How Did Sean O`Sullivan Look Today?

I missed the game. Curious. How did Sean O'Sullivan look out there?

Obviously, he ended up with a bad day in the boxscore, but I wonder what you fellas saw.

"I think I pitched better than the results showed," said O’Sullivan, who allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings before exiting when rain forced a delay of 2 hours, 32 minutes.

"But that’s not what counts. What counts is who has the W at the end of the day."

Yes.

He got the Royal treatment on his first day

Mistakes, bobbles, and errors. I wasn’t watching, but it sounded like they just were barely playing behind him. Sort of like a Bull Durham moment.

Like I say, I wasn’t watching, but he seemed to locate reasonably well. With another couple years of work he could be a reasonably solid pitcher.

He wasn't stellar

But not all five runs were his fault, even if the stats say they were all earned. One major example was, in the bottom of the third, a slow roller went foul, but then skipped back into fair territory before reaching third base. Not the pitcher’s fault that it didn’t get fielded -and that could have been out # 3.

He’s as good as anything we’ve got not named Greinke and not injured.

This is pretty good

He pitches to contact, seems to throw strikes, but does’t strike people out. Reminds me a lot of Brian Bannister.

i think that's fair to say

don’t think the fastball has quite the velocity of Davies, but he’s also got it a bit more under control.

I thought he actually had better control than Davies

Didn't see it either 0 walks is nice but any pitcher on this roster has to strike people

out to try to compete otherwise they are pitching to get 30 outs.

Not to parrot others,

but he does seem to be a bit like Bannister. A few differences – he did get his FB up to 92 on a few occassions, and his feature offspeed pitch is a pretty nice 12 to 6 curve instead of Banny’s cutter. Changeup is also serviceable – but not as good as the curve.

As for this particular game, he looked to not have his best command at times; hence, the mixed results. This type of pitcher cannot afford to pitch behind in the count, which was when he got burned on Sunday.

Bad news – to me, body type indicates there may be no chance of him adding a few miles to his FB, unless McClure can identify something in his mechanics. Mechanics looked fine to me, so I doubt there is much growth left here. Improvements will come only from refining his command further and/or improved consistency.

Bottom line – it was the Yankees, so this wasn’t the disaster start some made it out to be. Definitely a #3 or #4 potential. Not hard to argue he is the 2nd best guy in our rotation right now. Team control and cost controlled for several years. One of Moore’s better trades, IMHO. (that may not be saying much!)

With regard to mechanics...

I definitely noticed how much he falls off the mound, without necessarily looking for it. I don’t know that much about pitching mechanics, but this troubled me.

disagree on his changeup

looked like his best pitch to me.

and he needs to trust his fastball a little more.

He’s got a really nice fastball that tops out at 90 mph with no movement.
His curveball has a wicked 1-3 break.
His changeup is thrown underhanded, which really creates some deception.

If you're looking for sarcastic posts:

Already understands the importance of emphasizing how well he threw over the actual results. Must have spent the first 2 days with the club learning that “skill” from Davies and Bannister.

Jeff can go over the graph but I do like the control but doesn’t miss many bats.

The bottom line is that he is better than Lerew and Chen.

Then again the majority of SP in baseball are better than those two.

Pretty much

It’s always a red flag when your numbers get steadily worse as you climb the minors.

Which this guy’s did.

I wish him well, and there is harm giving him every chance when the alternative is Lerew. But I’m not overly optimistic.

If he's still in KC rotation

two years from now, I’ll be very surprised (and pretty disappointed).
