Yankees Score Early on Bannister, Eventually Win 7-1

What a horrible game to watch.   The team was down early.  Rain delay to extend the pain. At least RicK AnKiel only struck out once.  Alex Gordon with an error on the first play in the field.  At least we didn't get shut out.

the only thing that tells me Billy Butler isn’t Ken Harvey with a proper grip is the age thing. But, Butler seems like he could just disappear off the planet within 2 years of a certain point

a proper grip does a bit

Harvey was putting up below average numbers with a hand and a half on the bat and a ridiculous swing.

But anyways, Kendall hitting in front of Butler is going to probably lead Butler to put up 45 GIDP or something ridiculous this year. Kendall is too slow to be batting in front of Butler.

Aviles should get the 2 spot back sometime in this year. If only Ned would stop giving his Brewer buddies the 1-2 spots

I faught it for a long time, but I'm finally in the camp

that says we should deal Butler in the offseason. Hosmer will be ready soon and Kila should be the DH here. He just doesn’t fit into our long term plans very well and he could bring in one hell of a haul. I would ask for the moon for him and someone will do it, believe me. A Butler trade could bring in the pieces that we don’t have in the minors (2B, OF, righty starter) and we could be rolling in a few years. I don’t think I’d deal Greinke or Soria just yet but a Butler trade could be what we need.

Not in the long term plans?

He’s TWENTY FREAKING FOUR. He will peak in 3-4 years.

by AxDxMx on Jul 24, 2010 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Ok, so we deal Hosmer? Kila? Moustakas?

Butler is a fine player. He’s a fine player that may eat himself out of the league in three years. I say this and he’s by far my favorite Royal since Sweeney. I’m just saying that there are players that fill his role in our system and we could pull in a huge haul for him right now or in the offseason. It just seems to make sense to deal him (I don’t really trust Moore to do this, but what choice do we have) right now. We want to make an omlet and in order to do that, we’re going to have to break a few eggs. It’s like the people who were opposed to dealing DDJ. That drives me nuts. He’s average. Teams would overpay for him, but because an average player sticks out on a shitty team, everybody wants to keep him around so that we get nothing but a soon to be declining player that everyone loves for nostalgia reasons. Hard decisions are going to have to be made (and I doubt they will) if we ever plan to compete. Billy is awesome, but there are players coming up through our system to replace him and we need more of them. Trading him makes good sense.

Butler is worth FAR more to us

than he is in a trade. I keep reading things about him being compared to Ken Harvey and maybe I can see it with regards to body types. But conditioning isn’t what ended Harvey’s career; it was his hitting mechanics. Butler is coming down on the top of a lot of balls, but does anyone see something specifically that Butler’s doing wrong? Harvey had this loop that eventually made it hard for him to get around on fastballs.

I’m no expert on this, so maybe someone who knows more could comment. That said, here’s a few more reasons to keep Butler:

1. You won’t get anything in a trade. Moore couldn’t even trade Butler for Yuni. Real talk. There won’t be a “haul,” that much is for sure.
2. If you want to win in 2012-13, you can’t run out all prospects. You have to have some “veteran leadership”. Butler, DDJ, Aviles and even Gordon should all still be on the team and be supplemented by Moose, Hos, and Myers.
3. You’re idea is right to trade someone who get us more than what they’re worth to our team, but Butler is not that guy. How about Soria?

by Dadunca on Jul 24, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, Butler's trade value is not high

Billy is about middle of the pack offensively at 1B, and towards teh top end of the DHs, but I can’t see him commanding much in trade either til he starts hitting home runs. Link goes to Jeff Z.’s graph of wRAA.

http://www.royalsreview.com/2010/7/22/1582511/comparing-offensive-output-of

I have a feeling Kila won’t be long for this team. 2011 and that’s probably it.

Oh come on Butler is a solid player and he'll get more power as he enters his prime. He's 24 years old.

Not saying he’s gonna be a monster hitter, but he’s a guarantee to be in this league 8-10 more years as at least a pretty decent bat. He’s not Miguel Cabrera, but he’s not THAT bad….

Killing time until time kills me

by EspeciallyK on Jul 23, 2010 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

in all fairness, he is a decent player. However, his defense is terrible. He is slow. And...he doesn't hit for much power at all.

