Royals vs. Cardinals Series Preview
There was some discussion on have a series preview in the Open Discussion Thread. I decided to give it a try for the Cardinal's series. Let me know what you like, what you don't like, what you want to see.
Note: I added some defensive stats and batter heat maps since the original article
General
40 - 31 in 1st Place in the NL Central with a 1 game lead in the Standing over the Reds
Pitching
Suspected starters for the series:
| Day | Time | Royals Starter | Cardinals Starter |
| Fri, Jun 25 | 08:10:00 PM | Greinke (2-8) | Suppan (0-2) |
| Sat, Jun 26 | 02:10:00 PM | Davies (4-5) | Unknown |
| Sun, Jun 27 | 02:10:00 PM | Chen (3-2) | Garcia (7-3) |
I can't find a source for who is going to start for the Cardinals on Saturday, but I will add the data as I find out.
The Cardinal Starters Stats:
| Name | K/9 | BB/9 | BABIP | ERA | FIP | xFIP | wFB/C | wSL/C | wCT/C | wCB/C | wCH/C |
| Jeff Suppan | 6.23 | 3.12 | 0.328 | 3.12 | 5.79 | 4.36 | -1.49 | -0.53 | -0.71 | -2.46 | |
| Jaime Garcia | 7.38 | 3.69 | 0.279 | 1.79 | 3.25 | 3.72 | 1.01 | 1.86 | 0.62 | 0.98 |
I have included the wXX/C value from Fangraphs.com to show which pitches the starter throws and the productivity of those pitches. The prefix "w" in front of any of the pitch types denotes runs above average. When the pitch type trails with "/C" it denotes per 100 pitches. wFB/C would be fastball runs above average per 100 fastballs. A positive value is good, negative value is bad. A value of 3 means the pitch is getting great results.
Projected Cardinals Lineup
The Cardinals have only had one series on the the road vs an AL team (Blue Jays) and here are the 3 lineups they used. Remember we are dealing with Tony LaRussa so it could be a new lineup every night.
| 06/22/10 | 06/23/10 | 06/24/10 | |

Batter Heat Maps
Again, another little experiment. I am not wanting to do a complete breakdown by count, but are few heat maps.
Albert Pujols
Run Values (values from here) - Red is good, blue is bad
Pitchers should keep the ball low and away with Albert. I looked at several other maps (less detailed, exact counts, etc) and they all show the same pattern, except he does better against LHP (C'om Chen). He really like to swing at the high ball and usually does good against it.
Swing Percentages (1.0 = swings at pitches there 100% of time, 0.0 is 0% of the time)
vs LHP
vs RHP
Matt Holliday - Matt is hacking at any ball near the strike zone, but only seems to have the best of luck with pitches in the center part of the plate. Looks like it would nice to nibble the strike zone with him.
Run Values
vs LHP
vs RHP
Defense Stats:
| Name | Pos | Inn | UZR | UZR/150 |
| Albert Pujols | 1B | 634 | -1 | -3 |
| Matt Holliday | LF | 595 | 9 | 21 |
| David Freese | 3B | 535 | 1 | 2 |
| Ryan Ludwick | RF | 530 | 9 | 27 |
| Colby Rasmus | CF | 525 | -5 | -13 |
| Skip Schumaker | 2B | 523 | -5 | -12 |
| Brendan Ryan | SS | 478 | 2 | 4 |
| Felipe Lopez | SS | 134 | -3 | -30 |
| Felipe Lopez | 3B | 98 | 1 | 13 |
| Felipe Lopez | 2B | 92 | 1 | 8 |
| Joe Mather | CF | 54 | -2 | -70 |
| Tyler Greene | SS | 37 | -1 | -23 |
| Randy Winn | CF | 35 | -1 | -35 |
| Jonathan Jay | RF | 34 | 1 | 7 |
| Nick Stavinoha | RF | 31 | 2 | 79 |
Note: A UZR of 20 is great for a season and about 5-6 player reach that level, so the UZR/150 of 70+ are based on small sample size.
Injury news:
Brad Penny is on the 15 day DL with a sore back
Ryan Ludwick is nursing a sore right calf. Did not play Wednesday or Thursday.

Thanks Jeff. This is good stuff
But what any series preview really needs is a “Where will Kendall bat in the order?” feature.
And Don't Forget
“Are They Our Greatest Rival”.

