The Facebook War

An interesting discussion erupted yesterday on the KC Royals Facebook page. The Royals announced there that they had just been named Baseball America's top farm system. This caused the usual doomsayers to come out in force and spout the usual negatives on the Royals, the team is a joke, they'll just trade the players when they get to the major leagues and they'll all just fizzle out when they get to the major leagues. Someone even mentioned the Royals were nothing but a farm team for MLB. This prompted several Royals' bloggers to jump in and try to defend the organization. Now it's no secret that the Royals have some very talented prospects in their system and the future of the organization looks very bright, but convincing the masses appears to be an uphill battle.

I follow the bloggers that got involved, guys like Nick Scott and Clint Scoles. These are guys that know the Royals inside out. They follow and write on the Royals almost daily. These are also guys who participated in the recent Digital Digest and got to interview Moore, Yost, and several players. What I found interesting was their frustrating attempt to educate the casual fan on the quality of the players in the Royals system and the future success expected at the major league level. There was a lot of criticism for all the trades made recently. What the casual fan is missing here is these trades are all steps in a process to position the team for success in the future. I guess you can't expect the casual fan to follow the Royals like some of us do but I applaud these guys for their effort.
