    I know nothing about baseball prospects, so I guess I’m fine with the pick. GMDM has done a decent job drafting with the Royals, no reason to not give CBJ a chance.

    Anyone know if Rob Aviles is related to Mike?

    He’s from New York, too, and hasn’t been picked yet. I just kept hearing the name and didn’t know anything about him.

    Great pick

    Only potential problems I see from the scouting reports are the belief his power is not legit/will not stay (sound?) and a potential he might end up at 2B.

    If one of those things happens, it will still be a good pick. If both happen it’s a bad pick. If neither happen it’s an outstanding pick.

    Today is more important though. We need to add 3-4 more high-ceiling top 200 type of guys. I’m hoping for A.J. Cole with our 4th pick.

    I don't remember a SS drafted

    That didn’t have that “if he can stay at SS” tag. Grant Green had it last year. It just comes with being a SS. From what I’ve read (presumably the same material everyone else has read), he has a great chance to stick at SS

    Right now they do

    Just like taking Colon as a pick that will likely be ready for KC sooner than later, they will probably make picks that have a shorter projected time in the minors. How that works out this time, I don’t know, but Crow is going to have to really turn it around for that to have worked out last year.

    This looks like a classic Royals pick

    With Hochevar and Crow…. why not Paxton?

    James Paxton | LHP | Independent Baseball League
    A native Canadian and a Scott Boras client, Paxton failed to sign with the Blue Jays as the 37th overall pick of the ‘09 draft. The lefty then lost his college eligibility and failed to pitch during what would have been his senior year of college. Paxton did throw a few innings in an independent baseball league prior to the draft in an effort to boost his draft stock. When he’s sharp, he has a mid-to-high-90s fastball, a plus curveball and a raw change-up. (Marc Hulet)

    Just read that KLaw's perception

    is that there’s a pre-draft deal in place with Colon. Some scouts are saying we could see Colon by next year, which I find a little crazy, but if there’s a deal in place and he starts at Wilmington, it’s possible that he makes it for a call-up next year. I think it’s all a little crazy and they think he’ll move way faster than he will, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

    but I generally can’t stand it when people deliberately try to be contrary, which he can be wont to do at times…I can see his point I guess, but in this case I think he’s trying to be difficult…in general, any Boras pick is not a signability pick…part of managing the minor leagues is filling holes, and in this case, the consensus is that there weren’t any clear picks after the first 3.

    what Baird was doing on a shoestring budget (and with a lack of competence) is far, far different from what Moore has done with the minor leagues (yes, with a much higher budget, but that’s not the point).

    Sounds like a 180 on the position...

    For his first two-plus years Moore was happy to sacrifice SS offense for a good glove (see TPJ) but this guy’s strength is his bat and his ability defensively to play above his tools. Outside the box thinking for this group. It’s amazing how much slack I’m willing to give the front office after 2-plus months of spectacular minor league results. I think Moore’s learning oon the job. And the only criticism that still sticks is his faith in post-“peak” vets which is a flaw he shares with 90% of GMs.

    by billexgordler on Jun 8, 2010 12:10 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

    He's definetely getting better.

    I’m one of those guys that’s always been Pro-GMDM. He’ll do much better. He knows that he has to try to put some competitive guys on the field, so he reaches for vets who fit our bill… taking money and not being very good. But someone has to sign them or you lose 130 games.

    Back to the process please

    I know GMDM is feeling the heat to produce at the MLB level, but if there’s a repeat of last year’s focus on college players in the early rounds today, he’s gonna produce a big void in the system. We need players for the generation after the next generation, too; I fear for the quality of the rookie league teams if they don’t get more than one or two real prospects this year. If building with higher upside HS talent was the process in 2007, it still needs to be the process now to have a system that is always producing MLB talent.

    It's all ball bearings these days!

    Brett Eibner – P
    Arkansas, Jr.

        * Birthdate: 12/2/1988
        * Height: 6’4"
        * Weight: 210 lbs.
        * Bats: Right
        * Throws: Right
        * Scout’s report filed: 2/21/10

    Scouting Report

    Fastball: Eibner reached 94 mph with his fastball and sat comfortably in the 92-93 mph range.

