Angels trade for Vernon Wells and his contract
DM is no longer the luckiest GM this week. He lucked into saving $12 million. The Blue Jays just lucked into saving $80 million.

5:22pm: Rosenthal hears from a source that Toronto will send Vernon Wells to the Angels in exchange for Napoli. (Twitter link) Wells is under contract through 2014, earning $23MM in 2011 and then $21MM in each of the remaining three years. Wells would presumably take over in center field for L.A. now that Torii Hunter has been shifted to right, though Hunter (-6.2 UZR/150) was a bit better than Wells (-7.0 UZR/150) in center last season.
BOOM! ROASTED!
If the Angels like Wells for $23 million, they're gonna love Kendall for $3.75 million
Since they now have a hole at catcher, perhaps we can wrestle Scott Downs away from them. Make it happen, Dayton!
batter nine you sucky
This is awful
Is there something I’m missing? This can’t be right.
What's crazy is that there are some GMs out there who think the Angels are a franchise to emulate.

just a STUNNINGLY bad trade
you give away Napoli for the worst contract in the game?
just… amazingly dumb
While I'm certainly not going to defend this trade...
…they’ve been to the playoffs 6 of the past 9 seasons, including a WS title. I think every non Yankee/Red Sox fan would take that in a heartbeat….so I don’t know if I can trash the franchise too much…though this move is pretty atrocious.
If Wells would move to LF, he might have some value to them though.

I think they are going to be 3rd place in that division for the foreseeable future
Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.
Possibly, but they've still got some a pretty solid rotation. It wouldnt' surprise me to see them bounce back and contend this year.

Anything can happen
Getting older, worse, and more expensive has been a proven strategy for the Royals the last few years, too.

They clearly need to rebuild a bit at some point, but I don't think they are staring a lost season in the face either.

Other than the Rangers, the AL West is pretty mediocre
And hey, I’d definitely put the Angels ahead of the Mariners at this point. They’ll still be in there, but this move makes them worse.

I think that Oakland is going to win that division this year
Really like that pitching staff, just don’t know if the offense will have enough punch. I will be rooting for DDJ to succeed there though.
Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.
they have a shot
Beltre was a huge addition for the Rangers, though. They really need a DH — they should sign Branyan for cheap, then have “Utility Young” spell him and (chuckle) Moreland against LHPs. That would give them another win.
I Like the As as a dark-horse contender, too. But I said that last season.

The things that scare me about the Rangers in this order are:
1. The starters
2. Ron Washington is still their manager
3. They are not going to surprise anyone this year
Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.
I would think...
that lineup will keep them in contention throughout the summer and they will make another move at the trading deadline to get an ace.

This ain't football. The "they aren't going to surprise people" theory is non-existant in baseball.
There’s no “sneaking up on people in baseball” over a 162 game schedule.

Is Washington a bad manager?
I tend to think of him as pretty good.

They were under Stoneman
Reagins is totally unimpressive. First the Kazmir trade, now this. I hope the Royals at least offered them Meche for Trout.

Even Dayton Moore is having a good laugh over this one.
I guess sometimes it's not so great to have an owner that will spend money
This trade is laughably bad.
Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.
Napoli alone would have been too much for Wells and his contract.
But, to add in Rivera? What the hell are the Angels thinking? Awful.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.
-- Source Unknown
Actually, getting rid of Rivera and his contract is something the Jays "had" to take on
Heck, if neither Napoli nor Rivera ever take another MLB AB, the Jays win this trade by a lot.

I don't think Napoli stays in Toronto very long
What with Arencibia pretty much ready. I think AA likes to stockpile and worry about roster construction later.
Would you want Napoli here? His defense is not Kendall Approved, but he’d become our best hitter. I think Napoli has two years left til FA.

Not interested in Napoli
want to see what B. Pena can do. How would Napoli be our best hitter? He’s not as good as Butler
Napolii isn't as good a hitter as Butler
Bit I sure wouldn’t say “no” to him for the sake of Brayan.

How are the Jays so freakin lucky? First Rios now Wells that is BS. Are teams thinking that
the Blue Jays are operating on the Euro and they get some kind of money discount by doing this crap.
Checkout Royals minor league notes at www.14for77.blogspot.com
Yes but the only reason that the Jays needed to be that lucky is because they gave
marginal guys outrageous contracts.
Jamie freakin Wright, nuff said.
I wouldn't say marginal
and while the Wells contract was an overpay , the Rios contract was perfectly reasonable at the time, and other than his disastrous 2009, he’s lived up to is so far.

I almost had a heart attack
Because I read it as “Royals trade for Vernon Wells”. Made me do a doubletake
batter nine you sucky
hmmm
well look at the money that Crawford got.
Wells with his 4 WAR and Crawford’s 6.9. Yes, Crawford is a better player, but Wells rebounded well, and his annual hit and overall payout is far less than Crawford would have cost them.
Wells in LA, could be interesting.
he was worth 3 WAR total the 3 previous years
