Game 103 Open Thread: Orioles (32-70) at Royals (42-60)

Baltimore Orioles at Kansas City Royals, Jul 30, 2010 8:10 PM EDT

Jake Arrieta v. Sean O`Sullivan.

Arrieta was once (still is?) considered something of a top prospect and has a 1.85 ERA at AAA this year. The results have not been there at the Major League level yet, as he's walking more men that he's striking out. That'll never happen to one of our guys though.

Fair enough.

It would be kind of unfair since those batters aren’t as used to breaking pitches, and probably gives a better overall view of their talent instead of them relying on a slider to strike guys out. Seems to be some benefit at least.

I love pitching fads

although sojmetimes the pitch stays, it just gets a new name

I swear when I was growing up people threw things like palmballs, circle changes, forkballs, etc

by Freneau on Jul 30, 2010 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

circle change is still around but now everyone just calls it a change up

but pretty much everyone throws it with that circle grip

Forkballs Are Gripped

A little deeper.in the fingers and are not thrown as hard. I was just reading about this. Apparently they’re hard on elbows, and this has resulted in a lot of surgery, particularly in Japan. I think the splitter has a lot the same effect.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Jul 30, 2010 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I threw a beanball.

I only pitched once ever. I played SS for our little league team, but I never pitched, and it started to rain. I was put in because the coach knew it was gonna get called early and he didn’t want to waste a pitcher. Beautiful strategy.

My husband has been watching it since the moment he unwrapped it, which he did as soon as the UPS guy handed it over. I’m not sure he’ll settle for 2010 Royals baseball for a while after this. But we do have tickets to the 8/17 game, so hopefully he’ll recover in time to get our “C’mon Chen” shirts.

OT topic but thinking of below average players here

Do you think when the rosters are expanding in September that Lucas May and B. Pena will get a chance to play at all instead of the base to base mentality of General Kendall?
