i should have dreamed a little bigger

btw… what’s this site’s take on Inception? it seemed like everyone i talked to in person had some sort of battle royale over whether it was amazing or just okay (as in didn’t make sense).

thought it was great

the complexity is really what made it for me

batter nine you sucky

Prediction:

A-Rod does not get to 600 against KC. O’Sullivan lasts only 3 innings today.
Royals win 11-8.

sorry if my off-topic posts clutters the gameday threads

but do any of the statistics websites do a K/PA rate? it just seems like it’s superior to the K/9, but K/9 just seems like the standard. I wish all pitcher rates were on a per-batter basis rather than innings basis.

by 9il on Jul 25, 2010 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, that seems a little more intuitive

i.e. – what are the chances this guys strikes out the average bater?

I’d like to find out too.

by Crooow on Jul 25, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You can figure it for yourself of course

Just add all the HBP + BB + AB

yeah, it's not too hard

and i more or less do that stuff in an eyeballing sort of way, but i’d prefer to look at one number, do no calculations and save time.

by 9il on Jul 25, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

and it's not really just for me

i’m hate when people talk about a pitcher’s great K/9 rate, but just need to cut down on their inflated BB/9 and hits as if the number of batters faced isn’t a significant factor in their strikeout rates.

by 9il on Jul 25, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe you should get a TM on that stat and write a formula in EXCEL to figure it for you.

Start a webpage and sell it to GMDM and revolutionize the game. :)

Fair enough

I ran those stats just to see what they would look like. Top 10 in K/PA:

Jered Weaver – 0.2712
Josh Johnson – 0.2670
Clayton Kershaw – 0.2621
Jon Lester – 0.2614
Francisco Liriano – 0.2603
Brandon Morrow – 0.2581
Yovani Gallardo – 0.2555
Tim Lincecum – 0.2523
Jonathan Sanchez – 0.2424
Mat Latos – 0.2382

And compare that to the top 10 in K/9:
Brandon Morrow – 10.01
Clayton Kershaw – 9.943
Jered Weaver – 9.873
Francisco Liriano – 9.811
Yovani Gallardo – 9.753
Tim Lincecum – 9.547
Jon Lester – 9.519
Josh Johnson – 9.463
Jonathan Sanchez – 9.297
Tommy Hanson – 9.064

Lots of the same names. Don’t know if it tells you much else than K/9, but it could be interesting with BB/PA.

by MinnesotaRoyal on Jul 25, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

interesting

maybe the reason K/PA isn’t used is because there isn’t as much variation as i had thought and it’s just easier to read.

you throw gordon breaking pitches for strikes early in the count, fastball outside that he fouls off, then breaking stuff in and off the plate for the K (change low and away may work as well).

basically, anything but a fastball down the middle of the plate and he’s not going to do anything with it. it’s really not hard to understand, he refuses or is incapable of altering his approach.