Locally, the Royals have been running a radio ad
That starts with the un forgettable line “In 1985, the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals played a series.”

I figured the talking heads and the MSM would have it all covered
If you are looking to get drunk, just have a drink every time 1985 is mentioned.

Interleague-wise, it's likely true
Even if it’s not a major rivalry like Yankees-Mets, who’s more of a rival to the Royals in the NL? The Pirates?
Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!
2nd Black and Gold; thanks for giving this a try.
I’ve been curious about how Suppan would end up after the change of scenery. Obviously, his numbers in Milwaukee were awful, but St. Louis resigned him after privately working him out, so clearly they liked what they saw.
Suppan seems to have (understandably) been on a pitch count in his first two starts back with StL, going 73 and 78, respectively. I’m curious how La Russa will handle him in his third start back, but I’d be surprised if he went above 95.
The position player I’ve been most intrigued by is Colby Rasmus. His ceiling is quite high, and he possesses a nice balance of power, speed, and size.

damn
we gotta call up Brian Anderson so he can pitch to Bryan Anderson, and destroy the existence of time. Has Baseball ever seen a pitcher and hitter with the same (or essentially the same) name match up?
since these games are under the rules of the Best League, LaRussa won’t do anything batshit crazy, like putting the pitcher’s spot after Pujols’ spot. But the Johnny Cash of Baseball will probably put his DH on the field when the score is 15-1 Cardinals.

Did Tony Pena and TPJ ever face each other?
I don’t remember if Pena was pitching with the White Sox while TPJ was around or not.

Hello Cousins
I read where your team is in a little slump right now. I hope it will last for the next 3 games, but wish you well after that. Also, where Is Rick Ankiel ?
As a Cards fan
you should know that Ankiel spends most of his time hanging around the DL. So where do you think he is now, smart guy?

I Want To
See Hoagy gone as much as anyone, but he really hasn’t sucked that bad this year. His line doesn’t look like much for a DH, but on this team this .275 .340 .471 .811 looks pretty good. Throw out his terrible May stats .202 .311 .356 .667 and he’s been a decent DH. He’s even been walking at a reasonable rate for him. I don’t expect him to sustain his current level of production, but credit where it’s due. Ankiel, on the other hand, has been a horrible CF and his offensive production has been 2 HR’s in one game and virtually nothing else. He’s first in line for those shoes as far as I’m concerned.

I keep saying we could get a little something
for Guillén, and Matt keeps saying that we can’t. I figure you can fool some of the people some of the time, and as teams sliding out of contention get desperate for a rental of a hitter having a decent season, somebody’s gonna bite. Hosey is a high-risk, possibly high-return gamble. A desperate one, to be sure, but desperate teams sometimes make risky bets.
"The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey" - Unfortunate cricket commentator
there's always a chance
but they couldn’t move him after a super-hot April, and they clearly wanted to.
IN any case, what the Royals can get back, if anything, is either a “live arm” or an organizational solder, and whatever it is, it isn’t worth playing Guillen every day while Kila rots in AAA

I agree they're not going to get anything for Pods
and he should just be DFAed now. I’d dump Pods, bring up Alex, send Betemit down, and bring up Kila. Then hold your nose and have Hosey and Kila split playing time until some desperate damn fool comes knocking.
You and I perhaps have a slightly different perspective on economics. You subscribe to the Rational Actor theory, according to which people, companies, baseball teams, etc. do what would be most beneficial for them. I do, too, to a degree. I figure people generally do what they think would be most beneficial for them, which is sometimes not rational at all. That’s probably a variation of the Greater Fool theory.
"The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey" - Unfortunate cricket commentator
I go back and forth
my main thing with Guillen is that none of the contending teams (i.e., teams that guillen would make sense for) are the right combination of a) really needing a right-handed DH only and b) the stupidity to think Guillen makes sense for them.

Who the heck is Jaime Garcia? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of him.
As for the batter chart, I think it suffers from TMI. Maybe instead of showing all the batters, just show the best and worst hitter, and the hottest and coldest hitter? And one other hitter of note.
He's a rookie this year
If not for Jesus and the J-Hey Kid, he might be more widely known. He’s put on a great rookie campaign so far, though.

On the offensive stats chart
I’d want to see PA, H, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K (or a ratio of BB:K?), and the triple slash. I realize that doesn’t eliminate much from the chart, though, so if others have ideas they should drop a hint.
Overall, great work.

