A Brief Burlington Royals Recap

Stay connected for news and updates

I'm sorry I haven't been to post a full Burlington Royals recap yet.  I've been all over the place over the last few weeks.  Burlington, Atlanta, Joplin, KC.  I'll be back in Burlington July 12, so hopefully I can get a quality post up shortly thereafter.  So far I've been to only one B-Royals game, but I have a small amount of feedback I can provide at the moment.

That said, two names to watch in Burlington after the jump:

Leonel Santiago (SP) :  6'0, 178 lbs, 20 year old from the Dominican Republic.  58.1 IP in 2009.

2009 traditional stats:  1-3, 5.40 ERA

2009 periphs / advanced stats:  10.18 K/9    2.47 BB/9    .442 (!) BABIP    2.53 FIP

Saw him pitch in one game against the Bluefield Orioles (W, 6.0 IP, 1 H, 6 K, 1 BB).  He moved much more quickly on the mound as the game went on.  Looked like he gained more and more confidence as he struck out more and more hitters.  To my untrained eye, it looked like it hurt him a couple times as he gave up a couple hard-hit balls that happened to find an outfield glove.  That said, he looked very sharp.  I have a hard time picking up pitches, but it looked to me that he had a fastball in the low 90s and some good breaking stuff.

2010 traditional stats:   3-0, 1.59 ERA

2010 periphs / advanced stats:   9.53 K/9    2.12 BB/9    2.55 FIP

Sample size warnings apply, but in terms of FIP, he looks like nearly the same pitcher this year, just with adjustments for luck.  Keep an eye on him.

Luis Piterson (2B) :  5'11, 155 lbs, 20 year old from Colombia.

2009 slash stats: .311 / .361 / .367

This kid was awesome in the one game I got to see.  He went 3-3 with a 2B, HR, SB, 3 RBIs and 3 R.  The HR was a line drive to left field that didn't look like it was going to be over the fence until it got there.  In the few ABs he's had this year (38), he's been raking.  The only disconcerting thing is that he has only 1 walk, but I assume the only way to impress people at this level is to hit the cover off the ball, which he is doing so far:

2010 slash stats:  .500 / .525 / .895

I wish I could comment on his defense, but I wasn't paying close enough attention to that.  Hey, beers cost $2 each at Burlington Athletic Stadium.  You can only expect so much from me.  I'll get some better feedback next time.

I took some photos, but they're pretty crappy since I had only my iPhone camera.  For some reason, i can't get them to upload at the moment either.  I'll get some better ones for the next update.

Please let me know if there is anything more specific you guys would like to know/see as I go to more games.
