Hoping Ed Lucas gets a deserved shot in KC

With Maier (or Parraz/Lough) taking over Bloomys “duties” as a backup OF

If Guillen and Bloomquist are both gone

Kila and Ed would be my choices. Please let those trades happen.

He can play all positions...

…that’s about it. Injuries happen I guess.

by Boots 58 on Jul 29, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s not terrible as a utility player. His bat is bad, but not as bad as it has been this year. He can play any position (tho none well) and he can pinch-run (tho not well). He’s like a swiss army knife where every tool is dull or or rusty. It’ll do in a pinch.

by kcdc1 on Jul 29, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

playoff teams actually have room, and a modest need, for a pinch runner

In the playoffs, teams do not rest their regulars — the stakes are high, and every third day is an offday — so the teams can reconfigure their bench to add more situational players that they otherwise would not use in the regular season. Bloomquist is a decent pinch runner and can (kind of) play a bunch of defensive positions in case of emergency.

NL teams can use a guy who can play pretty much any position on the diamond

Could be a useful bench piece if a team lacked a versatile utility player.

doing many things badly isn’t a good reason to have someone?

In fact, if they do them badly, you think they shouldn’t be allowed to do them at all? Crazy talk!

actually, most the Royals trade candidates

are likely to clear waivers due to salary and could be traded in August. Even if someone claims one, the Royals can work out a trade with the team with claim priority.

If I were the Red Sox or Yankees

I’d be happy to pick up Bloomquist. You know he’s not going to be out there all the time and he’s reliable as a late inning/injury replacement. I think we got so down on the dude because he was getting marched out there when there were better alternatives. A spork should be used only for special occasions, like when faced with the complexities of KFC food or stuck with an invalid in right field.

Place witty signature here.

by LaFLamme on Jul 29, 2010 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Please trade Bloomquist

Also get rid of Ankiel and Kendall. Trade grit for talent and see what happens. Besides, we’ll still have Getz, who is far too young to be gritty but will be a prime grit candidate in 6-7 years. He’s white, fast, can’t hit very much, and plays 2B. What more could you ask for?

by Soria's Unibrow on Jul 29, 2010 3:46 PM EDT reply actions

Are you suggesting the Royals prefer a white player to a black player?

- "But Frank, that's the worst shortstop in the league."
- "That's what they keep tellin' me."

by hawkinscm87 on Jul 29, 2010 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

To throw a couple of non-white names out there

How about Rey Sanchez? He was pretty awful with the bat but he was good in the field. I mean, never once in his career was he above league average in batting. Not once. Finished -217 runs for his career. His value was derived from fielding, tho, and his ability to play 2B, SS, and 3B

Or maybe Shawon Dunston? Growing up a Cubs fan, he would show flashes of really good play. But he could never do it consistently (or hit that pitch six inches off the plate and in the dirt that he loved). He played 18 years and his highest WAR was 1.9. 13 of those seasons, he was below 1.

I suppose neither would be considered gritty, but you can be not very good and just hang around the league for a long time without being white and oozing with grit.

by sterlingice on Jul 29, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Shawon Dunston rules

My brother had his name emblazoned on his very first ball glove.

Me? I had some guy named Bret Saberhagen.

by Soria's Unibrow on Jul 29, 2010 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I have to agree with your unexplainable statement.

I would also have to lump the word moxie in there with grit. If you told a black guy that he had moxie, he’d kick your ass. A guy like Shawon Dunston had heart, not grit. Not to mention a totally bad ass way to spell the name Sean.

Ned likes Kendall in the 2-hole!

In a similar vein

White defensive ends in the NFL have “a motor that doesn’t quit” while black DEs have “athleticism” or “speed off the edge.” I don’t know why society words things this way. It’s just semantics, but it is weird to me as an English nerd.

by Soria's Unibrow on Jul 29, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

So Jared Allen has a motor that doesn't quit?

I was pretty sure he fit the crazed, white guy mold like Bill Romanowski.

by AxDxMx on Jul 29, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Allen's "motor" has been brought up a thousand times.

The “nonstop motor” is the new way of saying Guero Loco.

It amazes me that a team

having a good season, and in the hunt for a playoff berth, might decide that Willie Freakin’ Bloomquist is the missing piece. I’m not saying it won’t happen, I just think it is fascinating.

by Black and Gold on Jul 29, 2010 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Well for a small chance to make it prospect

And for a team that doesn’t have a player who can come in the 7th and play good defense at several positions. Or who can pinch run and actually not look like an idiot on the basepath.

Or a good locker-room guy with grit

GM’s see themselves in a guy like Bloomquist if they were to make it to MLB so yeah, you shouldn’t be fascinated why GM’s woudl would trade for him. It’s pretty obvious

by GobbleforCyoung on Jul 29, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

When 1 run is the difference between the playoffs and going home

a pinch runner with Bloomy’s speed might be nice, and totally worth the prospect they paid for it.

by AxDxMx on Jul 29, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

What is going on here?

It’s like RR has taken over as GM of the Royals and is unloading everyone we wanted traded for years now

If I see this lineup in September I will shit my pants:

Dejesus
Aviles
Kila
Butler
Betemit
Gordon
Someone other than Maier
Someone other than Kendall
Betancourt/Getz

The Royals have said they want to get him back at the 10 week mark

to assure them he’ll be ready for next year. So he’ll be back maybe the end of September. Wonder how that works into his contract situation.

Who I'd like to see traded (in order of WANT):

Kendall, Guillen, Betancourt, Farnsworth, Bloomquist, Ankiel, Aviles.

I expect two of them to happen.

FREE BRAYAN PENA.

by JobDDT on Jul 29, 2010 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

Switch Guillen and Kendall and I'm with you

I despise them both, but Guillen just costs so much more to be abysmal.

by Soria's Unibrow on Jul 29, 2010 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Mostly because I want to see Kila. Not sure that we really have a better option at catcher right now anyways (Pena?? Pina?? Penapina??)

by Boots 58 on Jul 29, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

One way or another Guillen is gone after this year

But Kendall is back next year. Then again, it gives GMDM time to get another piece of scrap for too much next year

by sterlingice on Jul 29, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be very, very happy to see Bloomquist gone

If Dayton gets rid of him, that would change some things for me. I could maybe start to think about getting behind Dayton again, and I never thought I’d say that after these last 2 years.

It’s really too bad about all this Kendall stuff.
