Official Pre-Draft rumors/freak out thread
I was going to put this up later but I think the madness has already started. Jim Callis has a new mock up with the Royals taking Chris Sale and that there was never an agreement with Grandal (or that the Grandal stuff was a negotiating tactic with Sale). Also says Michael Choice and Wojciechowski are still options if we want to save money. So we shall see...
Also here is a poll question to debate--who would you take if you could redo the 2007 draft? A few months ago, we all complained about how the Royals didn't take Wieters (at the time of the 2007 draft, I actually wanted Rick Porcello), and I"m curious if folks have changed their minds in light of Wieters' struggles and Moustakas' awesomeness. I didn't include Jason Heyward because I think that's who everyone would take in retrospect.
So debate that question or use this thread to vent your emotions as reports will come out throughout the day linking us to different players.

Had to vote Wieters.
If he’s drafted, Kendall never gets signed. Yes, he’s been decent. Still can’t stand the guy.

I understand all of the numbers arguments against Kendall.
But the fan in my love’s watching him play. I like that he plays everyday. I like that he doesn’t wearing batting gloves. I like that he chokes up on the bat and tries to hit singles. I know none of those things help the Royals win baseball games, but the fan in me overrides my judgment with him.
he has been a decent to suprising this year
I did not think it would be possible for him to be hitting above .300 in June

Jason Heyward!
I took him in the shadow draft that year (although mostly because I thought Wieters and Porcello would be out of the Royals price range). I think I actually liked Josh Vitters more than Moose. Moose was kind of a late riser that year.

Knowing what we know now, I think I would still take Wieters, though.

the Braves pulled all sorts of stuff to hide him from other teams — Didn’t update his bio/stats in whatever database the teams share, wouldn’t send any important scouts to go look at him, etc.

A lot of scouts thought
He was too passive at the plate, and the fact he was not getting challenged by pitchers much (cause he was so freaking awesome) made a lot of people wonder if he was any good at all since they never really got to see him hit.

It’s got a TON of information.

So is it a conspiracy theory that we are going to draft Grandal?
I could see that being leaked to the media to put pressure on Pomeraz or Sale or Mystery Man to make them decide that we will go a different direction IF they do not agree to our offer….
But at the same time…. I’d be okay with Grandal. I do NOT want Choice. He seems like a classic overdraft with big K problems. If we aren’t sure, take Colon. He’ll stick at SS for the future and he’ll hit. Just not super speed…

I've heard (from Jim Callis of BA, I think) that it could be to get to Sale
And try to get him signed for less and signed faster. I think that’s more of a conspiracy theory than drafting Grandal, though.

Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
I'm thinking more and more Porcello's like a glorified Colt Griffin
Not a great comparison, actually, as Porcello doesn’t strikes many batters but limits his walks, and Griffin had a pretty good k/9 but walked everybody. But from a pure hype perspective, the two aren’t too far off — high school pitchers who may never amount to anything.
Porcello was promoted to the major league after only season in the minors, and the fact was it wasn’t even really that great of a season in the minors. Unsurprisingly, he hasn’t pitched very well in the majors. In fact, his numbers suggest (and I made this comparison elsewhere) he’s Jimmy Gobble. Look at their age 19 year in A+ and their almost identical. (That’s not a good thing.)
batter nine you sucky
Wait...we're already calling Porcello a pitcher who may not amount to anything??
Oh come on…we’re smarter than that right? Comparisons to Colt Griffin?? Porcells is 21 years old, already with one decent year in the bigs. No, he may never be an ace..but there’s a HUGE chance that he is a decent starting pitcher for quite a few seasons. Come on…….
Killing time until time kills me
I think upside is Jon Garland
Downside is Miguel Asencio. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but there’s a very, very short list of pitcher aged 21 and younger who have managed to parlay a sub 5.00 k/9 into any sort of meaningful career. I just finished looking at the list of pitchers who played in the ML from 1990 – 2010 as either a 20 or 21 year old, and Porcello’s strikeout rate was among the bottom 10% of those guys.
That’s not too surprising, considering he’s also been among the 10 worst in K/9 both in 2009 and 2010. He might turn into something decent, but I think it’s more likely he’ll be a mediocre pitcher. The comparison to Colt was mainly based on hype — he’s already a much better pitcher than Colt. I just don’t know that he’ll be much better than he is now.
batter nine you sucky
I agree that he may not live up the hype
I just think saying he may never amount to anything is going too far, because he already appears to be a back-end quality starting pitcher with some potential to improve, perhaps. Him being a back-end pitcher would definitely be disappointing, given the hype, but it still could’ve turned out a whole lot worse.
Killing time until time kills me
He is basically Jon Garland already
I am not a Porcello guy by any means, but you are selling his upside a bit short. He is young enough to show some improvement in command or to sharpen his slider or curve into an effective pitch. With just minimal improvement, he could be pre-TJ Jake Westbrook. If he can add a strikeout per nine inning and maintain a 2.0 K rate and high groundball rate, he moves into the lower territory of the Lowe and Hudson type of pitchers — 5.5 to 6.0 K/9, 2.5 to 3.0 BB/9, 55% GB rate (in other words, not Lowe and Hudson in their peak or career years, but more toward their average years). Personally, I think Porcello falls short of that, largely due to how the Sox have handled him, but he still has a non-nominal chance of doing so.
whoops, it should be
“If he can add a strikeout per nine inning and maintain a 2.0 K/BB rate and high groundball rate . . . .”
but the part about him being on the "Sox" is just fine

