what you don't think we are going to get compensated for Jose?

Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.

by Gantz9 on Jun 7, 2010 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

The option has nothing to do with free agent compensation

Teams only get free agent compensation if they offer arbitration to a qualified player (who then signs elsewhere). Turning down an option has no effect on whether the team gets free agent compensation, as a team can decline an option and still offer the player arbitration.

Of course, as a practical matter, if a team does not like a player enough to pick up the option, it is probably not going to want to risk arbitration with him either.

Where does Colon (and Grandal, for that matter) stack up compared to Seiler's Top 20?

This might have been of use earlier, Seiler’s ratings
http://www.mlbbonusbaby.com/2010/6/1/1496364/seiler-ratings-for-top-100
(first number is for expected-round-drafted, letter is for ceiling, second number is for likelihood the prospect makes it to ML, the higher the better)

But what I wanted to look at is the tiers: of course there’s the first three, then really only Pomeranz and J Sale have the 1B3 ranking. Nine further players have 1B2 rankings, including Colon and Grandal.

1. Bryce Harper, C, CC of Southern Nevada – 1A2
2. Jameson Taillon, RHP, The Woodlands HS (TX) – 1A1
3. Manny Machado, SS, Brito Private HS (FL) – 1B3
4. Drew Pomeranz, LHP, Ole Miss – 1B3
5. Chris Sale, LHP, Florida Gulf Coast – 1B2
6. Josh Sale, OF, Bishop Blanchet HS (WA) – 1B3
7. Deck McGuire, RHP, Georgia Tech – 1B1
8. Yasmani Grandal, C, Miami – 1B2
9. Karsten Whitson, RHP, Chipley HS (FL) – 1B2
10. Christian Colon, SS, Cal State Fullerton – 1B2
11. Nick Castellanos, 3B, Archbishop McCarthy HS (FL) – 1B2
12. Zack Cox, 3B, Arkansas – 1B2
13. Dylan Covey, RHP, Maranatha HS (CA) – 1B1
14. Stetson Allie, RHP, St. Edward HS (OH) – 1A1
15. Alex Wimmers, RHP, Ohio State – 1B2
16. Michael Choice, OF, UT Arlington – 1B2
17. Matt Harvey, RHP, North Carolina – 1B1
18. Kaleb Cowart, RHP/3B, Cook County HS (GA) – 1B1
19. Brandon Workman, RHP, Texas – 1B2
20. Justin O’Conner, C/SS, Cowan HS (IN) – 1B1

Great pick

He will be one of the first from this class to debut. Moore has to know he needs to show results or he’ll be out of a job. This pick will give results. He could be in KC by Sept 2012.

Start him in Wilmington late this year and in AA next year. 2012 start him in Omaha and watch him make it to the show

by GobbleforCyoung on Jun 7, 2010 9:12 PM EDT reply actions

Don't know whether Colon was loved or hated by the RR crowd

But I have moved from ambivalent to really liking the pick. Its a weak draft, better to go with a safe pick, a guy that can give you Orlando Cabrera-esque production, maybe even more power than that if you’re lucky. Should be a solid starter at SS for years.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Jun 7, 2010 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

Ya but I think his ceiling could be higher than that...

I would say his middle or floor is Cabrera. G Shauam says Jeteresque.

I buy the comp bc...

Captin of the college USA team, led them in homers, RBIs, 24/26 on the base paths, natural leader, luvs the game.

by PREGNANT ROLLERSKATE on Jun 7, 2010 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone likes to use the Jeter comp

Mainly because they undervalue Jeter. Don’t get me wrong (I hate him)- if he weren’t on the Yankees, he wouldn’t be DEREK JETER. But his biggest career comps are Barry Larkin, Robbie Alomar, Alan Trammel, and Ryne Sandberg. Everyone who uses him as a comp thinks he’s closer to, I dunno, Placido Polanco and is only Derek Jeter because he’s in NYC.

by sterlingice on Jun 7, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

but Jeter does have unmeasurable Leadership and stability.

by PREGNANT ROLLERSKATE on Jun 7, 2010 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Cabrera is his more likely comp

I think his upside is Tulowitzki, but the odds of him reaching that are awfully low.

Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Jun 7, 2010 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I never thought of Tulo

"You'll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes."

by MinnesotaRoyal on Jun 7, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I get the Cabrera comp Defensively, but

Offensively he is much more than Cabrera. Cincy has Cabrera batt leadoff out of need not bc he is ideal. I believe he is more of a Jeter type leadoff hitter.

by PREGNANT ROLLERSKATE on Jun 7, 2010 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Tulo is a middle of the order bat...