His doubles are what have always kept me from being too disappointed. But…the power has to eventually come for Butler, or he is only going to be decent player. A singles hitter who is a log jam on the bases isn’t super helpful.

I would agree that if we were given a good offer for Billy we would need to seriously consider it. However…I do think Dadunca has a point. His trade value is probably not too high right now because of the reasons above. And…it boils down to what we could get for him.

But…I do think if you could trade Billy for good prospects, it would be a savvy move. And…Dayton is pretty savvy, right?

Okay, well maybe we should tell that to Rain Man, because he practically bankrupted a casino, and he was a ri-tard.

his defense is average this season according to Fangraphs

I personally don’t buy that but hey if its on Fangraphs it must be true

No

Its half a season.

As everybody who cites UZR will tell you, that is far from enough to go on.

by kcbottom9th on Jul 24, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh come on Butler is not even close to "a singles hitter."

Again, he isn’t a great hitter for a 1B/DH, but he ain’t exactly Casey Kotchman. Not saying he should be untouchable…but him having a “down” year of a .854 OPS is no reason to give up on him, call him Ken Harvey, predict he’ll be out of the game in two years, and call for him to be actively shopped around the league b/c he’s just a singles hitter.

Going a bit overboard…again, he’s 24. Three years away from his prime years, right? Maybe we could do something crazy like let him keep developing….

Killing time until time kills me

by EspeciallyK on Jul 24, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said anything about Ken Harvey.

And…you need to re-read my post if you are claiming that I am “giving up on him”. And….understand that again..he should absolutely be someone that we are listening to offers on. I don’t think there is any question about that. He is not a singles hitter…so, that may have been a bit of an overstatement to make a point. But….my overall point was that if he does not develop his power, he is decent (and not that great). If we get an offer of value, cashing that in versus…waiting too long once again to optimize a player’s value would be a shame.

Okay, well maybe we should tell that to Rain Man, because he practically bankrupted a casino, and he was a ri-tard.

not just from tonight...

the guy has sucked over multiple seasons, there’s no upside and he’s going to start getting expensive…i would non-tender him this offseason for sure.

Yep.

The joy of the Strasburg game probably kept me on longer than it should have, but I finally exited that bandwagon around the All Star Break.

I'm done with any Royals starter not named Greinke, Hochaver, and maybe Chen.

It’s a fucking joke that Tejeda is not in the rotation. Thank god Lerew is gone. Hopefully O’Sullivan can work over the Yanks tomorrow like he did last week. I think we need to give Banny the “It’s not you, it’s me” talk and ship him to the Cubs.

Quite pleased with Gordon's first game back

Seriously.

The error was on a transfer of the ball from glove to throwing hand – had little or nothing to do with OF play. Looked just fine going back on that one line drive. I realize he is a work in progress defensively, but I really don’t mind using the rest of this season having him learn on the job out there.

Offensively, hit the ball pretty hard twice, just unlucky. Another flyout was hit to fairly deep CF. Only one bad AB, and he didn’t look like he was trying to pull everything.

is the lack of pulling a plus or minus?

(especially when pulling is kinda helpful in that park)

You can definitely see his power. Although they were warning track type shots, he didn't completely center them up.

I can see what you are saying here. And….I am definitely glad that Gordon is back. We needed some sort of extra base power inserted into this lineup. And…if he can be more selective than in the past, he could be someone who gives us a nice surprise.

Okay, well maybe we should tell that to Rain Man, because he practically bankrupted a casino, and he was a ri-tard.

by Clearly Ambiguous on Jul 24, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

That one he hit to the track was impressive

As the swing he took looked like it should have been a can of corn. Gordon has some serious power, and if he truly is hitting to all fields now, he could be very dangerous!

by AxDxMx on Jul 24, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll say it again...

How in God’s name are all these miserable players on the same baseball team? And why does it have to be the team I’ve loved for almost 30 years? Kendall, Bloomy, Pods, Guillen, Ankiel, Yuni, (Francouer)…makes me want to puke. I literally can’t stand to watch the games. I turn on and off the radio five times a game.

Don't look now, but

the Royals are tied with the Indians in last place.

At least they didn’t give up any home runs in a Bannister game for a change.

just 10 good days from being 10 games ahead of the Indians and probably still in 4th place
