And the guy from the Economist is dreaming

Does he really think a cricketer can hit a baseball pitch, or a baseball player hit a cricket pitch? It takes years to learn the necessary skills to star in either game. Even Michael Jordan, one of the greatest athletes ever, didn’t make it as a baseball player because he couldn’t hit the curve.

    Right

Just the plane of the ball.

In baseball the ball comes downwards as a rule towards the hitter. In cricket, most of the time, the ball is rising from the ground, often changing direction on bouncing (spin bowling).

I’m sure a cricket player could make contact in baseball, and vice versa, but it wouldn’t be all that meaningful contact.

by kcbottom9th on Jul 28, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions

But it's not like Jordon was swinging something to contact something else

on his way to becoming the undisputed greatest basketball player that ever lived. I think one could make a case for a similar skill set between great cricket hitters (are they called batters too?) and great baseball hitters.

It may not be the exact skill, but like ping pong and tennis, if you get the concept of one, you’ll probably be decent at the other assuming some minimum athletic ability.

Since cricket's so much higher-scoring than baseball

the batsman probably has a better chance against the bowler than the batter does against the pitcher in baseball.

This wouldn't bother me one bit.
that’s like banning baseball in the northeast cooridoor of the United States.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Oh, I'm not saying it's a bad thing

My understanding of Bull Fighting is that it’s barbaric (despite its “rich cultural tradition”), but banning Bull Fighting in Barcelona is like banning baseball in the Bronx. It’s a big story.

by Justin Bopp on Jul 28, 2010 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, my comment had nothing to do with bull fighting.

Just liked the idea of banning baseball in the northeast.

    I don't understand how

wanting to ban the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox is “bizarre”. While we’re at it, I’d also like to ban Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and Kentucky basketball, the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots, the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, Notre Dame, and DisneyPop.

    It's called

“things a lot of people are really really really really sick of.”

And yeah, I get that ESPN’s knob-gobbling of the Yankees and Red Sox is justified by TV ratings. It’s still sickening and annoying, and their coverage of these two teams in particular is almost TMZish in its tabloid excess.

    Barcelona's about half-and-half Catalan-Castilian

with most of the people in the middle not giving much of a crap and speaking both languages. Some of the Catalanists are very anti-bullfighting, not because they’re animal lovers but because they see it as something non-Catalan brought by the Spaniards. They’re wrong; records of bullfights in Barcelona go back to the 14th century, and there is a sizable number of local aficionados, enough to bring the big names to the Monumental bullring. I’m just guessing, but I bet Barcelona has the third highest bullfight box office in Spain after Madrid and Sevilla, just because it’s such a large city (3.5-4 million inhabitants, metro area).

The vote in the regional parliament barely passed, with the support of the conservative Catalanists, the leftist Catalanists, the Communist-Greens, and three of the Socialists. The rest of the Socialists (who are frequently Castilian speakers) voted against, as did the conservative Spanish party.

It’s weird that bullfighting caught on in some places in Latin America, like Mexico, Colombia, and Peru, but not in Cuba, the DR, or Argentina. They also hold Spanish-style bullfights in southern France, especially in Nimes, where the bullfighting season traditionally starts.

That was really awesome, thank you for the info.

Personal story; Back when I was in about 6th grade, my little Bro was in 1st we had the old school satellite dishes that would rotate around and find the satellites in orbit. One Saturday Mom, and Dad went into town (we were home alone for a good three hours) and we stumbled upon a Spanish satellite, with a channel that had a live bullfight going on.

We sat there and watched the entire thing. Later that day, Mom and Dad asked why we were so quite and did not have hardly any dinner to eat that night.

I still remember it. It affected me, and mind you, I grew up on a farm and have ate, chickens, cows, pigs that we killed(and I had named). This still got to us more than that.

    And….now you know.

    Is Baez actually a prospect

or just a placeholder? He just looked flat-out bad last night, though it’s hard to tell what he was throwing from where I was sitting. Nonetheless, the batters obviously saw straight through it. I was just under the impression that he isn’t a prospective major league pitcher and is instead an innings-eater for Omaha. Someone can clear that up for me, though.
