Steve Phillips, Dave Littlefield, and Chuck Lamar are no longer in the league to rescue you with stupid trades
7. This is not like OOTP where you can offer three crappy for one good player

What is OOTP?
I see that and all I can come up with is Harry Potter (Order Of The Phoenix – that’s the fifth one in case you care and didn’t know).
the one with the intriguing "Veil of Death?" idea that was totally abandoned?
the one with the idiotic an unnecessary Grawp subplot?
The one with the unlikable, whiny hero?
The “one” that was mysteriously allowed to go to press without an editor?
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs and Beyond the Box Score.

"Out of the Park",
it’s a baseball franchise simulator, I think

i have no idea what DDJ would be worth
but, i will say that the proposals i’ve seen for him from the fans of other teams are as bad as anything we’d do here.
And
8. The fact that a minor leaguer is included in a deal does not make him a prospect.
In trades essentially for cash or for players with little value (due to talent or salary), the trading team will often insist on getting an actual player in return just to have a name in the trade report. This player is almost always an organizational soldier who at best fills a need for one of the team’s minor league affiliates. They might not even be much better than current minor league free agents. In other words, there is no need to get excited if the Royals get another team’s version of Jeff Howell back in trade.
This
I frequented another board when Moore picked up Fernando Cortez as a throw in to the Howell trade.
It was amazing how many people penciled him in as the 2B of the future. Almost all of them prefaced by “Cortez wasn’t a throw-in, Dayton wouldn’t pick up a player unless he plans to use him”

Hey, how's Kendall doing hitting in the second spot?
At least no one here agreed with that decision, amirite?
It was on the scout board, and it was by some of the more ridiculous homers. I tried to go look it up, but their archives only go back to February of 2010.

People, i’ve seen a lot of talk about Fernando Cortez here being a possible player in the Majors.
Let’s go back a few weeks. James Howell for Joey Gathright and Fernando Cortez. Who was the REAL guy that Dayton wanted in this trade? It was Gathright. Cortez was a throw in to offset the qualities in J.P. What do you think Moore was gonna say about him in the press conference? “Oh yea Cortez is just a fill-in right now in AAA”? No. Sure Fernando is still young, and plays good defense. But seriously, Gotay and Blanco will get the shot before he does.
Let me say this. I’m not trying to bash Cortez, though it may sound like it. I just think that some people here are overrating this guy. He is a prospect with some upside, nothing more, IMO of course. Hopefully I can get to an O-Royals game and see him in person to get a better idea of how he really is.
Nah, I was probably just lying.

I think we should trade Guillen and Podsednik for Brandon Boesch.
I’d even pick up some of Guillen’s salary if necessary.

On the flip side
I’ve seen more than one trade proposal by Royals fans where we give away Alex Gordon for nothing.

Another
Just because a Royal (DDJ perhaps) is better than what another team has, and just because that team is a buyer doesn’t make them a potential trade partner. It’s about marginal improvement, and if you are say, the Mets, than you can improve more by upgrading something other than OF, even though DDJ would improve them.
