Draft Day Three Open Thread & Links

I feel like we're at the point where so many picks have been made, with so much obscurity now dominating the proceedings, that it's probably best to start talking more about the big picture. So what is the big picture? We've now got months to start figuring that out.

    It seems

like they really went away from the high-cost-high risk-high reward picks this year, Jason Adam might be the lone exception if his bonus demands are accurate. I wonder if that is part of the process or if ownership was getting impatient? Maybe it’s just a reflection of the draft quality.

Eibner seems like the ultimate safe pick to me, if he doesn’t work out as a hitter he can always try again as a pitcher.

I thought this draft would really reveal more about The Process, but since it was a weak draft I don’t think we can make any conclusions about it. I’m as uncertain as ever.

by sfeldkamp on Jun 9, 2010 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

    Nah

Eibner is not the ultimate safe pick. In terms of talent, he was one of the top guys left on the board so we took him. Colon might have been a safe pick, but I think Eibner was an example of best player available.

i don't see what's so great about the eibner pick

he’s a pitcher, but if we’re using him as a hitter, that’s how he needs to be evaluated. so, we’re getting good defense, good arm, good power, but doesn’t he have below average plate discipline and contact skills?

i’m afraid that he’s going to have had too long of a lay-off from pitching that it’ll significantly slow his development or that he’s going to be a good enough hitter to give the organization hope, but never good enough to actually amount to anything.

by 9il on Jun 9, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The good news about his hitting approach is that it's not his plate discipline,

from what I’ve read. It’s his contact skills. He doesn’t chase pitches outside the strike zone, he just doesn’t always hit the ones in the strike zone. While neither is a good thing, at least he doesn’t have both problems to deal with.

yes, the similarities are certainly there

(hopefully the similarity that they’re both great ML pitchers), but AnKiel is a HACKER, whereas Eib actually has a sense of when to swing.

(of course this is only based on reading a few things, probably mostly written by people who also haven’t actually seen him play)

Yeah, I think AnKiel is more of a swing and miss at everything

Whereas Eibner has at least some control and judgment.

If the Hardball Times writes it, then it must be true!

Can’t wait for them to compete only for the world to end in 2012.

I’m actually concerned that Colon won’t pan out. I haven’t been high on him for a while, but have been partially swayed to the optimistic side by everything I’ve read about him lately. His uppercut swing bothers me a bit, but I think that’s the major issue I have with him right now. It’ll take some time in the minors before I really figure him out, so hopefully he gets there soon.

I’ll say I was pleasantly surprised with the Eibner pick. It’ll be interesting to see the play between hitter and pitcher and where that ultimately places him, but it’s a nice pick anyway.

The real pick I really want to see is Mike Antonio. I think he could be the wildcard out of the draft. He needs to put on some strength and fill out, but he is just a high schooler right now and has time to finish up his game. I’m not really sure who to compare him to, but I could see him as a legit starter in the majors someday.

And even if these prospects pan out, will they do so before Greinke, Butler, Hochevar, Gordon and Callaspo are gone?

It’s not like all of these players are going to be with the Royals forever. And it’s not like prospects always succeed in the majors, and do so within their first year or two.

    The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Jun 9, 2010 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

    No, I really doubt it

Some, like Eibner and Antonio, definitely won’t make it up until Greinke’s contract is up. The real hope there lies with Moose, Hos, Monty, Lamb, Crow, Colon, and to a lesser extent Gia, Dwyer, and Melville (I probably forgot someone). The chances that everything goes right are slim to none. And the chances that everything goes right and GMDM fills in any holes with acceptable or good MLB players is slim to none. In reality, 2012 is optimistic, but I could see 2013 being more of a boost year with 2012 being a transition year. This is, of course, if everything goes well. As Royals fans, we know not to expect things to be perfect and to go according to plan, but there’s a chance, however slim, that something goes right for the organization and things work out. I agree with you that it’s highly unlikely, but I can definitely see where they’re coming from on that article.

Pre-draft next year, we need a thread where the top-25 or so players are listed

and people group them based on their anticipated feeling if the Royals took that player:

    GREAT
    GOOD
    OK
    POOR
    WTF

I didn’t pay extremely close attention to the pre-draft stuff, but everything I read here and on other blogs seemed to say that the Royals should essentially be choosing between Pomeranz, Sale, and Grandal. Other names including Colon were mentioned as possible good picks, but the talk centered around those three.

Post-draft, everything I’m reading says Colon = GREAT pick. This makes me wonder if the overall opinion would’ve been the same regardless of which top-18 guy the Royals picked.

I was one of the guys that said we should get Grandal or Colon...

