If Joe can paint a house in three hours and Sam can paint the same house in five hours, how long will it take to paint it together?

That is correct, good sir.

I have a question, is the moneyball-Oakland-2002-draft more successful than the other team’s picks?
I am reading the book recently

by Yamfun Cheng Kamfun on Sep 9, 2010 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

They did OK with the money they had.

Oakland was really against H.S. pitchers and that draft was loaded with some pretty decent ones

I would take either the Titans or the Packers

I think I’d lean toward the Titans. Oakland may be slightly better, but the Titans should be stronger with a renewed Vince Young under center.

I don't like the Pack being only 3 point favorites and on the road

I am really considering the Titans. The Bears, Titans and Giants all have the highest spread at 6.5 points

Dolphins or Bears

I think the Bills are going to be horrible this year.

I don’t believe in Vince Young and I think Oakland will be better than people think.

I don't know for MLB.com

but at the team store definitely at the end of the season, or best of all the post-season tour of the stadium they usually do the first week or two of October when most of the store is 75% off. You can probably get the Podsednik and Ankiel jerserys for super cheap right now, though.

$2225.27 a day

Based off what I think is the minimum salary (Dusty Hughes is on 405K a year according to Cots, so I went with that) divided by 182, which is the official season length (though a service year is 172 days)

Relievers usually have lower ERA

So why is there still these 100 pitches starters? Why isn’t each game pitched with 9 relief-level pitchers?

by Yamfun Cheng Kamfun on Sep 9, 2010 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

I think there's room for change with how pitchig staffs are run

but it would never happen

not all relievers or anything like that… but tweaks to rotation size and definetly bullpen usage

I could see a move to a two-plus inning setup guy

The Rays were moving toward using JP Howell this way until injuries got in the way (including his own). On the Royals, Kyle Davies has potential to fill this type of role — former starter with the stamina to go multi-innings, usable changeup to keep opposite-handed hitters honest, and the likely boost in velocity from pitching in shorter stints should offset his mediocre command (which is why he is not very good as a starter).

There has already a move away from strict LOOGYs, as teams have figured out that it is better to have a pitcher who can do well against both lefties and righties rather one a guy who is really good against one but horrible against the other.

by BillyMojo on Sep 11, 2010 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

With Starters Pitching

Fewer innings, the long reliever is becoming increasingly valuable. I don’t think you can afford to have crappy starters fill this role, and running out 4 one inning guys burns up a pen pretty fast. This is why I think guys like Collins and Coleman (and probably Davies) are becoming a necessity for a good pitching staff. It’s not a sin to groom these guys for this role rather than shoehorning them into the starting job until they fail. The fact that they lack a popular stat, like wins and saves, to use in contract negotiations should be less of a factor as advanced stats become more accepted.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Sep 11, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

The improvement relievers see is because they throw harder and only see a batter once (vice 2 to 4) for a starter

I think there can be more 3-4 innings pitched and then bring in someone else for 3-4 innings.

- .-. ..- … – / – …. . / .—. .-. - .. . … …

by Jeff Zimmerman on Sep 9, 2010 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I played on a team where we were down on pitchers becuase of injuries.

We each threw three innings every two days. So it would take us at least 3 pitchers a game but you’re throwing every third day… if you like W’s, you won’t like this, but if you aren’t to big of a stats guy, this is a good strategy at times…

I remember reading or hearing an idea.

Why not have 6 ‘starters’ that each pitch 3-4 innings every three days. That way they don’t go through a line up twice and you could (if you have the arms) flip-flop back and forth starting a lefty and then a righty. Then with 6 starters you should be able to pitch into the 7-8th every night and let the closer take over and finish if need be.

I always kind of liked the idea.

by Chyladin on Sep 9, 2010 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it would be great

If you had no “ace” type like Greinke (think early 00s Royals). I would also advocate having a knuckler for mop up innings and spot starts, and/or a two-way guy like Brian Anderson who can eat some mop up innings.

