A Fenway Photo Essay or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Bruce Chen
My wife and I flew out to Boston over Memorial Day to visit her brother and see the Royals at Fenway. David, her brother, bought us some really terrific tickets. For example, it was easier to rest my hand on the Royals dugout than my own armrest. This was my second time at Fenway, the prior being some twelve years ago.
My personal photo essay after the jump..
I live in San Francisco now, so I'm familiar with the feeling of excitement and community that a downtown stadium creates. For those of you in locations where people drive 30-45 minutes to go to game, it's way different. The town changes completely for those related few hours. The atmosphere here though was really something special, beyond what I see at home. Very cool..
Here's where we sat. Monster view.
Spotted quite a bit more Royals gear than I anticipated.
Among the things one learns when sitting at field-level: Mitch Maier is huge. Another: Butler, whether on the field, batting, or whatever, looks like a guy shopping for kitchenware during the Final Four. Not excited to be there. In theory, this would usually bother me. With him, it's endearing. Not sure why.
Stretch time. By the way, someone (I couldn't see from my angle) apparently throws Butler a ball every time he comes into the dugout from playing the field. Does everyone already know this?
Youk's batting music was "Just a Friend" by Biz Markie. (Not a joke.)
As you already know, things took a turn for the sour..
Frank!
Zack went no-cap for most of the game.
The devistating conclusion. St. Willie looks back in anger.
Some other folks in Royals gear hollered at us in mid-photo here..
We were also on TV following a Yuni foul in the 7th. (Unfortunate zoom timing.)
Other semi-random shots of the Park..
My amazing wife and brother in law. (Thanks again, Dave!)
See ya Fenway!
All of these shots are courtesy of me, by the way. So I edited out those clunky credit links.

Great pics
Thanks for sharing. For someone that never gets to go to Royals games anymore, it’s great to see those things.

Great photo essay
I NEED one of those “Loyal” shirts!
Whether the Royals win or lose, I can still drink.
Looks like a great time...
I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Fenway a few years back as well. Also, I don’t blame Zack a bit for not wearing those hats.
Oh…and the thing about someone from the Royals dugout throwing Butler a new ball as he comes off the field every inning—it’s pretty much standard practice in baseball (probably all the way down to high school/legion teams). It’s the new baseball the 1B will use to warm up the infielders with before the next inning.

At Vandy, they throw a ball to the CF when he comes in
Probably for the same reason, but who knows.

because he plays catch with the either right field or left field between innings.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Were you able to feel the mentoring power of Jason Kendall simply by sitting near him?
I am in envy. Boston is high on my list of cities I want to visit, and Fenway is the big reason why.

Thanks for sharing those
I would love to go to a game at the fen. Work sent me to Boston on two different trips one April…. both times coinciding with Sox roadtrips.
My grandfather’s brother Walt Kinney was a pitcher and Babe’s roommate on the 1918 team. He didn’t have much of a career, but he had THAT year THERE. I remember we used to go visit him in Escondido when I was little. He was quite the character. Always had lots of ice cream. Aunt Jesse wouldnt let him buy it normally, so when we showed up he would take us all to the store and facilitate our non-agreement on the flavor, buy a gallon of each so he would have plenty of leftovers.
Other “notable” things from his career.
- He was banned from baseball (later reinstated) by Judge Landis for playing games in an independant league (for more money). The next commish, Happy Chandler, it turns out from Mom’s geneology research was a 2nd cousin of his.
- He hit a home run in his last MLB at bat. Not bad for a generally crappy relief pitcher.
Anyway, between that and that 1975 series…. i need to go to that park
~~~if there is one thing i absolutely know for sure its... ummmm uhhh.... uhhh
nevermind
No, he was reinstated by judge Landis.
My mother came accross the family connection to Happy Chandler ( a former senator & gov of Kentucky). I recognized the name as a former baseball commish, and found the irony of being banned by the first commish, and cousin of the next.
I saw you on TV
and I LOVE your shirt!
As to the guy that throws the ball to Billy at the end of every inning…it is commonplace in baseball. The ball goes into his glove, and that is the ball that is thrown around by the infielders during the pitchers warm up tosses when they take the field next. He is given the ball right away so that in case he is on base, or at bat when the final out is recorded, the player that brings him his glove (usually the 2nd baseman) doesn’t have to find a ball, it is right there.
BOOM! ROASTED!
great photos - thanks for sharing them with the blogosphere
Obviously, you’re not a golfer.
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
Nice job.
And add me to the list of those wanting a “Loyals” shirt. I remember a few years back someone was selling them online, & I’ve always regretted not snagging one then.
Thanks for sharing.
We need to have a few more of these types of stories so we can get a feel for other parks! And the way our fans treat them. : )
