I don't know any of these kids
but I am sure that I will have a strong opinion about them in about five minutes
If Dayton is reading
I went undrafted in ’90, and am available to plug any any system gaps after this draft.
Eibner = AnKiel
The right-hander has a lot to offer, both as a hitter and as a pitcher….
However, his strikeout rate is outrageously high. He strikes out almost 29 pecent of the time over his three-year college career

but what do they do with a guy who wants to be a hitter
just drop the ultimatum? let him struggle for a season as a hitter then make him switch?

You could do what the Red Sox did with Casey Kelly
let him pitch when he hits his pitch count let him hit. Hopefully he’ll get it that he can’t do one..

also this
http://projectprospect.com/article/2010/03/10/ranking-the-razorbacks-10-draft-prospects
While Eibner is an outstanding athlete who plays a fine center field, he didn’t impress me much as the plate. Yes, he does have outstanding bat speed and some raw power, but there’s more to hitting than that. Eibner seemed happy to offer at any pitch in the strike zone. He’d take a hack at the first strike he saw, rarely in a good position to drive the ball.

also, also
he is a Winner, in that he has won
Along with Kyle Drabek (Toronto Blue Jays) and Taylor Grote (New York Yankees), Eibner played a significant role in leading The Woodlands to the 2006 Texas 5A State Championship and a No. 1 overall ranking in USA Today’s Super 25.

From KLaw chat:
Matt (Kansas City, MO)
Christian Colon was a pleasent surprise – there seems to be buzz that he’ll sign fairly quickly, despite being a Boras client. Is that your impression or is he an August 15th sign?

Boras isn't an idiot
I’m sure he knows the talent level of Colon and the expectations of next years draft. I doubt if he draws this one out much. Also the Royals have a good relationship with Boras so there could be an understanding of figures already.

Not surprising
I thought we’d have to give him the shot or we wouldn’t have drafted him this early because forcing him to P might have created a signability question.
I'm actually cool with that
Take him to instructional league, tell him what the strike zone and see what happens. He can clearly hit if he learns a little patience.
I want him in Seitzer's hands
forget patience, i want ground balls

Brett Eibner interview from before the 2010 season
http://www.examiner.com/x-2910-Houston-Astros-Examiner~y2010m1d6-QA-with-Razorbacks-Brett-Eibner
Q: Why did you turn down signing with the Astros as a fourth-round pick out of high school in favor of attending Arkansas?
A: I wanted to play pro ball, but the Astros drafted me only as a pitcher and not an outfielder. At the time, I wasn’t ready to commit to being just a pitcher…I wanted to keep developing my hitting and outfield skills. I expected a little better signing bonus, but that wasn’t the main thing.
I’m glad I chose to go to Arkansas. It’s made me a better ballplayer. I’ve gained more experience, especially playing in front of large crowds, and I’m more mature and humble. When I get drafted next time, I’ll be more prepared to succeed.

http://simmonsfield.blogspot.com/2009/10/2010-recruit-jason-adam-rhp3b.html
Right-hander Jason Adam (Blue Valley NW HS, Overland Park, Kan.) showed promise to go with his power 6-4, 225 frame. His fastball reached 90 and 91 and he pitched at 89-91 with a curveball at 74. He jammed Wilson (Harvard-Westlake, North Hollywood, Calif.) in the first inning, though Wilson was strong enough to get the ball to the warning track

Jason Adam
RHP | Blue Valley High School, Overland, Kan.
Weight: 225 lbs.
Height: 6-4
Summary :
He’s got a big workhorse build but doesn’t take full advantage of his height with a slot just under ¾. Adam will throw four pitches but none is advanced; he gets a little sink on his 88-92 mph fastball and throws a hard-breaking curve (possibly a spike) that he doesn’t command. He drifts off the rubber before he starts his stride, so it takes him a while to build up some forward momentum towards the plate.
His arm is loose, but he doesn’t repeat his arm action well and can get under the ball, especially his curve, which may just be the poor body control of a big teenaged pitcher.
Adam reportedly comes from fortunate circumstances and is expected to insist on a bonus well above slot for where he’s likely to be taken. He’s committed to Missouri.

I think this is a weaker draft and the Royals are being conservative
I can’t really blame them the Colon and Chapman picks are nice picks that could help sooner than later even if their upside is limited while Antonio and Adam have some upside. The key could be getting Eibner out of the batters box and on the mound fulltime.