    Fastball movement: It has good late sink.

    Slider: It should be a solid Major League pitch in the future. He threw it 81-84 mph. The pitch had a little curve action, but when he stays on top of it, there’s some bite and tilt.

    Changeup: He only threw a couple of changeups in this outing and they were OK.

    Control: He has average command. He threw strikes, but was up in the zone a little bit.

    Poise: He has good mound presence and competes very well.

    Physical Description: Eibner is a big, strong, athletic (he also plays center field) right-hander.

    Medical Update: Eibner had some elbow tenderness last summer and did not pitch in the autumn as a result. Arkansas is bringing him along slowly, but he seemed completely healthy.

    Strengths: Potential for good three-pitch mix. Good, clean delivery. Tall and athletic.

    Weaknesses: Because he plays the outfield, and likes to do so, his pitching ability is a bit raw.

    Summary: Eibner is a two-way player who has some ability as an outfielder, though most agree his future is on the mound. His time spent hitting has no doubt held back his development as a pitcher, but he still shows the potential to have three pitches he can throw for strikes with smooth mechanics. Once he focuses on pitching, there might be more in the tank and his athleticsm certainly helps him on the mound. He’s an intriguing college starting pitching prospect with upside — and if he continues performing like he did at the start of the season, he will rush up Draft boards.

    Why do I have this feeling about two-way players

    That they can’t possibly be good enough to be major league caliber at both hitting AND pitching, and are therefore not great at either?

    This is a completely irrational feeling, someone tell me Eibner is a stud at one or the other. Or that he’s the second coming of Kordell Stewart or something…

    Is that everyone is like the Rays have had the best draft so far… well, they’ve had 2 first round picks and a comp pick. They took the guys that fell. If they would have had one pick, would it still have been a “great” draft and the best so far? no way.

    Mike Antonio Position: SS School: George Washington HS State: NY Height: 6’2’’ Weight: 180
    Bats: R Throws: R Birth Date: 10/26/91 Seiler Rating: 2C1 Commitment: St. John’s
    Mike Antonio is a solidly-built infielder from the Bronx. Just in case you don’t know this already, that’s
    where a team called the Yankees play. Oh, and the school that Antonio attends put out some guy named
    Manny Ramirez. Getting back to Antonio, he easily rates as the best New York City prospect in this draft
    class. At the plate, he is still developing what his style of execution is going to be. At the moment, his
    body is more that of a leadoff hitter’s, and he has average to above-average speed, so he could fit in
    that mold if he wanted to. However, he still has good projection, and if he adds enough strength, he
    could conceivably turn into a hitter with solid power numbers. How he develops physically will dictate
    that, but the consensus is that he’s probably more of a number two hitter; one with solid athleticism,
    but not enough speed to leadoff and not enough pop to bat in the middle third. Defensively, he has solid
    actions and should be an average shortstop if he doesn’t fill out too much and lose range. He has an
    average arm, and could move to third base if needed, though second base is probably the better option
    for him both offensively and defensively- but he could get too big for that spot, too. He should be
    signable in the top seven rounds, and I project him as a third to fifth round prospect and a solid sign.

    The best prep baseball prospect in New York City will be up early Sunday. He’ll get dressed in front of the Sammy Sosa poster on his bedroom wall, and have a bowl of corn flakes in the family apartment on W. 161st St. Then he will make his way to a pre-draft workout at Citi Field, where he’ll hit and throw and run, and see if he can find a way, finally, to relax, and let his talent shine.

    It sounds easy. But it isn’t. Trust Mike Antonio on that. He’s a 6-2, 180-pound senior, the star shortstop of George Washington High School and the latest in a decades-long line of Dominican talent that has come out of Washington Heights, and coach Steve Mandl’s program.

    Major-league scouts rave about his foot speed (he’s clocked as fast as 6.6 in the 60-yard dash) and bat speed, and the way he projects as a power hitter; in George Washington’s PSAL playoff rout of Port Richmond last week, Antonio smacked a line drive some 410 feet, over the center-field fence.