I like the reclamation project strategy

a la Betemit, Bullington, etc. Low-risk, high-reward with the ability to pull the plug and not kill the payroll. I suppose that would also include guys like Callaspo (or Getz and Fields, ugh) who are borderline prospects but haven’t had a chance to really prove whether they’re for real or not.

What will they do?

1. Sign OF Willie Harris
2. Sign P Ian Snell
3. Trade Alex Gordon for crap

What should they do? Don’t know yet, I’ll have to look into it.

Yes, Boardwalk Empire gets me all a-tingly, but I don’t have HBO. It and Eastbound and Down might be a reason for me to subscribe though.

I was excited about Rubicon, but quit after three episiodes due to boredom and frustrated at all the stupid cliches. C’mon AMC, you’re better than that. I am intrigued by “The Event”, but I am wary of investing time in it if the Event is something stupid or they devolve into a Lost-type “we don’t know how to end this so we’ll drag it out as long as possible dropping clues that have no meaning.”

I am a Will Arnett fan, but his new show looks terrible. So…yea, this fall lineup looks really, really terrible.

The new outfielder has to do one thing — and only one thing — really well, like have plus-plus speed or plus-plus power.

I could see the Royals picking up a guy with a decent bat who could play 2B and 3B — there are always 2B types available for one year deals on the cheap.

Here's a tricky two-parter:

1) What is your current optimum line-up for the Royals?
More importantly, 2) what positions still need upgrades in order to be serious contenders? I take it SS and Kendall are obvious, but what else?

Besides SS and C

DH or 1B, 2B, 3B, CF or RF, 3 SP, 4 RP.

It's easier to say who is good enough?

DDJ is fine
Billy is fine at either 1B or DH

Greinke
Soria
Tejeda
Hochevar toward the back end

Beyond that…

I guess Mitch and Willie are Ok bench guys, but you wouldn’t them starting.

by kcbottom9th on Sep 9, 2010 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I also believe Mitch is a great 4th OFer.

But you want someone better starting. Has Betemit been good enough with the bat to be fine? Is Gordon good enough in the outfield? I still think Kila can be useful, I just haven’t figured out how yet. Other than that, I’m not sure who else I’d keep for a “playoff contender” team.

by powderbluepower on Sep 9, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I would be okay with Billy at 1B and Betemit at DH

I don’t think anyone on the team is the current answer and the minors is somewhat bare here of high talent unless someone moves position (Hosmer or Myers)

by Jeff Zimmerman on Sep 9, 2010 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

#1 - I am not going to figure out true ability - I am just using this year's numbers, but here is how it should go according to The Book

Top 3 hitters in the 1,2 and 4 spot – Using wOBA for the season and ignoring Fields for now it is Butler, Betemit and Maier
Highest SLG in the 4 hole, highest OBP in the 1 hole so: 1= Butler, 2 Maier and 4 = Betemit

Next 2 best hitters in the 3 and 5 holes – Gordon and Betancout with the highest SLG in the 5 hole. 3 = Gordon and 5 = Betancourt

The rest should be decending order 6= Aviles 7= Blanco 8= Bloomquist (DH) 9 = Pena]

So
Butler
Maier
Gordon
Betemit
Yuni
Aviles
Blanco
Bloomquist
Pena

depends on what you mean by "serious contenders"

If that’s “being able to challenge the Twins” then the OF is not so far off (DDJ, Gordon, Maier, Blanco/Dyson). I’m OK with a 1B/DH combo of Butler, Kila, Betemit, Fields (2 or 3 of those). An average player at 3B would be nice, but not as important if SS is improved. I believe Pena/May could hold the fort at C. Plus two good-but-not-great SP to add to Greinke (so that the 2 -3 -4 would be some combination of Hochevar/new guy/new guy, with Davies/Banny/Chen at 5 and/or spot starters).

The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Sep 9, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

so, in your mind,

we’re just a 3B, SS and 2-3 starting pitchers away?

by powderbluepower on Sep 9, 2010 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

from challenging the Twins, maybe

(That does sound a bit crazy, though. And I’m not usually a homer.)