GW righthander Eric Cantrell has a below-average fastball (86-89, touches 92) that belies his 6-foot-4, 230-pound frame, but commands four pitches. His changeup is considered his best pitch. Cantrell had success last summer pitching for league champion Bourne in the Cape Cod League, then followed up with a solid junior year as GW’s Friday starter, walking just 27 while striking out 114 in 101 innings.

a really good pitcher that didn’t get selected in the first round b/c he wants to be a hitter. and if he can’t be talked out of that, at least he has power as a tool, which can’t be said for most prospects.

Whit Merrifield is a versatile college outfielder from the University of South Carolina. Merrifield
originally came to South Carolina from Davie County High School in Mocksville, North Carolina, a small
town near Winston-Salem. He was a solid high school prospect, but he didn’t flash enough tools to be a
pro prospect, going undrafted and heading to Columbia. He started immediately for the Gamecocks,
first in center field, then settling in to right field this year. He’s played a good amount of infield, too, and
after three years of solid production, he’s expected to become a potential super utility player, playing
second base and the outfield spots. At the plate, he’s an average hitter with fringe-average raw power.
He’s been very productive with a metal bat, but he needs to cut a few holes in his swing to become a
productive Major League hitter. He’s an above-average runner, too, which means he fits the traditional
mold of utility players. Defensively, he’s shown above-average defense in right field, but with an average
arm, and he fits as a potential solid-average defender at second base and around the field. He’s not the
most toolsy prospect available in this year’s draft, but with a solid college record, he’s expected to be a
fairly successful pro that shouldn’t need much time in the low minors. He’s expected to go in the sixth to
tenth round range, where he should sign fairly quickly for average money.

Whit Merrifield is a throwback player. He is a great student of the game whose dad was the SS at Wake Forest in the mid 80’s. He does all of the little things well (bunts, solid defense, runs well, hits behind runners) The RH hitter has very good opposite field power and is as good of a drag bunter as you will see in the college game. He is the starting RF in 2010 but served as the team’s CF his first two years. He can also handle the hot corner and 2B and will play solid defense at either of those positions.
He reminds me a little bit of Mark DeRosa who has established himself as one of the most versatile players in the game and a guy that most any manager would want on his club. I believe Whit can be that type of player.
He started from day one at the USC campus hitting .326 in 236 at bats with 3 home runs 27 k’s, 24 walks and 11 stolen bases as a freshman. His sophomore season he hit .340 in 268 at bats with 11 Hr, 49 rbi, 36 k’s 23 walks, and 15 stolen bases. He has also spent the last 2 seasons in the wood bat Cape Cod league playing for Yarmouth and than Chatham hitting .222 and .266 in his 2 summers on the East Coast. This season he is batting .346 in 130 at bats with 6 home runs, 14 k’s 15 walks

Tim Ferguson is a defensively talented outfielder from the University of Mississippi. Ferguson is
originally from West Brook High School in Beaumont, Texas. He went relatively unknown out of high
school, and he landed at Ole Miss due to not being recruited by any large programs in the state. He
became a starting shortstop halfway through his freshman year at Ole Miss, and then he moved to
second as a sophomore. However, it was a move to center field that brought out his best traits this
spring. In terms of tools, he’s not exactly the most blessed, and his experience in a number of positions
makes him a candidate to be a super-utility player with time. At the plate, he’s a fringe-average to
average hitter, and he strikes out too much, making him more of a bottom of the order hitter than
anything near the top. He has below-average raw power, but he’s an above-average runner underway,
and he maximizes that speed with excellent baserunning and a good ability to read pitchers. In the field,
he’s gone from a raw outfielder to an above-average to plus defender in a short time in center field. He
has an average arm, too, so he’s not a defensive liability there despite his lack of experience. He could
be used at any outfield spot or any infield spot with ease, which makes that super-utility player ceiling
reasonable. He should go somewhere between rounds five and ten, and he should sign in that range.

