So what should the Royals do with Kyle Davies? I always find it interesting to look at BR's "most similar players" tool at the bottom of the player pages. This is what it says for Kyle:
Kyle Davies: Similar Pitchers through 25
Brian Meadows (973)
Frankie Rodriguez (960)
Jamey Wright (959)
Chris Carpenter (956)
Jaret Wright (955)
Bert Inks (950)
Jeff Suppan (947)
Fausto Carmona (940)
Jay Hook (940)
Jimmy Haynes (939)
Of course this doesn't include another season of 5.20+ ERA / 1.50+ WHIP baseball. But who is the real Kyle Davies, Brian Meadows or Chris Carpenter? Could/should we hope for the next Jeff Suppan and hang on to Kyle?
Carpenter was good as a starter in Toronto but didn't knock anyone's socks off until he came back from a torn labrum in 2004 at age 29. I'm not comparing Davies' "stuff" to Carpenter's, but is there any solace in the fact that Davies will 'only' be 27 next season, even though he's been pitching parts of six major league seasons already? Is Davies still a project that the Royals can work on instead of keeping Bannister around? Will he be worth what the Royals would likely be required to pay him in arbitration next season (his last season before free agency)?