    His only real weakness at the moment may be that he cares too much, and tries too hard.

    I get school rivalries

    but getting left out of a BCS conference is so far above and beyond losing on the field of play that it’s not even funny. It’s like wishing death on someone. Just not cool. If KSU ends up in the Mountain West or any other minor conference that’s just an absolute death sentence for sports for the school and would affect enrollment and academics too.

    by sfeldkamp on Jun 8, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

    i agree that it's a serious matter

    but when it comes to teasing rivals, pain is funny. And I hope all Big 12 members land on their feet (if this SUPPOSED change actually happens), including KU, KSU, and Mizzou.

    Iowa State seems like they’re destined to be left out in the cold, too :(

    by sterlingice on Jun 8, 2010 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

    Mizzou

    could come out of this GOLDEN in the Big 10. The Big12 schools right now that aren’t linked with invites to other BCS conferences are KU, KSU, ISU, and Baylor.

    by sfeldkamp on Jun 8, 2010 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

    Tho it would be only right if Mizzou and Nebraska were left out

    As they’re the ones flirting with other conferences to screw up what we have here

    time for people to imagine slotting actually doing jackshit with the draft other than making it worse for the small teams

    I honestly don't think it would make a difference

    It is Royals myth that they are alone in spending over slot. The Red Sox are kings at it, the Yanks do it, lots of smaller teams do it.

    from an ESPN article on MiAnt
    Ironically, it was Antonio’s passion to be great that was his biggest obstacle on his path to stardom. He treated every game like it was a World Series showdown and every at-bat as if his baseball life depended on it.
    If he made an error in the field, it would affect the rest of his at-bats. If he struck out in a key spot, he’d probably make an error the next inning. And if he went 0-for-4, he’d go home and cry.
    The only people he’d talk to were his parents and Mandl. His mom would reassure him, telling him he was still a great player and that even Alex Rodriguez goes 0-for-4 sometimes. Mandl and Antonio would talk almost every night, with the coach repeating a phrase that has become Antonio’s mantra: Control what you can control.
    "He helped me mature a lot," Antonio says. "He’d tell me that if I was planning on playing baseball at the next level, I had to learn to put that stuff aside. The biggest thing in baseball is, there’s always another inning, there’s always another at-bat, there’s always another game."
    Antonio finally learned that lesson in the summer heading into his junior year. He had just won a city championship with George Washington and expected the success to continue at summer showcases. But at one point, he found himself in an 0-for-12 slump. Having tried everything else, he decided not to stress about it. The next day, he went 3-for-4 with three doubles and his breakout summer was on.

    Chapman was taken in the 42nd round by the Detroit Tigers out of high school. He was a Louisville Slugger 1st team all American going 8-2 with a .89 e.r.a for Westminster academy with 140 k’s in 93 ip. But, he has never been able to escape the injury bug having some issues in high school he entered his freshman season as a potential SP. His first year in Gainesville he showed flashes of future stardom going 2-1 with a 4.23 e.r.a with 27 k’s, 22 bb’s in 38 IP (19 G, 6 GS). However, he missed his entire sophomore season as a medical redshirt after under going Tommy John Surgery. He was used cautiously as a junior appearing in just 11 games with 5 k’s, 6 walks and a 1-0 record with a 2.38 e.r.a.

    The 22 year old has been the Gators closer this year and plenty of scouts have stuck around to see his arm in action. He simply throws gas with a 94-95 MPH fastball that has significant break (breaks left to right about 8 inches) He has a change and a curve but his fastball is thrown 98% of the time.He told the Independent Florida Alligator "Until they start hitting my fastball, I don’t think there’s any point in throwing a different pitch," He has the perfect pitchers body and should be a guy that can get to the big leagues quickly. He has a 3-0 record with a microscopic 1.14 e.r.a in one of the best conferences in the land. He also has 40 k’s with 7 walks in 39 ip. Batters are hitting just .169 against him

    92-94 mph fastball and a dastardly slider. Some scouts see him as a starter others see a dominant closer. 6th best lhp in draft according to BA.