I like the chart the way it is
Has most of the information you’d want and is easy on the eye. One thing you might do is eliminate hitters who are not currently on the roster.

Agreed
And it would be nice if it was organized by the probable starting 8, in descending order of OPS+ or maybe by position. Then a bold line with the rest of the bench guys in descending order of OPS+ or position. That would be a good way to quickly reference how a team’s top players/starters are doing.

Good work
The pitch linear weights are gold, and I am surprised more people (both the stat-inclined and scouting-inclined) do not cite them.
My minor suggestions:
1. Add GB% for pitchers, which would help fill in the gap for FIP, xFIP, and ERA.
2. For hitters, use K% and BB%. It provides the same information as the raw K or BB numbers but in a much more helpful manner. Current MLB average is 8.8% BB% and 18.2% K%.
3. For hitters, add wOBA (or replace OPS). (But I understand space constraints and accessibility issues.)
This is awesome

Here's something fun
From a gambling site I use to check odds on the games, just for the heck of it:
Free Play from Doc’s Sports. Take Kansas City (-1.5 +140) vs. St. Louis (8 pm ET) Zack Greinke is heading to the mound again for the Royals. He’s not the pitcher he was last year – not even close – but he’s rounding into some kind of form and I can at least be comfortable that he’s not going to implode here. What makes this pick attractive, though, is St. Louis starter Jeff Suppan. The Royals are surprisingly good at getting their bats on the ball – as they showed against Stephen Strasburg this week – and Suppan has been giving up way too many hits recently. That’s not a good combination. Suppan has struggled on the road, and just hasn’t been strong overall. He’s a good one to bet against here – especially because his team is mired in a two-game slump on offense.
Good piece
Someone suggested this when suggestions were requested, and this is excellent rapid response. I now know a lot more about the Cards than I did before.
There is a rivalry, but it’s mostly on the Royals’ side, and it’s related to the general Kansas City-St. Louis rivalry, also more strongly felt on the KC side.
They jack up the prices not to rip off Royals fans, but to rip off Cards fans driving cross-state. Quite a few of them show up.

Will and I have limited time to put stuff out.
On the pre and post game threads we keep short to what really stood out. I figure we could put out a bunch of stuff like the general media (KC Star, ESPN, kcroyals.com). With the limited time, we might as well put out something people like and is a little unique.
I like the idea of an interview, but this series was too short in coming. I am looking at 5 questions to ask a person of the other team. Let me know if any you would like to see.
What is the current fan sentiment of the team?
Can you tell us a little about the starters in the series?
What would team’s greatest weakness/need?

Is there anyone your team is interested in trading,
or any Royals player your team is interested in acquiring?
Are there any young players in the pipeline we might see in the majors within a couple of years?
What makes you most optimistic about your team, and what makes you most pessimistic?
What do you think about the Royals? How do the Royals match up with your team?
What are some of your fansite’s inside jokes? Who do you laugh at? What do you make fun of?

They do the same for Boston and NY games.
Probably more so with Boston because of how many Boston fans attend, and more with NY because they’re the Yankees.

who is embarrased that the royals (and some fans) keep bringing up 1985…enough about it already, i’d rather talk about nothing then to keep bringing up ancient history, especially since they’ve won a WS since then.

I feel the same way.
I’ve written about this several times both here and on Twitter, but it seems as if the Royals organization assume that fans are content to rest on the laurels of 1985, and allow it to compensate for the utter lack of anything since. It appears that, from a promotional point of view, this is at least somewhat effective, because they continue doing it.
I wouldn’t expect this to last forever. Eventually, the fan base will shift to the point where most fans were not around in 1985. You don’t see the Chiefs promoting their 1970 Super Bowl victory, after all.

Another (very minor) touch that might be nice

Since Royal fans
have no class, when we beat your ace tonight, we will sweep you and you will get to enjoy looking at a real major league team, not a AAAA club.
Don't come here and say we have no class.
The fans here haven’t been happy with the Ankiel signing since it happened. We don’t mind fans of other teams coming over here for discussions (just had a nice one with some Nats fans last series).
Instead of saying we have no class, why not ask why there is so much hatred for Ankiel.

What a shame.
I just got done defending Cardinals fans to some other Royals fans on Facebook who were claiming that St. Louis fans were nasty.