My theorizing does assume that Gordon is at least a decent/good hitter/fielder, and same for Aviles – neither of which are sure things. Am I crazy to think that this lineup couldn’t at least stay in the race until September?

9 Gordon
8 Maier
7 DDJ
6 new SS (Yunel Escobar, for instance)
5 Betemit (or someone else that can put up 2 to 3 WAR)
4 Aviles
3 Butler/Kila
2 Pena/May
DH Butler/Kila/Betemit/Fields

SP1 Greinke
2 Good starter (a la 2007/8 Gil Meche?)
3 Hochevar
4 Decent starter (a la 2008 Davies?)
5 Davies/Banny/Chen

But since you asked, it looks pretty bleak, at least for the major networks. As an Arrested Development fan, I was excited for Running Wilde, but the early buzz is not good. Outsourced looks horrible. Raising Hope has been mentioned as having potential, so I might check that out.

I usually hate any cops/lawyers/doctors shows, so that exclude virtually all of the hour long shows. I might give The Event fifteen minutes to get me interested. I might do the same for Hawaii 5-0, even though it is a cop show but, hey, Hawaii.

That’s usually the cause and it makes you swing UP at the ball rather than staying flat through the ball. Move the knob of the bat to where the contact point is going to be….

I am writing a thing on this for my blog but

Should the Royals sign Barrett Loux?

Barrett Loux was the 6th overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft. However, he failed his physical and through a turn of events, was granted free agency by MLB. This means that he can sign with anyone. He can sign with the Royals.

The Diamondbacks had a $2 million deal with Loux before he failed a physical. And it is a dangerous injury situation for him. The MRI in fact revealed two injuries. Loux has a torn labrum which can end a career and an injury that Gil Meche is currently fighting. The other injury was taken care of in 2009 but is showing signs of resurfacing in a more complicated manner. You see, Barrett had bone chips removed from his elbow in 2009 and the wear in his elbow is a concern about a Tommy John surgery fairly soon. And these injuries for a pitcher can both be career ending, but for Loux to sign and need both of these surgeries in the future is scary.

Barrett had a great career at Texas A & M. He was considered a solid player and very good pitcher. Loux threw in the 90s and is able to touch 95. Loux is reported to have an average curve which he has struggled to throw since his elbow surgery. Loux also throws a change up but it is also considered average. But his mechanics are good and Loux throws with a description of ease. He is 6’5" and 220 lbs. A great build for a pitcher, but scary injuries with a history of injuries.

Depends on the offseason acquisitions. If we don’t bring in any willy taveras types, it’s possible that we could field lineups next year that, while not necessarily likely to score a ton of runs, will only contain one or two players I hate, as opposed to the five+ that were standard this year.

Let's just trust the process.

by trusttheprocess on Sep 9, 2010 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I thnk this will have a TON to do with it.

If we’re actually following players who have a chance to be impact players down the road (i.e., NOT Kendal, Pods, AnKiel, etc.), it will be fun to see Pena, May, Kila, Blanco, Maier, Gordon, Aviles try to hit their stride as ML regulars (even Getz, Fields, and Betemit).

And there is a wild card in

JarROD Dyson – he may hit like Gaithright, but he can actually FIELD (I’m told). He may not have many believers that he can succeed at the ML level, but he should be fun to watch, even if it’s just to see if he can put up 2+ WAR based on defense and baserunning alone.

The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Sep 9, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Dyson would likely need to be the best defensive centerfielder in recent baseball history

to come close to being a 2 WAR player. Dyson would need a breakthrough to hit like Gathright. In the minors, Gathright has something like 50 points of OPS on Dyson, and even more in the upper minors.

by Gopherballs on Sep 9, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying he would definitely be able to, but it would be fun to watch him try

sort of a Njyer Morgan 2010 (wOBAf .286) but with much better defense (and maybe better baserunning) might get him to 2 WAR

Probably not

I’m not up to speed on the latest in Kosovo, but I notice that the International Court of Justice issued an “advisory opinion” in July holding that Kosovo’s declaration of independence did not violate international law. This is a positive step toward becoming a state, but I believe the fact the International Court had to issue such an advisory opinion shows that the government in Kosovo lacks the de facto sovereignty and exclusivity of jurisdiction generally found in an internationally recognized sovereign State.