If we don't take Grandal
and go cheap to sign more difficult picks later than I would be happy with Choice. Read a good article about him in BA. Lots of power, good batting eye. It’s not so much I really really like him its just that the other option aren’t better. Sale is said to have a ceiling as a closer. Pomeranz an upside of a 3rd starter. Also just read in KC Star they are taking this draft as a “need based draft.”
If we are going by need we'll be taking Colon or Yordy Cabrera...
Or another HS option.

We don't have a dynamic play maker out there.
We need one of our guys to become that. A CFer who is fast, runs down everything, hits for power, average, and is freaking fast.
Derrick Robinson. Jarrod Dyson. David Lough… someone needs to get to that point. But we at least have athletes in the system who are working on it.
Our biggest playmaker right now is… ahem…. willie bloomquist… cough.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.

2B?
Chase Utley and… um… I guess Pedroia and Kinsler, very good players (although neither can hold Utley’s jock)… Brian Roberts is overrated and Robinson Cano isn’t what I would call “dynamic.”
2Bs tend to be underrated, but I don’t’ think it’s a typically manned by “dynamic” players as often as SS and CF.

I think we're closer than Pittsburgh.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.
Thats what I was thinking too
Their prospects are really kinda spread out and if they take a high schooler this year he won’t get there until McCutchen has been traded off in the next rebuild. Alvarez is NOT hitting well in AAA and is going to have to move to first.
Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.
Keep in mind, though, that KC's "rebuilding" had a big head start on Pittsburgh
Moore was hired a month into the 2006 season, while Huntington was not hired until before the 2008 season, so Moore’s regime had a 1 1/2 head start. Huntington has had only two drafts and done well with Alvarez and Sanchez (a bit of a reach at no. 4 but the Pirates used the savings to go well over slot in later rounds to buy out college commitments). Huntington has done a good job of trading the veterans making too much money to restock the farm system quickly and given chances to young freely available talent. Almost all the players on their 40-man roster are under 30. The Pirates need to focus on adding young pitching talent, but have decent prospects or young players at most offensive positions.
The Pirates are not necessarily closer to competition than the Royals, but Huntington closed the gap rather quickly. At the same stage in Moore’s tenure, Moore was signing Jose Guillen to a 3-year deal and playing Ross Gload every day.
So you're saying Omar and Dayton didn't invite Neil to the Contest?

I can see some similarities
huntington made all those trades last year, which was sorta like Dayton did… at the beginning
it’s easier to trade someone else’s guys… so we’ll have to see where the pirates go from here
I'll give you the Octavio Dotel signing
There are three stark differences. First, Huntington has traded starting players and even some star players such as Bay, McLouth, Nady, Bautista, LaRoche, Snell, Wilson, and Sanchez. Moore traded basically traded one rent-a-player in Dotel and a bunch of spare parts.
Second, virtually all of Huntington’s trades made the Pirates younger, by quite a bit. Many of Moore’s deals were prospects for prospects, or young players for young players, and many of the trades were for veterans such as Perez, Gload, Jacobs, and Crisp.
Third, Huntington has avoided signing veterans to big money multi-year deals — no Guillen, no Meche, no Farnsworth, no Kendall. He signed his own Willie Bloomquist in Ramon Vazquez, but then had the good sense to cut ties when it was not working out. As a result, the Pirates have only $13 million in guaranteed money for 2011, while the Royals have $41 million.
let's just trust the process
I think Dayton’s lost years of 2007-09 are going to end up hurting the royals for a long time
fanhouse Grandal update
http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/06/05/draft-buzz-top-15-clearing-up/
UPDATE (6/7 – 11:48 AM) – We continue to get more information on the Yasmani Grandal situation. Word from industry sources is that while there was originally an agreement in place, the Grandal camp now believes they can get more money from another top 10 team. That team? The Cleveland Indians. Sources say that Kansas City offered $2.9 million and Cleveland has topped that offer. It’s still the belief, however, that Kansas City will take Grandal, but that original agreement seems to be on shaky ground now that a better offer has been made.