But I didn’t think we’d take Colon because of the smokescreens that kept going up. My question is this, when guys like Law and Callis put together their predraft rankings, are they swayed by where they think a team may pick someone? For example, did they move Sale up in the draft because the Royals told them they were thinking about him at #4 when he was really the #15 guy? Just a thought.

For me it's more about inconsistent reports on Colon's power.

He’s appeared to be a better pick to me as I looked into his stats and compared them with the scouting reportsHe led Team USA in homers and shares the lead at Cal-State Fullerton this year with 16 HRs as he’s recovered from a broken leg. Some scouts make it sound like he doesn’t have any pop in his bat. Statistically, the inverse seems to be true.

No one seems to doubt the contact skills and plate discipline. Defense is the only question.

If he’s a power hitting SS with fringe average defense I’m happy. Worst case he would be a stud 2B.

by WURoyal on Jun 9, 2010 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course he could prove to be someone who can't hit in the majors at all

We don’t know if he’ll make good contact or show power in the majors. Like all prospects, his worst case is total failure.

    True.

I’m simply talking about what the statistics and scouting reports collectively suggest. I don’t have a crystal ball.

I also think those statistics arm you with some ammunition when deciphering which scouting reports really make sense.

    Your stance seems to be

You don’t like Colon because he may not make it, but of course, that could be said about anyone the Royals select. I’m sure I’m oversimplifying but I don’t really get why you are so down on the pick.

    Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Jun 9, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I know much less about potential draftees than many who post here. All I know is what I’ve read about them (which is less than most) and what people around here have said. He didn’t get much buzz around here before the draft. And it seems like most describe him as a high floor, lowish ceiling kind of pick. Safe, but not tremendous upside. With regard to my above comment, the worst case scenario is always complete failure. I don’t think we should pretend that he’ll either become a good MLB SS, a bad SS, or a good 2B. There are many other possibilities. With prospects, complete failure is always a distinct possibility.

My problem with the pick, to the extent that I have one, is my problem with this entire draft from the Royals. It looks and sounds like the Royals were looking for safe, cheap picks which will complement a future Royals team full of successfully developed prospects. I think that’s a poor draft philosophy for the Royals.

    The immoderate moderator

by Scott McKinney on Jun 9, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the low ceiling is only true if you subscribe to the reports about him having no pop in his bat. Some reports and the statistics indicate he has a potential for good power which would make his ceiling quite high, since all reports agree he has good contact skills and plate discipline and could play 2B.

There is a good argument to be nade he was the number 4 guy in the draft. Sale is profiled as a reliever by many scouts.

by WURoyal on Jun 9, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

From what I read before the draft was that there were 3 levels of talent at the top:

    1
    2 & 3
and 4-20 who were all pretty close and included Colon. I don’t know if the Royal’s philosophy was “safety” as much as it was that they just felt like there were no players with a high enough ceiling to make it worth the risk.

We have met the enemy, and he is us.

by Royal Kingdom on Jun 9, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

If 4-20 were in a big group, then I would have thought that the discussions around here and elsewhere would have included 15 names and no short list of frontrunners. Instead, the discussions basically included 4 or 5 names and Colon wasn’t one of them.

I see your point, it was just this quote from Rany that stood out for me, I guess:
So here the Royals sit, drafting fourth in a draft where there’s little difference between the fourth-best and the 20th-best player in the draft

We have met the enemy, and he is us.

by Royal Kingdom on Jun 9, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

    Just for the Record...

…Colon was definitely on the short list of guys in that range as recently as April.

I posted just last week asking what had happened to him because I noticed that his name dropped out of the conversation in the last month or two. I don’t think I got any response.

As I recall it, going into the season, the talk (after Harper) focused on Taillon, A.J. Cole, Pomerantz, Colon, Renaudo and Machado.

by kcemigre on Jun 9, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

    That's fair

Frankly, I kinda wish he had gone for safer college picks this entire time. I like guys like Colon – polished bats, good kids from college, closer to the big leagues. I think you need to sprinkle in some high upside guys now and then, but particularly in a weak draft like this, I think you’re probably better off going with safer college guys. Look around baseball – many teams are taking college guys after about round three.

    Justin Hageman – RHP/OF // 6’3" 210 // Hopkinsville, Ky. (Hopkinsville HS)
Hageman is one of the top players in the state and is a physical and athletic kid who has a tremendous future. In his time at Hopkinsville High School, he has been named all-district, all-region and is a nominee for Mr. Kentucky Baseball for the upcoming 2010 season. He is coached by Greg Perry at Hopkinsville High School and played this summer for the Evansville Razorbacks. He was also recruited by Louisville, Kentucky, Clemson and Coastal Carolina.

Finwood on Hageman: “Justin is a true two-way player who will have an impact on the mound and at the plate for us. He is an ultra-aggressive and competitive young man who is a fearless competitor. We expect Justin to contribute right away as a pitcher and hitter.”

