Gregor Blanco, Do You Care?
First there was Gathright. Then there was Freel and Josh Anderson. Then Brian Anderson, Pods, and Dick Ankiel. Now, we have Blanco. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone too.
Do you care? Are you interested in watching him play?
I don't know if I do or not. I don't have much of an impression from the pundits that he's much of anything. Tell me more.

I'm not interested
The Braves were my “second” team, because they were NL and on TBS all the time, and having seen and heard plenty about Blanco it’s safe to say he’s not good.
He seems to at least have a chance to post a decent OBP
something we haven’t seen very often in KC from the new guys.
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball...Rock Chalk Talk
why wouldn't i care?
he’s a decent defender and a decent on base guy.

he’s fairly young, gets on base (unlike any of the others listed) and he plays defense.
He's fairly bland
Boring bat, but gets on base. Not very young, not very exciting.
I’m pleased he’s playing, because he’s better than anything else. I can’t say I’m particularly interested in him.
im interested
He’s a young guy who could develop. Everyone wanted the other guys gone. Now you better be interested in the replacements!

I wanted Emil Brown gone...
but I wasn’t interested in having Jose Guillen as his replacement.

Hmmm
Having Blanco in the lineup makes me happy.
He has some speed, some decent bat skill, gets on base a bit.
Not a long term solution no, but I am really happy that Ankiel is gone.
Maybe not "interesting," but he certainly appears to not be too awful...so...whatever.
Killing time until time kills me
a less powerful mitch maier
which is saying something…however, he will be a good stopgap for the next year or two if and when some of the guys in the minors pan out…an OF of Gordon, Maier, DeJesus, with Blanco filling in is OK for now.
i’ve kinda started to become a mitch maier fan, not because he’s great shakes, but all he’s done is improve since he’s been here, and he really has had to work for his opportunities, so i really respect that. i’m rooting for him to continue to be here and be a part of the future as a 4th OF, for the next few years anyway.

He's 26
I look at him the same as Maier. Not great but they are two young outfielders. We can always get Ankiel and Guillen back if you really want to play the older guys. Might as well see what you have on hand (which I thought was the point of all the moves anyway).
Blanco and Maier are essentially the same type of player but Blanco is a year and a half younger. If you are blah on Blanco I would think by definition you’d be blah on Maier too.

blanco hits like a bad little leaguer in form
he chokes up 2 inches on the bat or so… but he does get on base, so we’ll see if he has any value defensively or can hit enough to be a podsednik, empty obp guy
Todd Haley's kids know more swear words than I do.

I'm not jumping up and down ecstatically
over acquiring Blanco, but it can’t hurt to give him a try in what’s left of this season and in 2011, if he shows he can get on base and field CF. Meanwhile, Maier is having a pretty good season and looks like he can handle the starting job. If Blanco actually works out as a decent player, Dayton has a pleasant dilemma: Who do I trade for more prospects? If not, then not, and we haven’t lost much.

"Care" is too strong of a word
That being said, we could do worse.
Blanco is the type of guy that KC should be taking a chance on
He is 26 and has some chance of improving as a major leaguer. Blanco had a good OBP in his time with the Braves while showing good defensive ability. If a player hits their peak level in the late 20’s then he showed get better over the next few years.
No, he won’t be an AS but he could help KC win games. What do they have to lose? Rick Ankiel and Scott Podsednik’s roster spots & multiple million dollar salary. I’d rather have Blanco.
I think of Gregor like I think most people used to think of DDJ
Hes an average piece who isn’t part of the problem, nor really part of the overall solution. Doesn’t hurt, but doesn’t help. Maybe if he can improve in the next couple of years (.280/.370/.370?) He’ll be worth keeping around. But otherwise he doesn’t really do anyone thing good enough to keep and he doesn’t do everything well enough to keep.
So my feelings are “meh”.

~Trey Hillman, master of understatements.
Basically I think his upside is Daric Barton, or this years Ben Zobrist
Its hard to find Major leaguers with High OBP and basically no power.
I should point out that the person in baseball with the lowest SLG and an OBP over .370 is Daric, and his SLG is actually a little low this year at .396.
So not exactly the most promising comp.
Eventually guys with little pop need to either hit for average(the Ichiro solution) or develop some or else pitchers are just going to go straight after you and watch that OBP plummet.

His Career SLG
Of .309 is based on stats mostly accumulated in his first year in ATL at age 24, so he has plenty of room to improve his .309 career SLG. If he can maintain a .350+ OBP and get his SLG up to .350 he’d be OK for a fourth OF/spot starter. He couldn’t get much playing time in ATL lately, so it’s all SSS since ’08.

I'm not convinced Maier isn't the better player,
AND I am fairly convinced that, come 2012-14 or so, we will need to have a better CF in place to contend than either one of them.
Perfectly OK for either Maier or Blanco to be the 4th OF – but no need for both to be on a roster once we have assembled a contender.
Mitch has been pretty hot since the Ankiel trade – not sure why he sits and Blanco plays. (Of course, not sure why EITHER should sit so Bloomquist can play – but that’s another argument)

Want to add this:
For once, I’m actually glad we have 13 pitchers. Combine that with Yuni out for the weekend, and they won’t be tempted to do something stupid like give up on Kila after 2 games.
As a bonus, if they were to sit Kendall for Brena one game this weekend, with Aviles at SS, we would actually field the best team we could with the given roster for the FIRST AND ONLY time this season!

I posted elsewhere this week about positions where Glass
could help by “augmenting” the influx of young talent by spending some money to fill some apparent holes in the development system. Specifically, I mentioned a middle infielder and a good SP.
I wouldn’t be opposed to adding CF to that list as an alternative. Rany had a nice post today about if the system actually pans out as Goldstein projects, the Royals might legitimately have 20-30m in money to spend. Pick the right 2 guys, and there you go.
Funny how the positions that seem to be (so far) the hardest to fill in the prospect area are the traditional “up the middle” spots of 2B, SS, C, and CF.

I, for one, was a bit disappointed Gathright didn't pan out
I was kindof expecting a .380 OBP (and no power) with some decent speed and decent play in CF. That would have been perfectly competent for me going forward but it just didn’t come to pass.
I was also really disappointed.
I really liked him; however, I didn’t have any expectation that he would be any good. I just hoped.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Moderately interested
If the Royals are going to be successful, one of the ways that will happen is running a bunch of league minimum, salary controlled guys in our fourth and fifth OF slots and middle infield backup types. That’s why trading away guys like Keppinger and Matt Diaz was such a mistake for the Royals…we end up having to pay millions more for the Bloomquists of the world.

I do care alot & I don't want to watch him play!!!
This is why I wasn’t crazy about the ATL trade. Either way Farnsworth & Ankiel were gone at the end of the yr. Blanco is under team control for a few yrs & we have “Home-grown” OF prospects that could offer the same production & have more club house comradery…ie Dyson, Lough, Parraz, even Jai Miller picked up this yr off waivers. I rather not have our players blocked by another Braves never-was.

That’s good D
Everyone who bashes Kendall..... he is a damn good catcher. Very smart behind the plate. He has great BAT CONTROL, which makes him a good top of the order hitter.