Here's KLaw's writeup
“He’s nominally a switch-hitter, but his left-handed swing is superior to his right-handed swing, something that has shown up in his splits this year. From the left side, he doesn’t stride in BP and his front side is very rigid, but he did step forward in games and had a more consistent weight transfer. He has good hip rotation and excellent follow-through, with a swing path that should produce above-average power. From the right side, he lacks the same bat speed and his swing is more linear, with a weak finish where he turns his wrists over and flattens the swing out.” From his Insider report on Grandal.

I voted
Wieters. Getting offense at a premium defensive position is a huge competitive advantage (and if I was running the team I would be drafting on that philosophy). See Twins, Minnesota. I like Moustakos, but he is still in AA.
I don’t think Grandal is Joe Mauer, but I still think we should take him.
I voted Moose Tacos...
But I almost picked Wieters, because that guy is already a Stud defensively at Catcher.

I really like what Moose is doing
but I’d probably have to go Wieters for now. If Wieters continues to struggle and Moose continues to dominate, I’d have to change. Kinda surprised Moose is running so far ahead.
well, one month of awesomeness could be a fluke

Sounds like Pittsburgh is going to take Taillon after all
And Baltimore will take Machado, of course. Still at a point where no one is sure what to think of the Royals.

hope that is just negotiating tactic
I really want Grandal. Not a fan of Sale, I suspect he didn’t face very good competition this year. I don’t think Grandal would be any higher than #5 in our system, but I think he slots in nicely with the bubble of talent that is rising through the system. The royals could be fun to watch in a couple of years, even if they aren’t winning all that many games with the young’uns.
Sale was the #1 prospect in the Cape Cod Lg this summer
and also pitched well against
Wichita St 6 IP 11 K 5 H 2 ER 1 BB
Clemson 8 IP 4 H 2 ER 10 K 2 BB
the only well known names he faced. He dominated everyone he faced in his league that’s all he can do.

I know it's not his fault
it’s just not enough for me to take him over Grandal at #4
Rany and Law (on Twitter) have the right idea
if they like Grandal (I don’t know, just assuming they think he’s the better player), draft him and offer him what you want. If he says “no,” good luck in 2011’s stack draft, kid! We’ll not only have a high draft pick from our crappy 2011 team, but we’ll also have the #5 pick as compensation.
I am concerned that Grandal will insist he be allowed to start in CF, though.

KLaw just said in his chat that the Royals will take Sale at #4

Am I wrong or are the Royals prepping to take a bullpen guy at #4 overall?
Klaw
(3:07 PM)
That is my feeling, yes. I do know several teams that would not consider him in round one, and I know Oakland would strongly consider him at 10.
Hmmmm
I also wonder why you would use your first round pick for a LOOGY?
presuming we had a manager who knew how to use one?
"Things could always be worse." - Buddy Bell
not too many LOOGYs have a solid change up and fastball
I guess Sale is nothing more than the next Jimmy Gobble, he’ll touch 95-97 out of the pen like Gobble did
Checkout Royals minor league notes at www.14for77.blogspot.com
well, didn't the original write-up about him
describe him as a situational lefty?
"Things could always be worse." - Buddy Bell
Laws write up
there are plenty who think he is more than that. Relievers typically don’t have a solid change up.
I see a lefty with a + fastball + change up who could develop a off speed pitch. If anything the lack of use of an offspeed pitch during college lessens the wear on his arm and injury risk IMO.

To be fair
This is what KLaw said about Lincecum in 2006: “Lincecum will almost certainly end up a reliever in the pros. And given the Giants’ motivation to win now, I expect Lincecum to go right to AA, work out of the pen and show up in the majors later this year.”

I know
It’s the “several teams don’t consider him a first rounder” that raises my eyebrow a little more.
Yes, this is true.
All of the rankings of top talents except KLaw’s show Sale in the top ten or twenty, though, so the scouts must be seeing something that everyone else isn’t.

At this point
I’m convinced that the main criterion for becoming a scout is eliminating your name. They all become letters like in Men in Black.

Wouldn't it be cool if MLB teams weren't responsible for developing their own talent?
If they could be like the NFL and NBA and draft league ready talent, this would all be so much more interesting. I’d propose independent developmental leagues that they drafted from and each team only had a single AAA-level affiliate.
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
That could be the answer to the world draft...

It sounds crazy, but I’ve actually been told my breaking the news might be impacting the KC/Grandal situation. I find it hard to believe because I don’t think I am overly important in the scheme of things, but apparently going public might have given Grandal’s camp more leverage.

The problem with Porcello, as was obvious at the time, is that he demanded a major league deal, thus starting his options immediately.

Colon
Colon wouldn’t be a waste pick. Some were even talking about him at #2. And we’re not exactly flush with shortstop prospects. I just hope the Royals aren’t fingering Colon because of the price demands other players. And you have to wonder if Colon will break down, which would just cause a mess in our organization.

the broken leg was a freak incident at 2nd base when a runner came in hard. Colon stole 24 of 26 base stealling attempts that’s effiencent!! KLaw says will stick at SS. Colon is a top table-setter & SS this club needs!!!
