Around SBN: 2012 Budweiser Shootout Entry List Released

Kansas City Royals Get 16 Hits, Score 4 Runs

Batting average!

Seriously, that is astounding.

  • 13 singles
  • 6 walks
  • 2 doubles
  • 1 home run

The home run is the best part. The Royals got one run with the solo HR, so everything else just produced three runs.

Amazing.

Someone actually hit a home run?

Who? Clearly they didn’t get the memo.

Im so glad I missed this game...

And even though Bullington gave up enough runs on his own to lose this one, it really was a team effort to lose that badly.

Ned = consistent

sometimes he pulls Kendall while down 10, sometimes he lets Kendall bat with the bases loaded down 11

also love the usage of Holland… where he wasn’t yanked until he loaded the bases. Brilliant

It's the little things

That make Yost so awesome.

*By awesome I mean shit.

by kcbottom9th on Aug 28, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

and by shit

you mean normal?

I’m not Yost fan but I do think he’s much better than Trey and generally a generic manager. If the manager had more of an impact on the game, I’d agree that he’s terrible. Managers just rarely have the chance to as bad as a player.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Of COURSE he's better than Hillman

Billy Martin could rise from the grave and take over the Royals and we’d still be on this suck streak. We’d all be in here insisting Billy Martin is the worst manager ever and questioning his every move. The inexplicable Kendall thing aside, I have absolutely no problem with Yost. I like this comment on the pitching: “We’re in the big leagues,” Yost said. “There are no ‘ifs.’ You have to go out and you have to pitch.” Which shouldn’t have to be said, but so often our pitchers have these Little League level meltdowns.

Yeah

I should have put that.

He’s a generic manager bot. In the grand scheme of things it matters not much at all.

I don’t really think he is much if any of an improvement over Trey, but its hardly woth arguing about. I do no that he really isn’t worth praising, which some folks did when he was appointed.

It used to be funny to be a Royals fan, now it’s just sad. I’m really down after this one fellas.

at least the postgame was kind of fun

after you lose 15-4, I guess one of the topics to cover is that watching preseason football instead of the Royals is kinda lousy

unrelated

former Royal Melido Perez was elected mayor of San Gregorio de Nigua, Dominican Republic back in May.

And I gotta wonder if trading Melido Perez for Floyd Bannister is one of those minor dumb moves that probably didn’t help this team out much in the late 80s/early 90s

Question...

Is RR going to jump on the betemit bandwagon this season? OPS over .900. For third base that is pretty darn good.

Looked a little at his GB/FB/LD splits and LD seems to be pretty steady, and his FB/HR seems to be pretty steady as well, but he is hitting a LOT more FB to GB than previously. Since this isn’t generating more HR/FB this must mean more FB gap shots which equal doubles.

Is this a good sign? Is this small sample size? Probably yes, and yes. Do we root for the guy to be on the team for two more years? Personally I want him for exactly two more years for his prime. Color me pleasantly surprised.

Isn’t he 30ish? if he was cheap for two years I’d be down with that.

by sfeldkamp on Aug 28, 2010 10:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He's 28. Turns 29 in November

I think he could be a decent hitter for next season. His problem is his defense. He’s beyond a train wreck at 3b and we already have plenty of guys that can only play 1b.
I guess leave him at 3b for next year and then bring Moose up next year post all star break.

Stuck following the Royals since 1976.

I ran some quick estimates in another thread about Betemit; yes it is a small sample size – but that aside, his BABIP is too high given his LD rate. The positives, as you alluded to, are a flip in his ratio of FB to GBs; combined with his career rate of about 15% HRs per FB, even adjusting his BABIP to normal, we come out with a triple slash line that looks like a decent ML hitter (a bit above avg).

The question, to me, is if this improvement is real, is it good enough to DH? I say that because Butler and Moose are the future at the only spots Betemit can play. Perhaps it comes down to this:

Is Betemit the better answer than Ka’Ahuie for the short (2 yrs) term? I say that because Hosmer will be here by mid 2012, and there won’t be room for all of these guys.

Can't we just stick somebody at 2B?

Or maybe we could move Wilson to RF first, then try 2B. It worked for Teahen!!

by AxDxMx on Aug 28, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Defense. Yeah.

He’s pretty terrible at 3rd, but is that the position he was meant to play? If not, maybe some work in the off season and he can become at least marginal.

The fact is that the large number of hits and no runs

is absolutely nothing new. Lack of power is one explanation. There’s probably a few others.

A final comment - about the solo HR

That makes the last 6 Royal HRs solo shots, and incredibly, 18 OF THE LAST 19!

The only exception – wait for it, wait for it…

It isn't astounding. it is just sad.

This a perfect example why we will finish in the bottom. We can’t score runs. We strand more runners than any other team in the game of baseball. Sad, very very sad….