I heard about the advisory opinion, but it ignores one important detail. The only reason the area has develop any independent administrative structure is because the UN came in and set it up. However, as part of the agreement with Serbia that allowed the UN to come into its country and do this, the UN agreed that it would not support, encourage, or allow Kosovo to leave Serbia and become independent. If Kosovo is allowed to become independent why would any other country ever let the UN come in if they run the risk of have chunks of territory carved out of them?

And what's to stop Québec one day

Doing exactly the same? And what right would Canada (who recognize Kosovo) have to object if they did? They came within a hair of doing it in 1995, it’ll come up again at some point.

That was much discussed up here. Spain have refused for a similar reason, they don’t to legitimize Catalan and Basque separatists.

by kcbottom9th on Sep 9, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

All Questions Answered.

What’s to stop Quebec? The Canadian military.

What right would Canada have to object? The right of might makes right. Kosovo has only be able to move forward because the USA is backing it. I think the USA would side with Canada to keep Quebec in Canada (unless Quebec wanted to move on over to our side {j/k})

In the greater sense, Quebec actually has a better argument for independence than Kosovo. A number of definitions about States take into account the Nation-State structure that essentially seeks to make States for each ethnic group. In the case of Kosovo, that land is actually traditionally Serbian and the population has been more of a 50-50 split between Albanians/Serbs until the last 20 years or so were large numbers of Serbs left because of the war, Albanians moved in, and after the UN step in, more Serbs left because of oppression under the ruling Albanians.

With Quebec though, there is a principle that gives weight to longstanding political control and since Quebec has been a part of Canada for a long time, the academic side would frown upon an move toward secession because of the destabilizing precedent it creates.

If RBI isn't an important stat to consider when evaluating a player's offensive statistics,

tell me why.

And then…..how much more important are RUNS when evaluating a player’s offensive statistics? And why?

by Crooow on Sep 9, 2010 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

Both rely hugely on other players

You can be the greatest hitter in history, but if you don’t have people on base ahead of you you are going to have crappy RBI totals unless you hit record breaking numbers of HR’s.

And the same in reverse. You could have a .500 OBP but if you have TPJ, Luis Hernandez and Mario Mendoza batting behind you you are not going to cross home plate very much. But if you get on base at a .300 clip and have Pujols, Bonds and Ruth following up you will score shitloads of runs. Who is the better player?

Any stat that purports to measure a players contribution that relies so massively on another player’s performance is a flawed stat.

I'm convinced of the limited usefulnes of the RBI

But, is there anything in the Saber stats that take into account sac fly’s that score runs?

by Chyladin on Sep 9, 2010 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Other than the sac fly stat itself?

The linear weights for outfield flies take into account that runners may advance and score on a flyball out (unlike a strikeout).

Really, though, sac flies are so infrequent (Billy Butler leads the majors with a grand total of 8) that they are inconsequential.

by Gopherballs on Sep 9, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

it does have limited usefulness

In that if you are in some theoretical situation where you have to pick a good hitter and that is the only stat you have, it is probably better than picking someone totally at random.

But in reality, with the easy availability of granular data nowadays, it is just totally obsolete.

by PopeSoria on Sep 9, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Just replying to all of the above.

I wasn’t necessary looking for a specific Saber stat dealing with RBI. I was more looking to see if it is included beneficially in any of the already existing stats. Granted a sac fly or ground out that scores a runner is not as good as a hit, but it is better than a strikeout. I wondered if it was taken into account.

Yes, it is rather insignificant because they are small in volume. However, HBP are included in OBP and thus OPS and some other stats. I assume it would not impact any stat by more than a few points and I would never want a hitter because he is good at it. I was just curious.

