Pena, in fact, has an amazing – and somewhat unheard of for a backup catcher -- underground swelling of support from fans who fill up chat rooms with pleas to Royals management to play the 27-year-old catcher more often.

Pena admits he is flattered by all the attention.

"I appreciate that so much," he said, almost bursting to get the words out. "I love the Kansas City fans. I understand Jason (Kendall) is our catcher and our No. 1 catcher. I want to support my teammates and the team. I don’t want to let anyone down once I get out there.

"But the fan support, it’s just great. When you have that fan reception, having people in the street stop you and say good stuff to you, that’s why I am in love with the Kansas City fans.

Sounds like a really good guy.

Being a back-up on an MLB team is still a dream-come-true.

I must be tired and cranky --

my first two thoughts are

Yes, but does he love his kids as much as Kendall?

and

Here we have another case of “fans love the backup quarterback” syndrome

But that aside, he certainly seems like a good guy and I hope he can continue to be a player that it’s fun to root for.

No backup QB about it

His defense wasn’t much worse than Buck or Olivo, and his bat has way more power than Kendall has. ZIPS rest of season projection gives him a .318 wOBA and Kendall a .295. Is there really a question of who should be catching?

I'm just referring to the phenomenon where fans love the backup b/c he has done well in

“mop up duty” and looks great, but when they become a starter, it turns out they are pretty normal after all, and fans quickly sour. Of course, that’s the cynic in me talking, and like I say, I hope he does well going forward.

I think it's a different situation

when the starter is a rotting corpse making $6M.

Brena Is A

Much better RHB, which is unfortunate, but he is as good as Kendall vs RHP as a LHB. His defense has looked as good as Kendall’s, and his throwing has looked better.

I'm fine with a guy

like that spending his career as a backup catcher…. after all they only play a couple games a week

I'm old school

you know when pitchers threw complete games even if it took 12 innings. They pitched every 4th day. And starting catchers were tough if they caught 120 games.

The poor, dumb bastard

Number one on my wishlist right now is Kendall out, Pena in. After that, it’s Pods out, Gordon in, Guillen out, Maier in. Beyond that, my wishlist is mostly sexual in nature and I’ll just keep it to myself, thank you very much.

Just because people want Pena starting over Kendall

doesn’t mean they think he’s like, really good or anything.

Same with Maier over Pods and even Kila.

Exactly

If we had a good catcher, it would be different. The same fits for everywhere else. There are just better options for us in the system.

He was the only Royal to acknowledge me last game I went

He went out to catch before an inning while Kendall was getting strapped up, and when he came back, I was standing up screaming from about the 5th row behind the Royals dugout about how much I loved him and that he should definitely be the starter. He smiled and waved. Then when Trey was walking back to the dugout after a pitching change, I told him how much he sucked and I hoped he would get fired soon and that Brayan Pena should be catching, and he didn’t respond, but security told me to shut the hell up. After the game, Pena gave me a fist pound. It was sweet.

Dear Alex Gordon:

I still think you will be awesome, but for the love of God, please stop getting hurt.

Sincerely,

RF

Trey gave you no fist pump?

With Boston all of a sudden having catcher problems...

Sure wish we could send them Kendall… Maybe we could do a Premier league type loan to them.

So

Brayan Pena is gonna be a manager one of these days?

Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/bhindepmo (follow me, because reloading my twitter page 40 times a day is kind of creepy)

Seriously

this has to be simultaneously one the funniest and and most depressing quotes of the season.

My dream is for Pena to catch twice in one week.

I'm not a sabermetrician, but I do play one at FanGraphs and Beyond the Box Score.

Can't get enough of me? Check out my Twitter feed.

The good vibes B. Pena tends to give out...

…I think put some lie to the theory regarding Yuni that Yuni has to be told what to do or else he won’t do it because that is what it is like in Cuba. That may be what it is like in Cuba, I don’t know, but I am willing to bet money that Pena is both a better clubhouse presence than Yuni and a harder worker.

Hopefully Pena gets a shot soon, and that someday he can back up Wil Myers or Salvador Perez and be overvalued by Royals brass for his veteran grit and whatnot.

by DarthYoshi on Jul 2, 2010 6:07 PM EDT reply actions

So at the game we went to on Tuesday night I looked down in the dugout at Pena

when they did the “Everybody clap your hands” thing, and he was clapping along. I thought it was pretty sweet, and sad, but sweet. And also illustrates why I love Brayan.

I would like to see him catch more. Even backup catchers get to play more than once every 3 weeks. And doesn’t it seem like Kendall plays better when he gets a real day of rest (admittedly small sample size, being as that’s the nature of the problem in the first place)?

by Gross(est) on Jul 2, 2010 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

there are 3 problems

1. Kendall is our “best” option
2. Kendall plays every damn day
3. Pena rides pine. Look at the man, he clearly needs excercise
