I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
How many people out there
Still really care about the Royals at this point in the season? Not just in a have a night out at the ballpark or watch on TV because nothing else is on kind of way, but really interested.
I bet there are probably only a couple thousand of us left, if that. Just flatlining. Even the facebook comments are mainly the same dipshits going back and forth with each other.

"Things could always be worse." - Buddy Bell
And my interest has really flagged.
I never expected us to contend, though I was hoping for seventy-five wins with a good year, but at the start of the year, I was really fired up. I listened or watched every game, start to finish, and got riled up with every bullpen implosion ad each misses opportunity with RISP.
When these things happen at this point in the season, I just change the channel.
I've Never Been
Able to look away. I listened to or watched every A’s game until they went away, and I followed the Royals as closely as I could from Topeka. Until the internet made this possible I was a box score follower.

IS NED YOST SMART ENOUGH TO BE MANAGER?
I don’t think managers normally make much difference in terms of additional wins, although a particularly bad manager can cost some wins. BUT, in today’s baseball world with the advanced understanding of statistics, fans and the team should be able to expect that a manager is smart enough to understand how to use statistics to manage a team and pitching staff.
Consider the following quotes from Yost:
1. Today, in the Star, he was explaining how “situational hitting average” was important and how Jason Kendall was above “ideal” for the number 2 spot because he had a 750 situational hitting average (which was described as measuring a hitter’s ability to bunt, hit and run, move runners over and drive runners home from 3rd with the infield in and back). This is the same Kendall who hit 236 with a 298 on base percentage when hitting second. Aside from the obvious small sample size problem of any such “average,” it reflects the antiquated view that OBP is not important for the number 2 hitter. Now, Yost is putting in Maier as the number 2 hitter, which might not be a bad idea to give him a chance to show if he can hit, but Yost’s reason is because Maier has an 830 situational hitting average. Arghhhh!!
2. When he batted Bloomquist third a week or so ago, he said that he did not think it made much difference where batters hit in the order.
3. When he was asked about how he would use Soria, he said that his use of him would be governed by the silly save rule, i.e., when there was a save opportunity, he would use him.
by Kansas City Oracle on Sep 5, 2010 2:07 PM EDT reply actions
There Is Only
One “situation” in baseball; dude on the mound wants to get you out, dude with the bat wants to hit the ball hard. That’s it. That’s the list.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.
by philofthenorth on Sep 5, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I WOULD MODIFY "SITUATION"
Guy with bat wants to avoid making an out – which includes either taking a walk or hitting the ball hard.
But my point about Yost is how in today’s world can a manager honestly believe in “situational hitting average” when it is based on small samples and the proposition of productive outs?

Listening to Baseball on Radio Can Be Great
I grew up listening to Harry Carey, Jack Buck, Mel Allen and other great announcers who made radio listening a great experience.
Kansas City just has a lousy announcer in Denny Matthews, who shows no interest in the game and never understood that his job was to be the eyes of the listener. He refuses to provide a detailed or timely description of the action. At the end of a close game, his delivery suggests that he could not care less about how it turns out and he often is catching up with the play after the fact.
Among his many shortcomings is the fact that when something exciting happens on the field (mostly home runs at big times), he is silent for up to about 30 seconds leaving the listener to hear the crowd noise and nothing else. That approach is okay on TV where the viewed can see what is happening. It is absurd on radio. Is there any worse radio than listening to crowd noice? Oh well, hopefully Denny (who is a nice guy and knowledgeable aobut baseball and has a great voice) will retire before the Royals become good.
ps Do you know that Denny actually called the greatest play in Royals history – Sundberg sliding in safe on Dane Iorg’s base hit to win Game 6 of the 1985 series — with the words “the game is over.”

I find it hilarious that Betancourt has .5 WAR this season...
But Ankiel has .2 WAR this season as a Royal.

I know...I don't even mean the feeling can be backed up. But that's how it "seems" to me. Kinda like how it felt this season like Billy's a little down, but when you look at the numbers you realize you're wrong.

I'm Oddly OK
With Meche in this role. It’s a seriously undervalued part of the game.

I hate that his time here has come to this -
- due to the front office. BUT…we have to deal w/the reality of the situation. And if the alternative is paying him $$$ next season for nothing, than I’m OK w/the relief thing.

Good point.
I think Gil will be really successful in the role. I just wish it didn’t cost the GDP of Bolivia.

Yep.
Although, I do look forward to the day when we don’t throw the phrase “sunk cost” around as much as we have the last 2-3 seasons.
