I know we rag on Ryan for being an idiot, but I'm beginning to think that Ol' Frank White might even be worse. I understand that the Royals lead the league in old school thinkers but this conversation that went down in the first inning of tonights game hurts my head meat, and Im only a Sabermetrics blue belt.
Ryan: You’ve been talking about a lot lately that you don’t always have to be going to the plate looking to hit a homerun, but there are certain counts when you might want to add something extra
Frank: Well you really do Ryan, I really think back on my career, if I would have, I could have probably easily hit .270-.280 as an average overall, If I had to do it all over again, I might have paid more attention to the batting average, but I wanted to be a productive hitter first, and that means I wanted to be very aggressive on my first two swings and then I go for the single on my second swing. So in the middle 80’s when the team needed offense and they moved me to the 3rd and 4th spot then that’s when I made the adjustment, I went from hitting 13 HR’s to 17 to 22, 22, and then 17. So the average did suffer, but I gave the team what the team needed.
Ryan: It was not your job in that spot in the batting order to have a high average
I don't even feel like I need to rip this apart, because there are readers here who are much better at it than I. I just wanted to get this out there for the 95% of us who aren't watching the games anymore.