I think most smartphones

are daily chargers. Unless you’re not using many of the smartphone functions, or always use WiFi. Being forced to use the cell network for texting and data, plus the large, bright screens for smartphones just leads to big battery drains.

Run advanced task killer immediately after starting up, since everything seems to launch at startup. Also run it after you finish any memory intensive apps (Opera, Browser, etc).

Even with that though, it’s still nearly an every-other-day charger.

why are old stats like BA so crazy

My stories a lot like yours only more interesting because it involves robots!

by AvilesRotY on Sep 9, 2010 5:17 PM EDT reply actions

other stats tell you a lot more about the player and more accurately about their actual value to scoring (or preventing) runs

Looking at BA only leads to stupid conclusions like Yuniesky Betancourt (.262) has been a better hitter than Jose Bautista (.261) this year.

In reality, all of Bautista’s extra base hits and walks have made him about 50 runs (roughly 5 wins) more valuable than Betancourt on offense.

BA has some uses as a component stat, but at a minimum, it should always be used in connection with OBP and slugging — the triple slash lines (AVG/OBP/SLG).

I read an ESPN article this morning poo-pooing the Rays chances at success for the rest of the season

I tuned out (not unexpectedly) as soon as I got to this line

Yes, they’ve scored 57 runs in their past 10 games, but Tampa Bay is 23rd in the majors in batting average and 25th in hits
Sure, a higher batting average would be better, but how about walks and OBP? how about slugging? Ignoring those is like ignoring 2/3 of the issue. The writer chose to focus on batting average even though he mentions the fact that they still score a lot of runs.

The only people who really know where [the edge] is are the ones who have gone over it.

by SagehenMacGyver47 on Sep 10, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

If BA and hits were the most important things, we’d be a playoff team. The Rays have 141 fewer hits than the Royals but have scored 132 more runs (BTW – Tampa is 3rd in the majors and in their own division in runs scored).

No more so than a law should be passed concerning the Mosque in New York.

We live in the USA because it affords us freedoms that aren’t allowed in other countries and those freedoms should extend to actions that would looked down upon in other countries.

I don’t want to defend this guy because I don’t agree with what he is doing. But I want to know where the ACLU is? Where are the libertarians in this country? Why is it okay to do offensive things to people that you know won’t attack you but wrong to do it them if the people will attack you?

Where are the people that advocate for legalized drugs? How about same-sex advocates? There are lots of people that think the people opposing the Mosque in New York are Islamophobic bigots, should we be concerned that the legal actions of private citizens (those building the mosque) might cause violence and thus they should be stopped?

Again, I do not condone burning any books and I don’t want to do anything that would be offensive to Muslims because I have friends that are Muslims and I would like to keep it that way.

Put quite simply, the Federal Government is there to protect us from violent attacks that originate outside of the United States. It is this protection that is supposed to protect our right to exercise our Constitutional Rights in this country.

I am encouraged

That at least FOX News and most mainstream conservatives – even Sarah Palin’ – were pretty quick to condemn the Koran burning stunt.

But of course, they’re still against a Muslim community center two blocks from 9/11 for reasons that seem unclear to me other than political points.

Personal Question... seeking answers...

For my birthday this year, my wife has given me tickets to Cubs games on Sep 25 and 26 (playing the Cards, no less). She did this because she knows that I have never been to Wrigley, and also she is an exceptionally good wife. She wound up getting tix on the first base side for saturday and tickets to one of the rooftops across the street on sunday.

So, I know I should take this to Bleed Cubbie Blue, but they don’t have an open thread today, and RR does. (Plus I don’t really know any of those people). Anyway, what should I know before going to the games? What should I be sure not to miss? (both in the park and in Wrigleyville?) Is it safe to show up in my Greinke jersey and a Royals cap? Is it legal in Wrigleyville to throw stuff at WhiteSox fans? Etc. etc. etc….