Hopkinsville pitcher Justin Hageman has signed to play baseball at Western Kentucky University, according to the Kentucky New Era.

Saturday’s story said Hageman, who will be a senior at Hopkinsville High, was 5-3 on the mound last year with a 1.60 ERA, following a sophomore campaign that saw him go 8-0 with a 0.64 ERA. He struck out 83 in 66 innings pitched.

The New Era story also said Hageman continues to draw interest from several Major League Baseball teams, including the Braves, Brewers, and Yankees.

    Cause he won't sign

It’s the kind of flier you take on the last day, but usually these kids have made the college decision already, figuring they’ll improve their draft position at least 20 rounds in college. I guess nothing is impossible, especially since they should have the money with all of these easy sign college guys, but if he was thought to be top ten round talent, he’s going to think he’ll be top 3-5 round caliber in 3 years. Now you’re talking high 6 figures at least. While GMDM has pulled it off (Keaton Hayenga comes to mind), these kinds of picks are more wishes than plans.

It's all ball bearings these days!

Justin Hageman Position: RHP School: Hopkinsville HS State: KY Height: 6’2’’ Weight: 205
Birth Date: 8/6/92 Seiler Rating: 3C1 Commitment: Western Kentucky

A two-way player who currently plays outfield, he’s also slated to play both ways at Western Kentucky, which means it might
be hard to sell him on just pitching at the next level. However, with a ceiling of a number three starter, a
few teams might want to take a chance on him at the back end of the top ten rounds. His fastball is
already a solid-average pitch, sitting 89-92 and touching 93-94 at times, and he does it without
maximum effort. His command isn’t great yet, but it will come with time because he has all the pieces to
improve with pro instruction. His frame isn’t necessarily the most projectable, so added velocity isn’t
necessarily expected, but it could happen. His secondary pitch is a future above-average to plus
curveball that simply overmatches players in his area. His changeup is only a fringe-average pitch
without much projection for more, but with his fastball/curveball combo, he’s a solid prospect with a lot
of potential. He could go somewhere in the seventh to twelfth round range, and he’s been rising up
boards quickly enough to take notice, which means he might be given enough money to be swayed
    away from college.

KLaw's review of the Royals' Day 2 Draft:

“Best pick of day two was local pitcher Jason Adam, a high school arm with a workhorse build who still needs to develop his four pitches. They took Arkansas two-way star Brett Eibner, who has said he prefers to hit, as a pitcher in the second round; he has upside due to his athleticism but his offspeed stuff isn’t advanced. Third-rounder Mike Antonio has a quick bat but didn’t hit well against awful competition in New York City, while Florida closer Kevin Chapman is mostly a one-pitch guy, and it’s a 50 or 55 fastball. They took a slew of college players without rolling the dice on any real tough signs, and the upside of this draft class seems limited to me.” From the AL review here(Insiders).

Seems as though he wanted to go to school... maybe that's why we didn't take him.

It currently sits 89-91 with good life down in the zone, and he has the makings of
becoming a power groundball pitcher. His breaking ball is a fringe-average pitch, however, and he’s
never really gotten a feel for anything that spins. His changeup is in a similar predicament, which is why
some scouts see him as a reliever.

Mark Blackmar is a two-way player from Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, not to be
confused with Southlake Carroll High School in Southlake. Both, just to confuse us, are called Carroll
High School in casual conversation. However, Mary Carroll is the school that has put out Major Leaguers
Brooks Kieschnick and Cliff Pennington after stints in college, and Blackmar could very well be their next
big league produt. Considered an outfield prospect until about a year ago, he took up pitching, and
things have clicked every since. His parents, interestingly enough, are pro golfers, his father being PGA
player Phil Blackmar. However, Mark didn’t feel like swinging a stick as much anymore, and he’s clearly
more of a pitching prospect now. Though he’s fairly maxed out physically, he features a solid pitch mix
already, despite his lack of experience on the mound. His fastball is solid-average at 87-89, touching 92,
and he pairs it with one of the best cutters in the prep class this year. His curveball and changeup are
both fringe-average to average pitches, and all of this makes him a potential number four starter if
everything pans out correctly. He doesn’t have a major college scholarship, instead possessing a Temple
College scholarship, but he may be a late signee of a major college program. He might need some work
with his mechanics, and though he’s a possible eighth to fifteenth round prospect, there’s a very good
    chance he heads to school.

    Another catcher

That’s 6 since round 17. Between that, all of the RH pitchers, and the college emphasis mea, we simply seem to be using most of this draft to restock the short season teams with a lot of competent spare parts that can play for a couple of years until we do it all again. It looks a lot like the back half of the 2007 draft.