Colon is not! Colon is a 1 or 2 that can bat 3, but prefer as a table-setter.

by PREGNANT ROLLERSKATE on Jun 7, 2010 9:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I would definitely agree with that

I think he has a shot to move up quickly and he has been rated as a 6-batter or so, which would be solid with Moose, Hos, and Myers coming up.

Colon reminds me of Grant Green, which is appropriate since they were high school teammates and since I took Green last year.

Colon has the same appeal as Grandal. He can hit and play an up the middle position. There’s value there, even if his ceiling is good starter rather than all star.

4. KANSAS CITY ROYALS
The Pick: Christian Colon, SS, Cal State Fullerton
The Buzz: The Royals go with a very talented shortstop that can do it all. The organization is in need of talent and this was the most talented position player on the board. They stole him from the infield-poor Indians who pick No. 5. Signability is an issue here though.

Dayton always gets his first rounders signed and we’re not stingy in the draft. And even if he passes (unlikely since I can’t see his stock improving), we get a #5 overall pick next year. Win.

I’d be down for either of them if they get past the supplementals. Any others you would want?

I like Gibbs a lot. Peter Tago, Stetson Allie, and Tajuan Walker are intriguing prep arms. And I think Bryce Brentz has some red flags, but you can’t pass on him in the second round.

I don't know Walker at all

Any info or links on him?

Got snatched up by Jack Z in Seattle

Throws 94 – can gear it up to 98. Great movement. Not much in secondary pitches. A bit raw at this point but I love his frame and he kinda whips the ball like Pedro did. A bit of a project but good upside.

Keep forgetting about him

Haven’t heard much lately, though, which suggests he might be going to Stanford. Especially since he didn’t get picked in the first round.

Yeah, I thought he'd be gone by now

That would be a decent grab.

Very good pick

Moore actually did what I would have the past two years. Draft the two closest to the Majors. They were both juniors in college I think and project to be MLB ready by 2012

Everyone has a chance to make it to KC by 2012. There won’t be too many petty arguments and this board will be much more positive once Moose, Gordon, Kila, Colon, Montgomery, Lamb become KC regulars in 2012 when we still have Greinke, Soria and Dejesus

by GobbleforCyoung on Jun 7, 2010 10:11 PM EDT reply actions

Why not

If he starts in Arkansas this year he can make it to AAA by 2012 and get a promotion to KC

You don’t think Pedro Alverez will get the call this year? He was drafted exactly 2 years ago. College hitters can make it quick. Look at Gordon Beckam who was also draft that year. Ike Davis was drafted in 2008 too. There are alot of instances

BTW

I watched a Ball State game a couple of months ago. Vitek’s swing looks good and he looks athletic. He didn’t have much to do in that game on defense so it was hard to judge that aspect of his game.

Perci Garner was very interesting. You could tell how very raw he was, but you could also see him LEARNING and trying out stuff. You could see him tinkering with the curveball. Fastball was very consistently 92 with some 94’s and a couple of 95’s.

Ranaudo is falling this far?

He was top 3 last year for college players. He must have sucked this year

I would take him at 54, in case Crow completely busts

by GobbleforCyoung on Jun 7, 2010 10:25 PM EDT reply actions

I can't complain

The last time the Royals had a sandwich round pick, it turned out to be Montgomery. If I remember correctly, the time before that it was Billy Buckner, who was turned into Callaspo.

I’ll take that

(C’mon, guys! Lets help the Red Sox, Tigers, and Angels stock up! They need it!)

So, who’s on your board for tomorrow?
And who do you think the Royals will go with? (Is there’s a toolsy no-hit CF out there somewhere?)

I'm cool with that

I’d want some discussions with Wilson first. If we’re even in the ballpark, take him…even if he bolts to Stanford you get an extra pick next year.

Brandon Workman

Did he get drafted yet? I had him pegged for 15-20. I think he has some great movement, an excellent curve, and has really developed command. Seems like a nice polished collegiate arm and I’m surprised if he hasn’t been picked.

Yordy Cabrera is another one I'm surprised is still on the board

Teams are scared off by his age I guess? His power is off the charts. He’ll probably be a .240-.260 hitter, but if he hits 30 home runs, who cares?