Any advice appreciated.

by kcemigre on Sep 9, 2010 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

With the caveat that it's probably been 5 years since I went to a game at Wrigley

I am not sure where you are staying, but if possible take the train to the Addison stop. You get a little thrill just seeing the park from the train, and perhaps more importantly, there is no real place to park, as Wrigley Field is in the middle of neighborhood. The only things to see in the neighborhood are the bars — the Cubby Bear across the street from the home plate gate is probably the most well known. As a late season meaningless game, the bars should not be too crowded (although the Cards fans tend to invade). Inside, there is not much room to walk around — the main concourse is basically the area under the stands behind the infield, and there is no access to the famed bleachers. Cubs fans tend to be happy drunks, but can turn quickly and start throwing cups of beer when agitated. Cards fans are more likely to give you a bad time about the Royals gear — most Cubs fans probably have no idea who Greinke is or that Kansas City has a team. The rivalry with the White Sox is pretty one sided, with the White Sox fans despising the Cubs and the Cubs fans relatively indifferent (in a condescending way) toward the White Sox.

by Gopherballs on Sep 9, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

So...

…if I’ve survived games at Busch while wearing Royals gear, I should be ok at Wrigley?

That sounds about right.

We’ll fly in to Midway and take the train to a B&B my wife picked out (she has to have some fun, too) that’s supposed to be near Wrigleyville. I suspect we’re in walking distance of the park from there, but I’m sure we’ll also go by on the train at some point, since we’ll be nearby and have no car…

You'll be fine in your Royals gear.

I was just there last month and I can tell you that half the place if full of baseball fans, and the other is jus a bunch of people checking it off of their bucket list. Kind of annoying, but if you know it going in, you’ll be ok. One thing you definately need to do is walk all the way around the stadium and just check the are out. It’s pretty neat. For everything that the park lacks in new neat stuff like the K, it makes up for in nostalgia. The whole Wrigleyville area is pretty cool and the t-shirt vendors are hilarious. My favorite that I picked up is the one that says “Pujols mows my lawn.” Make sure you drink Old Style while at the park too for the full effect.

Well, I suppose I’ll fit right in, since I’m stradling that line on this trip. While I always love a good game, I’m not honestly going to be too worked up over Cubs vs. Cards… but I am psyched to see Wrigley.

Nobody had suggested any food… looking at recomendations from Cubs fans (in the BCB archive), I see lots of BBQ rec’s. I don’t plan on going from KC to Chicago to eat BBQ. And, there’s only so many hotdogs and deep dish pizzas a person can eat, so… any suggestions on eateries near Wrigleyville or elsewhere in the windy city?

by kcemigre on Sep 10, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Chicago probably has the best quality and quantity of ethnic food in the country outside of New York

If you like Italian (not just deep dish), go to Little Italy (near University of Illinois-Chicago).

If you like Asian (all kinds really, not just Chinese), go to New Chinatown on the north side (Argyle stop, I think, on the red line) or Old Chinatown on the south side (Cermak/Chinatown stop) — although this used to not be the best of neighborhoods.

If you like Indian food, go to Devon Avenue (near the Loyola stop on the red line) or there were some good ones near the Belmont stop on the red line. My favorite was the Moti Mahal, but I am not sure if it is still around.

Basically, if there is any type of ethinic food that you like or might want to try, this is your chance.

We ate at one of the bars in Wrigleyville before the game.

I think it was called JOhnny Barley’s or something beerish and witty like that. It was just down the street from the main gate to the ballpark. I loved the park and had a great time. I could give two shits about either the Cubs or the Reds which is who we saw that day. What we did see though, were a ton of homeruns which is like speaking spanish to Royal fans. My wife is from Chicago so I had the low down on all the other stuff too. It’s cheesy, but you’ll need to go to any of the Harry Careys sports bar and grill type places. Also one of my favorites in town there is the Weber Grill down town. It’s a steak place and everything there is actually prepared on Weber grills. Kinda neat and good food. It’s at the downtown Westin, not the one by Navy Pier. Have fun. My last two games of the year are (gag) Cards/Padres on the 19th, and Royals/Rays on the 2nd. My kid wants the freaking sluggie.
