So

I guess officially, Kendall going to the DL is bad news
but in reality, it makes this team better
Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/bhindepmo (follow me, because reloading my twitter page 40 times a day is kind of creepy)
not only does it make this team better
it makes the 2011 team better if 8-10 months can be believed. Is it wrong that I’m hoping for 10?
only catch
do we keep two rookies behind the plate, or do we keep Brayan or a backup around and then dump them for Kendall to come back and do a “Meche 2010” tribute?
Follow me on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/bhindepmo (follow me, because reloading my twitter page 40 times a day is kind of creepy)
Yes, the catch is "does GMDM sign another Kendal to replace the one he lost?"
The answer is “No, of course a competent GM wouldn’t sign an aging catcher to play during a rebuilding season”. Unfortunately, that was also the answer to the first question, “does GMGM sign Kendal to play during a rebuilding season?”

Kendall is done for the season?
I think the poll for tonight should have been how many more wins will the Royals have this season because of that sole fact.

Isn't there some rule
where the Royals are compensated for the shitty play of one, possibly netting us 4-5 more wins?

but, Facebook vs Ned Yost!!!
The Facebook’ers may love him, but Yost doesn’t prognosticate much success for Yuni, considering he usually bats him 7, 8, or 9. (has he ever even batted Yuni as high as #5?)

Wanted to pick baseball in the poll
but my bat speed was too slow (and so was I). Always drove everything to right center just by being late on the pitch.

Solid defensive outfielder, medium to below average bat, though. I was a decent wide receiver, but not as good as I did in baseball.

all league center and defensive end my senior year. Eight man Division 2! I distinctly remember once playing a game of 6 man football because the opposing team didn’t have enough players on the team. What a cluster that was, you shouldn’t play that anywhere other than the park with orange cones and somebodies hat for goal posts.
Eight man was fun to watch, but speed ruled
If one team had 2 fast players, the option was deadly

I'm with you
I was not wired in such a way as to make me a respectable baseball player. I was actually quite terrible.
On the other hand, I was a halfway decent basketball player. I was 6’1 and skinny. I could jump and run. I was an odd set of strengths and weaknesses though. I was an outstanding shotblocker and I really sold out for blocks because they were just about my favorite thing about basketball. But because I was rail thin and I had a bad habit of going after every block, I wasn’t a great defender or rebounder. And on offense I had a very nice assortment of post moves, turnarounds to both sides and a baby hook. And I had a good outside jumper when I was open. But I’ve never been great with the dribble or shooting off the dribble.
Now I’m fat, slow, ground-bound, and strong. I’m good for rebounding and keeping guys out of post position. Getting older isn’t fun.

You know, Kendall situation is doubly bad
First, never want anyone to get injured, so I feel bad that I feel good about this.
Second, it takes an injury to get him out of the lineup instead of a solid DM and Manager deciding that his best days were long ago and not signing him and then not playing him everyday would be better for the team.
Give a man a match, and he'll be warm for a minute, but set him on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

I'm sorry it took a debilitating injury
for the Royals to stop putting one of the worst baseball players in the majors in their lineup every day.
That they kept playing him for another month after he hurt his shoulder is just another indication of how weird this organization really is.
Although he can threaten, he won’t be back from a torn rotator cuff very soon. And so begins the long awaited Jason Kendall moratorium.

A few samples...
James Finney: Would everyone give Kendall a break? The man has had an incredible career. He deserves a lot more respect than what he’s been getting here from a bunch of frustrated Royals fans.
Stephen Burstein: Look how many balls Pena has missed in just the few games he has played…It is not Kendall’s fault with Greinke..it is right between his ears as many scouts are saying.
Donovan Weber: frankly, kendall has been the best catcher we have had in who knows how long.

Rachel Phelps (Royals Management): I think he'll fit right in with our team concept.

Yost on Kendall via kcroyals.com
“His throwing percentage is still remarkable when he got to the point where he couldn’t even raise his arm. He was catching and would have to take his glove to push his arm back into a throwing position and was still throwing runners out,” Yost said. “It just shows you the mentality and the makeup of Jason Kendall. I think he would have played out the year if the training staff hadn’t just hog-tied him and made him have an MRI.”
Apparently, Kendall was allowed to play 2 whole weeks with a completely torn rotator cuff. That has to be complete bullshit. Also loved
He was still throwing runners out.
Obviously, you are not a golfer.
I knew the training staff was for shit
If they “hadn’t just hog tied him and made him have an MRI” we could’ve been without him for more months next season.
Obviously, you are not a golfer.

Just ran the numbers
VVSSS (Very Very Small Sample Size) Alert
I looked at the distance of Kendall’s line drives and flyballs before and after the injury.
Before the injury he average 275 feet and 250 after the time frame. He also went from pulling the ball exclusively to almost hitting it to CF.

Oh, and I was thinking today: Is Yuni turning into a new Miguel Olivo
Sure, he can’t get on base and he does strike out (but nowhere near Olivo)
He can’t field his position but it’s one of scarcity so he has some tangible value, I guess
And now he’s having this odd power surge
well at least Kendall is still gone

I don't know the answer to that
but I notice that Kendall was right at his career average in caught stealing percentage this year — 29%.
yeah i was trying to figure it out on fangraphs.
I see he threw out more runners than any catcher, but that doesnt mean much since he has the most stolen bases on him and played ALOT more than anyone else

gatsby,
I get your point – but honestly, Neyer is 110% dead-on with those comments.
Only thing I would add – Kendall was incredibly selfish, IMHO. He had to suspect he was hurt badly enough to have no chance to contribute, but he evidently wanted to climb up the games caught list. And, I’m sorry – I’m not buying the “mentoring the pitching staff” bullshit. No reason he couldn’t have had the surgery immediately, then volunteered to mentor the pitching staff (AND PENA) from the Royals bench.
Personally, I don’t give a shit if he can rehab it or not – the sooner his Royal career is over, the better.
