Why should a team send two top prospects for David DeJesus? He hasn’t hit for power (13 HRs career high) or stole bases (11, career best). He’s a "nice" player who, on a championship team, would be a fourth outfielder, or bat in the lower third of the order. But to merit two impact prospects? I wouldn’t pay the price for a poor man’s Randy Winn.
Chad Rader of whb810 writes that the Royals should look to trade Butler. Meanwhile, he makes a ridiculous statement about DDJ.
He is a "nice" player that would have much better HR numbers in another park (esp. Yankee Stadium), has always had a good OBP, and plays solid to very good defense. Fourth OF? Very few teams would not be interested in having DDJ and his contract on their team.

I wouldn't send two top prospect for DJ
But I would send one. The “poor man’s Randy Winn” is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. I kinda want DJ to go to a contender just so we can shut up those Kansas Citians that keep insisting DJ is “just a fourth OF for most contenders.”

I’m shocked that such an insightful and well-argued piece comes from a sports radio guy.

I listen to 810 with some regularity
I have never heard of this Chad Rader guy.

He's not an "on-air" personality
I believe he is on their sales staff or something.

I ain't buying what he's selling.
Don't Stop Believing!
So he's pretty qualified to write this piece
I’ll go ask our Director of Human Resources to write this legal brief then.

Give him a break
He probably was rushed to get his ‘research’ done before setting up for a location broadcast in a HyVee produce section somewhere.

nice
no he doesnt put up league leading eye-popping numbers in any category. But he does EVERYTHING well (cept get picked off too much).
He is the kind of player championship teams are build from, not around.
Keep him
~~~if there is one thing i absolutely know for sure its... ummmm uhhh.... uhhh
nevermind
umm
Have you seen his batting average and OBP lately? He is a solid lead off or number 2 hitter on a CHAMPIONSHIP team.
absolutely
I was refering to the traditional 40 HR, 120 RBI numbers that make people go gaga.
The "4th outfielder for a championship team" myth is really getting old
We have met the enemy, and he is us.
Absolutely no idea
what he is talking about. Petro is on right now talking about how DDJ is worth at least one major league ready guy that can contribute soon and that if the Royals can’t get that or a couple decent prospects, they shouldn’t do it. That at least sounds intelligent. The stories those guys write for the website are ridiculous.
Who is saying the Royals should get two top prospects?
and that’s only the first thing wrong here. As other people have said, this “DDJ is a 4th outfielder on a good team” is so widespread among the morons who to sports talk radio that, well, you’d think they were in sports talk radio.
Hey, at least it isn’t their job to know something about sports.
I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs and Beyond the Box Score.
Can't get enough of me? Check out my Twitter feed.
Well I think some are thinking that because of the potential Type A FA tag
2 draft picks if we decline his option and offer Arb. Can’t say I agree with it myself, but a top prospect and a lottery ticket would be nice.
What's up with the complaints?
This guy’s obviously a stathead who has well-documented his opinion with important stats like HR and SB. This guy’s clearly cutting edge.
It's all ball bearings these days!
Another sports radio idiot
It’s really hard to listen to any of these guys.
The immoderate moderator
I think he is worth one top prospect
then an average one. Not to mention it seems common for teams to overpay whether the player is worth it or not.
No idea who this guy is.
This is kind of akin to a message board post. Who cares?
- W. Bloomquist homered to deep center
- P. Earth explodes
He works for a sports news outlet.
But, you’re right. He’s given no indication that he’s worth listening to.
I Was Looking
For statistical evidence to back up my subjective observation that DDJ is hitting the ball harder this year than ever before. Google led me to this:
.362 – David DeJesus
Hitting a robust .325, Double-D has never batted better than .307 in a season and owns a career .289 mark. Why the increase in his average this season? I hesitate to use the word “luck” or “lucky,” but it seems like there might be some of that going on. DeJesus has a “normal” line drive rate of 20.2 percent (career 20.9) which really doesn’t support a .041 point increase in his hit rate versus his career mark. He did post a .335 BABIP mark in 2008, but that season he also had a line drive rate of 24.7 percent. Sell high perhaps?
http://www.rototimes.com/article/2010/6/BABIP-Skill-vs-Luck-Hitters—2
My question is how does any “luck” stat account for hard hit ground balls and hard hit drives that go high enough to be called fly balls. DDJ is rocketing grounders through the IF with regularity, and he has had a ton of drives run down in the gaps. He’s also pinned OF’s to the wall for outs numerous times.
My point is, what he seems not to be doing is hitting weak grounders and popping up very often. I have nothing but my eyes to back this up, but I think this at least in part accounts for his high BABIP this year.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
my eyes back it up too
thank you Chad Rader...
I heard u loud and clear…but if I was a championship team I WOULD trade 2 prospects for DeJesus just because I could…its kind of like when the Yankees forked out 10mil for Raul Mondesi just because they needed a guy that would hit 20hrs…not a lot of teams can do that…if I am a championship caliber team I am not worried about losing 2 prospect for a 3rd or 4th OF on the cheap that could fill a gap in case of injury or just be there as a solid veteran with good defense…I am not a DeJesus fan, but on a top notch team he makes a lot of sense, because he can play everywhere in the OF and a solid bat…imagine a team with DeJesus in the 7 hole and not 3 hole
Don't be lonesome for your heroes. Be your own hero.
and how funny is it that...
at baseball reference DeJesus has some pretty weak players that he compares closest too (including Terrence Long)…and the player he most compares to is Coco Crisp…now was Coco not a 4th outfielder on a championship team? nuff said