Jonathan Gray Position: RHP School: Chandler HS State: OK Height: 6’4’’ Weight: 240
Birth Date: 11/5/91 Seiler Rating: 3C1 Commitment: Oklahoma
Jonathan Gray is a big-bodied right-handed pitcher from Chandler, Oklahoma, a town roughly equal
distance from Oklahoma City and Tulsa in the middle of the state. Gray is a late riser up draft boards,
and while he doesn’t offer a lot in terms of projection, he offers a durable body with solid current stuff.
Using a pro body that profiles to eat innings, he brings an above-average fastball with average to aboveaverage
command. It also sits at 88-92 and touches 94. It plays up because of his command, so while it
doesn’t have elite velocity, it is a solid first pitch to his arsenal. He only throws one other pitch
consistently, a slider, but that doesn’t seem to be a major issue for most scouts. The slider flashes
above-average potential, sitting 78-80, and he can spot it pretty well, too. There’s concern that he
struggles with repeating it, and he might be prone to some elbow troubles as the result of some
awkward deliveries of the pitch. He throws a variant of a splitter as his neutralizing pitch for lefties, but
it’s fairly raw, and it’s likely to get scrapped in favor of a true changeup in the pros. Much of Gray’s value
is in his body, and his raw stuff profiles best as a number four starter that eats innings at league average
production. His Oklahoma scholarship may get in the way, but he profiles as a solid sixth to eighth round
prospect that could go a couple rounds higher if a team believes his stuff is a little better.

Mike Giovenco is a big-bodied right-handed pitcher from North Park University in Illinois. Giovenco
originally attended Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois, a northwestern suburb of Chicago. He was
followed in high school because of his large size, but he went undrafted and headed to play ball at the
University of Illinois at Chicago. That was short-lived, however, as he redshirted during his freshman
year, then he transferred out to play at North Park. After a fairly disastrous redshirt freshman campaign,
he seemingly put it together as a sophomore by besting his numbers in pretty much every category. The
Twins made him their twenty sixth round pick last June as a result, but he decided not to sign in order to
return to school for his redshirt junior year. Though he hasn’t been as dominant as he was last year, he’s
put together another excellent season for North Park, and he should improve on his draft position. His
pure stuff is pretty solid, and he looks like a potential number four starter because of his perceived
durability. His fastball is an average 88-90 mph pitch, touching 92-93 at times, and he commands it
much better than he did just two years ago. He throws a fringe-average slider and average curveball, as
well as a fringe-average changeup, and his success will depend entirely upon the development of those
pitches. His mechanics aren’t necessarily pretty, but scouts still think he’ll produce well if given
adequate time in the minors. He should go in the eighth to twelfth round range as a signable 22-year-old
junior.

Jason Mitchell is a solid senior right-handed starting pitcher from the University of Texas at Arlington.
Mitchell originally attended Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was a solid
college recruit, but not much of a draft prospect. He went undrafted out of high school in 2006, and he
headed to Arizona State. He pitched sparingly in relief as a freshman, though, and that led him to
transfer out to Central Arizona Junior College. He immediately moved into a starting pitching role, and
he had great success. However, he didn’t get drafted, transferring to UT Arlington. He pitched mainly in
the bullpen as a junior, going undrafted once again, making it three times he’s gone undrafted. He
returned as a senior, and he has put together a fantastic campaign as a starter. He’s made himself a
solid middle relief prospect as a senior, and that has put him on the radar screen of scouts. His fastball is
an average 87-89 mph pitch that tops out at 92-93, and he commands it at an above-average level. He
adds in a potential average cutter, with a fringe-average slider, curveball and changeup thrown in. He’ll
probably drop at least two of those pitches in pro ball, instead focusing on his fastball, cutter, and
probably his curveball. He should be drafted somewhere in the eighth to fifteenth round range, and he’ll
likely sign right away as an above-average senior sign.

Bad college defense can inflate an ERA easily. He might be a mediocre pitcher.
Chas Byrne is a two-way player from East Tennessee State. Byrne came to East Tennessee from Science
Hill High School in Johnson City, Tennessee, a school that will become famous a year from now when
left-handed pitcher Daniel Norris is expected to be an early first round pick. Byrne has been a two-way
player since he arrived at ETSU, though he hadn’t received regular playing time with the bat like he has
this year during his previous two years. Instead, he spent most of his time pitching, first as a mop-up
man as a freshman, then as a weekend starter as a sophomore. He came into the spring as the Friday
starter, but that hasn’t worked out as planned, and he’s been their full-time starting left fielder when he
hasn’t been pitching. On the mound, he features a solid-average 89-91 mph fastball without much life,
and his solid-average curveball and fringe-average changeup haven’t helped things. He’s been hit very
hard, and his command has been below-average without much projection for more. That makes him a
future middle reliever in all likelihood, and he’s actual succeeded in bullpen roles in the past. At the
plate, he’s a fringe-average hitter with below-average power, and his greatest assets are plus speed and
plus arm strength. He could conceivably cover center field if needed, but he doesn’t have much
experience there, and he profiles best as a fifth outfielder. Scouts generally like him more as a pitcher,
and he should go in the tenth to fifteenth round range as just that.

