Need help in a debate. Is AC/DC considered a "popular" band in mainstream America. They clearly have a devoted fanbase, but as a musical act, are they popular in mainstream America?
I vote that they are not, and have never been, a "popular" musical act in America b/c they have never had any "hit" singles in the U.S., as far as the Billboard Top 100 goes. They sell out their concerts b/c they have a very loyal fanbase, but I believe that fanbase is too small to be considered popular, as their songs rarely appear outside of classic rock stations or football stadiums. Indeed, I'd wager that AC/DC songs are most familiar to those who go to sporting events..and that many of these people couldn't even name the band.
Thus, I believe a couple of their songs are well-known from sporting events, but they aren't truly a popular band b/c they have never experienced truly mainstream success in the U.S
