Joe West's strike zone yesterday was indeed a thing of whimsy, but Hawk Harrelson apparently saw it as evidence of conspiracy.

Of course, I spent Saturday evening mocking his calls. For instance, when Betancourt homered, I said, “You can put it on the board. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!”

by jbrocato on Aug 23, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Not except for the full MLB.tv archive of the game, I don't think

but you can check out Gameday and click on individual at bats to see some of the ridiculous ball/strike calls. Gregor Blanco’s walk in the bottom of the 10th was highly dubious — either of the first two pitches could have been called a strike, and ball 3 was very obviously a strike. After walking Blanco went on to score the winning run, so those are probably the calls that stick in most people’s memories.

But while I was watching the game I felt West was horrible for both sides. Maybe he spent too much time staring at the light standards the night before and still had a retinal afterimages in his line of sight. Or maybe he was just Joe West being Joe West.

Someone who knows how can dig out the p/fx data to see whether it shows any bias in his ineptitude.

The reason Hawk was mad at him in the first place is because it was apparently his decision (according to Hawk) to start the game that got delayed..

..so it messed up their rotation while in a division race. That’s understandable..it was ass-stupid to start that game, whoever’s decision it actually was…but Hawk obviously went way too far. Even Frank Thomas was in on it…he b*tched about every other pitch. It was extremely unprofessional.

Ryan complained

about the same thing on the Royals’ broadcasts, but rule 3.10 (a) says that it isn’t the umpires’ decision whether to start a game or not.

The manager of the home team shall be the sole judge as to whether a game shall be started because of unsuitable weather conditions or the unfit condition of the playing field, except for the second game of a doubleheader.

Yeah, I had the pleasure of the Hawk broadcast

He implied… well, directly stated that Joe West started the game specifically to mess with the White Sox. He said something like “It messed with our staff… and Joe knew it.”

The story that they told was that Hawk actually talked to KC field guys who said “Yeah, we told West that rain was coming in 15 minutes but he said, ‘if it’s not raining now, we play’”

Well, if the decision was delegated to West

it was the Royals who delegated it. Harrelson should know better.

Ditto.

Harrelson one of the worst parts about being a sports fan in Chicago (though I’m not there anymore).

West was bad, definitely. For both teams. His zone was all over the place.

I absolutely LOLed at the Linebrink pitch that was RIGHT DOWN THE FRICKIN MIDDLE and got called a ball. Hilarious! Linebrink and AJ just froze, like “Really?”

Also, Hawk is intolerable. Can’t stand listening to that guy.

I rec'd this, but...

…writers here should restrict their criticism to specific segments of fans for both the Sox and the Cubs. By and large, the fans for both teams are great for their informed intensity. All orgs have a cool dedicated segment that deserve respect.

I loved it

When it was tied 2-2, he had mentioned something like “we had him struck out, but he hit an RBI.”

Then after the walk-off he said “That’s the third time they’ve scored after we had them struck out!” (i.e. all the runs the Royals scored of course) And that was followed by the quotes on that article.

Harrelson: This is absolutely … [five-second pause] … this is absolutely not right.

Thomas: This really sucks.

Heh

I’m always happy when Harrelson is unhappy at a Sox game.

West had a bad game. I seriously doubt he came into KC with the express purpose of screwing the White Sox over. Face it, this game featured winners and whiners, and we were the winners.

This is what I thought of...

when they mentioned that the Sox should intentionally cross up their pitches. I remember hearing about this 2 years ago. Supposedly the kid lost his scholarship for poor sportsmanship after this got shown on ESPN.

I thought it was WAY overblown and it was just a 18 year old kid doing something stupid.

He attacked the umpire.

There’s no question that it was intentional and he got to learn that actions have consequences. He could have seriously injured that man.

More reasons to hate the White Sox:

1) The Tom Gamboa incident

2) Ed Farmer, who single-handidly ruined one Royal season by injuring Frank White AND Al Cowens in the SAME game with beanballs

3) The Shorts circa 1977

4) Stupid white-trash exploding scoreboard

"We're gonna win with pitching and defense" General Manager Dayton Moore, circa winter 2009

"Where did all these Indians come from?" General George Armstrong Custer, circa summer 1876

Also

Was it the year before or the year after Gamboa when a fan came out and attacked the umpire. Brandon Berger beat the shit out of that guy.

Read the lone comment on the story

here it is (again this is a comment to the story where an umpire was attacked on the field in Chicago):

“Oh well…

With the absurd salaries these players make, I’m pretty sure they can handle whatever medical costs are necessary in attacks like this one.

On a side note, I guess it won’t be long before the unions start demanding some sort of “hazardous” pay clause as part of negotiating a contract. Unbelievable."

Hawk bugs the hell out of me

But in a way – an almost endearing way – that’s completely different than the effect Joe West has on me. Hawk is a baseball curmudgeon with a sickeningly sweet affinity for his hometown team. My skin crawls off my bones every time I hear him say “He gawn!” or “Galdarnit!” But that being said, Hawk IS a baseball man with genuine affection for the game and for his team. Joe West, on the other hand, is a self-promoting blowhard with the game of baseball far down on his list of priorities. He’s flat out bad for the game, not because of occasional bad calls, but for his disregard for the sport in general. His motivations are always in question and no baseball fan should have to dedicate time and effort to mulling the mind of an ump. Joe West has got to go. Hawk will be around forever and, though my skin will keep crawling away when I have to listen to him, that’s just as right as rain.

Hawk Harrelson is fucking insane

Most broadcasters don’t complain much about umpiring. Ken Harrelson does it all the time. And broadcasters almost never say or even imply that an ump is intentionally making bad calls to hurt a particular team. Harrelson does that at least a few times every season. His insanity is entertaining, but as a sports broadcaster/commentator/analyst, he’s a complete joke.

Is he worse

as a sports broadcaster/commentator/analyst than West is at an Umpire? I say no, and it isn’t even close. West changes outcomes by sucking. Hawk causes you to turn on the radio while watching the t.v.

I think the most pressing question

is whether Hawk was a worse GM than he currently is a broadcaster.

During [the 1986] season, Harrelson fired field manager Tony LaRussa (who was soon hired by the Oakland Athletics, whom he led to three consecutive AL pennants) and assistant general manager Dave Dombrowski (who became baseball’s youngest general manager with the Montreal Expos just two years later). Harrelson also traded rookie Bobby Bonilla, later a six-time All-Star, to the Pittsburgh Pirates for pitcher Jose DeLeon.

I thought he was born 85 years old in the White Sox booth and has been there ever since.

He was worse

as a GM. The Sox put him back in the booth where he does them less harm — as hard as that is to believe.