Royals select
Scott Fletcher, OF, Auburn
Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/bhindepmo (follow me, because reloading my twitter page 40 times a day is kind of creepy)
Brian Fletcher is a powerful outfielder from Auburn University. Fletcher came to Auburn from Starr’s Mill
High School in Fayetteville, Georgia, a southern suburb of Atlanta. His father, Scott Fletcher, was a longtime
productive Major League player, but the similarities end there. Scott is a powerful player with a
long swing, while his father relied on contact and defense to carve out his career. Scott was noticed in
high school due to his bloodlines, but he fell to the thirty-ninth round of the draft due to his contact
skills and signability, and he landed at Auburn as one of their better recruits in a nice recruiting class. He
started on the team almost from day one, and he just finished up his third year as their starting left
fielder. An infielder in high school, those days are over for good, as left field is easily his most natural
spot on the field, if he even has a natural spot. His tools are decent, but a number of scouts look at him
as a potential bench bat with the ability to play left and right field, as well as first base and some infield
positions if absolutely needed. His hit tool is below-average due to a lack of contact skills, and he strikes
out way too much to be a middle of the order threat. His power is plus, however, so that brings
something to the table. He’s a fringe-average to below-average runner, and that affects his range, which
is fringe-average in left. His arm is solid-average, and the whole package isn’t quite good enough to start
at the next level. However, due to his power, he could go as high as the fourth round, and he shouldn’t
last past the seventh, or else he’ll return to school for his senior year.
Coffee. The NEW Performance Enhancing drug for Sport's Writers. Just ask Ken Rosenthal.

Kevin David
2010 MLB Draft: Top 30 College Catching – 24. Oklahoma State JR C Kevin David – On paper, David is a top ten college catching prospect, but his results through three years at Oklahoma State have been more good than great. There’s not much to quibble with when it comes to his excellent athleticism, strong throwing arm, and above-average glove, but all of that untapped potential needs to turn into production before long. His relatively low placement on the list — it’s possible he goes somewhere between round 5-10 — is more about the players ahead of him than anything else; if that’s a cop-out, so be it.
Intriguing.
I wonder if he returns to OK State to beef up his stats. He could be one of those guys that seemingly emerges from nowhere once he figures everything out.

Steven Neff is a Sophomore LHP/UT from the University of South Carolina. He is 6-0/185 pounds and hails from Lancaster, SC. He was a standout player at Lancaster H.S. In 2007, Steven was named the Gatorade S.C. Player of the Year as well as the PG Crosschecker S.C. High School Player of the Year. He parlayed his Senior season into being drafted by the Pirates in the 26th round of the 07 draft.
2008 was a very disappointing year for Steven as he was redshirted after undergoing the dreaded Tommy John surgery. In 2009, Steven saw action in 4 games for the Gamecocks. He pitched 5 scoreless innings in relief and he struck out 4 batters in those innings.
Steven played for the Florence Redwolves of the Coastal Plain League this past summer. He was a two-way star for the Redwolves. As a pitcher, he went 1-3, with a 3.29 era in 13.2 innings pitched. He saved 2 games, allowed 11 hits and fanned 12 batters this summer. Offensively, he hit .307/.564/.366 in 101 at-bats. He hit 8 doubles and stroked 6 home runs for the Wolves as well. Used primarily as a DH, Steven also drove in 26 runners and scored 16 times this summer.

We will also look for him to give us some innings on the mound during the course of the season out of the bullpen. He’s shown glimpses of a player who can hit for average and power and steal some bases. He’s just got to be able to do that consistently. Hopefully, he can grow this year to be the player we recruited, which is a player who can run and hit for average with low strikeouts and some power potential."
