BREAKING: Royals Trade Alberto Callaspo To Anaheim In Exchange For Sean O'Sullivan And Will Smith

I believe Bob Dutton broke this story.

Either Jeff or I will have another post up on this at some point, but for now... farewell Alberto Callaspo. In the end, for me, you became extremely annoying.

Star-divide

  • Sean O'Sullivan immediately steps in and becomes the most Irish-sounding guy on the roster. (B-R page here) He is a 22 year old pitcher.
  • Will Smith is 20. He is from Georgia. (B-R page here)

Pointless instant verdict #1: well, alright, I guess. I don't know. Stay tuned.

I don't get it.

I don’t see why the main guy in the deal is a reliever, and Smith looks like he sucks (please tell me I’m wrong).

They way to look at this is

If O’Sullivan is > Lerew, Chen, Davies or Banny
This is a win. Lets face it our starters are shitty right now

Sean O'Sullivan=poor man's Kyle Davies

at one point highly thought of prospect in HS, been pretty mediocre in the minors. We picked up 2 pitchers who Baseball America described as having #4 SP upside. Maybe Smith has a little bit higher upside—its hard to tell from the way he’s been jerked around this year.

This probably doesn't mean much

but I saw Sean O’Sullivan pitch several times in low A ball (Cedar Rapids) and was extremely impressed. At age 19 he put up really solid numbers in the Midwest League and just looked like a future MLB pitcher. His numbers since then have not been as good, but he looked to have all the tools and he is still young.

by Black and Gold on Jul 22, 2010 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

Trade was fair

Bert’s true ability probably lies somewhere between 2009 and 2010 performances. Two young arms, even if the ceiling is only a #3 or #4 starter, is certainly fair. There’s a small chance O’Sullivan could prove better than that. It is fairly impressive just making the majors at his age, FWIW.

At the very least, this trade finally fits the “building for the future” profile we have been demanding of Dayton for some time.

One thing that I like a lot – an apparent emphasis on prospects that don’t walk batters. That’s a good start towards being at least an avg ML pitcher.

While I was quite entertained by Bert last season (and during his glory days on S. Street), I grew tired of his poor fielding and propensity to swing freely this season.

A very meh trade

I had high hopes for Callaspo and his stock has really dropped this season. The Royals traded him because the SS of the fairly near future is Moustakas and because they are probably content with Aviles/Getz/whoever at 2B. So they traded him for a couple of ok pitching prospects. I don’t see either prospect as a particularly high ceiling pitcher, but at least they are young.

Smith better than you think

The Minor League Baseball Analyst has Smith as Angels #11 prospect at start of season, ranked as an 8C (50% change to be just short of an elite play-solid contributer and projected upside as a #3 starter.

John Sickels had him ranked as a C+ (equivalent of above rating, "finese lefty prototype", an improvement to his change up would significantly improve his upside. He’s just turning 21.

Those are the 2 best minor league analysts in the buissness so I’m good with Smith being a part of the deal, O"sullivan also still young may be MLB filler better than Lagrew et all but does add depth to the staff. Could we have gotten more? maybe but not much more. Brandon Woods would have been an interesting get to see if change of scenary made a difference. It’s not horrible-it’s ok

Both pitchers especially Smith has upside

generally how i feel

Smith is the guy that could make this a real win for us. i don’t know the whole story here, but i think he’d more highly thought of if the Angels hadn’t jerked him around through 3 different levels this year. Royals are doing the right thing here sending him to Wilmington.

Good trade....

Will Smith was in the Angels top prospect list… I’ve seen him pitch – he’s fast, and when he’s on, he’s hot. He’ll be MLB ready in about 3 years.

Gut reaction:

Goodbye Bert, you over performed in some areas (power, 3B defense) and massively under performed in others (OBP, 2B defense, baserunning). As Will said, in the end, you did get annoying. And you really weren’t in our long-term plans. But you will eventually be remembered fondly, I’m sure.

I know nothing about who we got in return. Time for some research, I guess.

by Freneau on Jul 23, 2010 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Sucky?

You have two very young guys for their respective levels.

Will Smith is particularly interesting to me. O’Sullivan looks like a #5 guy currently, but given some development he might profile as a 3/4. Plenty of time for both guys and cheap contracts, and, as pitchers, they might actually see the field in 2012, unlike Callaspo (who was going to take a backseat to Moose).

by WURoyal on Jul 23, 2010 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I think this is a key

Before the season, Callaspo’s spot was already in question. The Alex Gordon Saga sorted that out, but once Moose makes the jump (likely next year earlier than later) Callaspo will again be without a position. Might as well get some more pitching stock and hand off a player that will soon be obsolete.

"Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic."

by MinnesotaRoyal on Jul 23, 2010 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

And he's not a player who is more useful to another team.

As a poor defensive infielder (setting 3B and 1B aside), Callaspo must be hitting well to justify a spot on the active roster. He doesn’t have the power to be a DH, or the ability to play multiple positions to be useful as a utility guy. He is your everyday 3B.

The Royals have two players I’d rather have at 3B everyday starting next year. Easy decision (and not a situation where Callaspo is forced out due to the depth of the Royals system at 3B either). It’s a poor, poor team where Alberto Callaspo is deemed the everyday 3B of the future.

by WURoyal on Jul 23, 2010 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Edit: he’s clearly more valuable to a team with absolutely no 3B options.

Just saying he’s not a guy who gives you a lot of options, which is bad for an IF with a lifetime .738 OPS

by WURoyal on Jul 23, 2010 12:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, for sure

When their “3B of the future” Brandon Wood has an OPS of .411 (I’m serious. His OPS has never been over .559, look), Bert has the look of someone that could definitely provide some offensive assistance. I’m glad that he can be looked on in that light, though. I don’t know what the Halo fans think or what their system looks like, but his .718 OPS is enough for me to say he’ll be, at the very least, a solid offensive improvement at the position. And maybe the Angels can work some magic and get him to hitting back to last season, too. Who knows.

O'Sullivan

has never struck out a lot of guys at any level. Either he’s going to have the same K/9 numbers for every level, which could be passable, or he’s gonna flop as a starter and become a reliever. Considering the current batch of acclaimed prospects, if O’Sullivan is starting in 2012, then things have went horribly wrong.

Gut reaction: meh?

I’m not really sorry to see Callaspo go. The pitchers we got in return are mildly interesting, but not exceedingly so. Smith could be interesting in a year or so. I can’t see O’Sullivan holding a rotation spot long term, although he may eventually allow the team to get Kyle Davies out to the bullpen.

Biggest question coming from the trade: If pitching is the currency of baseball, when do we start spending it on some bats?
