Will, Thanks for putting in the long hours during Christmas in July

    Keep up the great work!

Everyone who bashes Kendall..... he is a damn good catcher. Very smart behind the plate. He has great BAT CONTROL, which makes him a good top of the order hitter.

And this is rather encouraging as well

Moore indicated the club expects to clear playing time for Omaha first baseman Kila Ka’aihue in the near future. That points to heightened efforts to trade outfielder/designated hitter José Guillen prior to Saturday’s nonwaiver deadline.
"It’s important to get Kila on our club and create opportunities," Moore said. "I’m not saying it going to happen (today), but we expect it to happen very shortly."

Jose will either be traded or released. Hopefully DM can get something for him.

This is why I wasn't freaking out that Kila wasn't called up

Yeah I'm thinking the same way as you, Warden.

Something about this feels kind of different though…Dayton has clearly seen “the light” in some regard and is unquestionably trying to get younger with the MLB club.

Guillén will not be released, since we’d have to pay him anyway. Dayton can get something for him, if only a 4-A reliever.

Goodbye, Pods. You gave it your best, we’ll all admit that, even if your best isn’t very good. Hope you get to go to the playoffs.

    The links posted

generally agree that this was a good deal for the Royals. The Dodger and Giant blogs think that May could play in the majors next year as a mediocre starter or a good backup, and that Pimentel could be pretty good in about three years.

I think this deal can be win/win for Royals and Dodgers,

based mostly on how willing the Dodgers are to compete RIGHT NOW. Their ownership may be in shambles and who knows if they can keep up the payroll in the coming seasons, so shipping off a few “maybe” prospects for a player who helps them now could easily be a “win” for the Dodgers.

Pods’s only tool is that he can slap-hit for average well enough to OBP .350. Mediocre (often lousy) fielder, steals a lot but gets caught too much, no power, old and getting older, bleak major-league future.

May's MLE has 552 OPS for his career, but 667 for 2009 and 620 for 2010

certainly not great, but not awful if he can sharpen his defense (and maybe platoon against lefties).

    Major League Equivalent

It’s an attempt to predict how a minor league players batting stats will translate to the MLB level.

by Sweep_the_Leg on Jul 29, 2010 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

MLEs do not really "predict" how a player would perform in the majors (like projection systems do)

This is a oversimplistic generalization, but MLEs take a player’s numbers from a certain league and apply certain mathmatical adjustments to those numbers based on how players who have played in both leagues have collectively performed. In other words, if a player hit 10 HRs in the Texas League, how many runs would that translate to in the AL (which would likely be less than 10)?

They do not really predict how a player would perform, as they only take the player’s current season numbers and translate them without adjusting for regression/luck, age, or skill.

by Gopherballs on Jul 29, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I had been looking at those numbers

and was struck by the favorable home splits he has enjoyed the past two seasons. He’s not much of an offensive prospect, seeing as he struggles in neutral minor league settings, and by all accounts he doesn’t yet know how to catch. Hurray for a willingness to part with Pods, unless DM was serious about wishing to have locked him up longer, but I would stop short of calling May a major league backup — he probably isn’t even that, especially since you can find genuine catch-and-throw specialists any year at close to the minimum. Pimentel might be the better acquisition.

If Moore can move Guillen (even throwing in all of his remaining salary), then this will be a good July for Moore

The haul for his trades haven’t been huge, but he got appropriate value for the players traded. If he can get rid of Guillen and then move Kila up and get him in the lineup almost everyday, then Moore will have taken a nice step in the right direction. Of course Guillen should have been traded for nothing or relased months ago (March).

I just like the value in years at the very least

Trading one year (or rather, the rest of this year) of Pods for 6 years of May and control over prospects is a good deal, as is getting two very young pitchers under team control for Callaspo. I like both those guys, but the trades just net some contract value if nothing else.

“studs fag” is more recent. It comes from a quote of an extremely intelligent Royals fan on the Royals Facebook page. In an inspired defense of players such as Yuni, Kendall, and Guillen, one user said “screw off! all those guys are studs fag!”

    Fair deal

May is kind of interesting as a work in progress backstop. Unfortunately, it looks like he is out of options (Dodgers purchased his contract after the 2007 season), so he will have to stick with the big club next spring or else be exposed to waivers.

It looks like Pimentel would not have to be added to the 40-man roster until next year, so the Royals should get to see if his performance holds up once he gets out of the Midwest League, an extreme pitchers’ league before having to make the first big decision on him.

    Sickels 2010 Dodgers rankings

    17) Lucas May, C, Grade C: Made progress with the bat, but he was repeating the level and defense is still an issue with 20 passed balls in 65 games.

Pimentel wasn’t listed in the Top 20 or the dozen or so “others” with a C rating. This seemed a bit odd, but Sickels also noted that the Dodgers are strong on the pitching side and that these ratings were extremely preliminary.

I get the sense that Pimentel was not really on the "prospect" radar

until he posted the 9.7 K/9 rate this year, his first year in full season ball. Before this year, he only pitched in complex and rookie leagues, was an international signee (who create less buzz than domestic players who go through the draft process), was a little old for his level, and as Baseball America has noted, lacked noteworthy stuff.

Yikes, I was hoping that May was at least a good defensive catcher

But alas, no. I’m actually more happy with the acquisition of Pimentel than May. It looks like May has gotten to the top level of the minors and doesn’t really perform particularly well there. Those guys rarely go on to be useful major leaguers. I guess he’s minor league catching depth. Meh.

Pimentel is at least a young pitcher with some upside potential. He has the time to become perhaps a useful reliever. Maybe.

Still a good trade for the Royals given what they lost.

What concerns me most about May

is that Dayton is obviously going to have he and Pena compete for the 2011 backup job, and that May could win without the Royals ever having given Brayan a chance. Or even worse, with Pena being a first-year arb guy, Dayton just non-tendering him.

Im still astounded by this trade

It exemplifies everything this board wants in a trade – dealing an aging veteran who is over performing for young prospects. If this May guy is half as good as Carlos Santana he will still be better than Kendall..

Podsednik was a good player for the Royals and was really the only one playing well this past series vs the Yankees.

Gordon has absolutely no excuses left. I WANT THIS BOARD TO BE ON HIM IF HE FAILS. IF NOT GREAT! MORE IMPORTANTLY THIS GIVES KILA THE OPPORTUNITY HE DESERVED A LONG TIME AGO.

My eyes were shot from an intense video game and I was coming off a bong hit but I was literally shocked and had to re read the article in which Moore talks about giving Kila a shot. I was like WE"VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR TWO YEARS NOW!!!!!
