Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Yankees Blast Royals

This game pretty much epitomized the season. Read on if you want to hear about it.

Star-divide

  • It was your typical weird lineup out there.
  • The Royals got a lot of hits tonight. Left a million guys on-base. Didn't score enough runs. Singles + steals isn't enough sometimes, because you have to keep hitting singles.
  • Jose Guillen had a gigantic at bat in the 8th inning. Didn't come through. This isn't totally fair, as Jose had a decent game. Nevertheless it wasn't quite the huge surprise that the Yankees radio team made it out to be.
  • Kendall had a passed ball that was relevant in the game.
  • Willie Bloomquist did Wilie Bloomquist things.
  • It felt like Bruce Chen was pitching good out there. I kept thinking, "he's hanging in there!" The bottom line is that he allowed 5 runs in 6 innings, and it could have been worse. Not good enough. That's been the starting rotation, save Greinke, all season.
  • Blake Wood isn"t that good. Never has been. For all the talk about Yost's magical work with the bullpen, there's no amount of stability or leadership or calming influence that's going to make Blake Wood effective. Not when he's not striking anyone out and frequently pitching with men on base.
  • Royals lost.

And DeJesus got hurt.

A not insignificant detail. All the more so because it gave AnKKKKKKKiel his opening to cool the sweaty crowd with his mighty whiffs.

You missed DeJesus almost ripping his thumb off and is out for the season.

Convenient for Ankiel.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Yeah, they just said this series so far.

I don’t have high hopes though.

Any word on the ownership situation?

The sportsradio was buzzing about it today.
Also, this is day 3 of life without Air conditon. Last night my thermostat read 94 at 10:30 at night.

Stuck following the Royals since 1976.

I don't remember the exact quote

but I remember a couple years ago Dayton Moore talking about how he was looking forward to having enough depth in the future that if a guy made a really dumb mistake he could just straight cut him after the game.

I’m pretty sure Jose would be a good test to see if he meant it or not.

I gotta disagree with Guillen being decent.

Although admittedly every time he came to bat all I could see was him jogging home while Betamit was getting called out.

missed the game

but wasn’t at all surprised by AnKKKiel’s line.

DeJesus getting hurt

probably deserves its own post, what with all the trade value implications.

one is a lefty pitching prospect with a decent ceiling the other is a #4 starter at best

Smith could be good, has been up and down in the minors.
O’Sullivan could be a #4 starter, but that is an optimistic ceiling; more likely, he is a AAAA swingman type starter who doesn’t really have a spot on the ML team (not enough K’s for one thing)

Would you like to follow me on Twitter, Facebook, or my blog...well you can't.

Just like to reiterate how much I hate this team.

Kendall, Bloomquist, Betancourt, Podsednik, Ankiel. Has there ever been a more depressing collection? Kendall was intentionally walked to get to our #3 hitter. Pods misplay in the 8th was classic.

How is it possible that this is the team I have to root for? Ankiel? I’ve been laughing at teams who employ Kendall for over 5 years! Now we have him for two?! Podsednik. Ugh. Can’t stand him. And freaking Betancourt? How about that relay throw home tonight. He’s unwatchable.

I Hate this team.

How could I forget Guillen?

What a turd sandwich. I find it so insulting when a guy has such a drastic improvement in a walk year. God I hate this team.

Ankiel!

0 for 11 in his last 3 games with 8 Ks (2 games in Omaha)

5 Ks in his last 5 major league PA

Saw Jason Kendall intentionally walked so that he could strikeout with 2 outs.

This is going to sound very mean to some

For all you dreamers out there that thought we were on the verge of competing this year right before the All-Star break, welcome to reality. You say it’s more fun to have hope and be optimistic. Well, I disagree. It’s much easier to accept the reality of suck that this team really is when you have already come to reality with it rather than living on false hopes and dreams.

Am I the only one that feels like...

…I’m watching Walmart crush some little mom & pop joint when the Yankees play our Royals? Looking at this lineup tonight before the game I just laughed. Staring with Chen vs. Sabatthia (sp?)……really? Wonder how this one will turn out. Baseball makes me cynical sometimes.

the highlight of the last 3 innings was the cameo by Jose Rosado in the booth

Optimism vs Pessimism

While I agree that “acceptance” is the proper stage of grieving for this team, what really bothers me is that the roster is so full of guys who are genuinely hard to watch, and not necessarily for their lack of talent, but as much for what they represent:

Kendall – Moore’s misjudgment of veteran leadership

Betancourt – Moore’s arrogant refusal to consider defensive metrics

Podsednik – Moore’s mistaken belief that speed matters more in the leadoff spot than OBP

Ankiel – again with the defensive metrics, plus thinking plate discipline doesn’t matter if you have mediocre power. (That would be OK if he actually had + power…)

Davies – Moore’s stubborn belief that “stuff” will trump results (even if it takes 15 years, I guess), and his inflexibility to even consider a try in the pen as a last resort

Guillen – Moore’s refusal to acknowledge the concept of a sunk cost, and simultaneously undervaluing the concept of opportunity cost of not giving Kila a look (Glass gets some blame here, probably, as well)

I suppose I could go on – but that’s enough, don’t you think?

"We're gonna win with pitching and defense" General Manager Dayton Moore, circa winter 2009

"Where did all these Indians come from?" General George Armstrong Custer, circa summer 1876

Please

By all means go on, in my opinion it can’t be said enough. Sad, sad, sad!!!

I have to think that at some point, Blake Wood will start striking people out

I mean he throws hard…..he didn’t have horrible strikeout rates in the minros…..am I crazy here?
