Minor league questions

  1. Will Cheslor Cuthbert be moved to the outfield sometime this year?
  2. Is Mike Montgomery still an elite prospect?
  3. Will Lorenzo Cain start the year in AAA?
  4. Does Kelvin Herrera have starter stuff or does he look more like a bullpen guy?
  5. Do we still have a top 5 farm system?

I gave my guesses on 1-3 in the other thread

4. I think any good reliever can make a good closer. And I think he’s got good enough stuff to be a good reliever.

5. Maybe, but probably not. More likely somewhere in the 6-10 range from what I’ve been reading.

the Best 6-10 Range System EVER. Right??

Cuthbert is supposed to be a solid defensive 3B, particularly given his youth and time to develop. I’d be very surprised if they moved him to the OF.

As for Cain, they need to make something happen in the OF this off-season. The starting pitching is too bad to have 4 starter quality outfielders. I’m rooting for a Melky trade because I think Cain would make a huge difference to the team’s defense.

Keith Law still had them ranked 3 after the draft... I haven't seen anything since.

I would think that no, Cuthbert will stay at 3B. He’s described by Sickels as having questionable defense but by a member of the Texas Farm Review in his comments as having no issues defensively. I’ve never seen him but I have heard he is solid defensively. I would think he will be just fine. Especially as a kid who is actually younger than Bubba.

To me Monty is still elite. He has the best stuff of any pitcher in our system. He just has the mechanical flaw. He drifts toward the plate and doesn’t harness his energy well. Otherwise known as leaking.

I think Cain starts in AAA.

Kevlin was a starter but couldn’t stay healthy. Hence the bullpen move last year. When he was healthy as a starter, he was good. He looked great and had great stuff. But as a smaller guy with a thin frame the pen might be best so we can have him for a full season.

We have a top 5 system in my mind. We still have a LOT of depth and a lot of talent at the top. Most of those guys are slightly farther away than Hosmer/Moustakas/Salvador/Giavotella/Duffy were but we still have talent.

I don’t think Cuthbert moves off 3B til he absolutely has to. If Edwin Encarnacion is still playing 3B, Cuthbert can pass as a 3B. And Cuthbert can get better. I don’t see him spending his whole career at 3B though (seems few 3B spend their whole careers there).

Yea, I think Monty is still elite.

I think Cain begins the year as the 4th OF.

Don’t know about Herrera.

Yea, I think its still top five. Tampa Bay, Texas and Toronto are ahead of us, but I can’t think of any other systems that stand out above ours.

Keith Law after the draft had it

Tampa Toronto Kansas City… Of course we have also called up a few more guys since then.

1. Not unless he puts on a lot of weight and can’t move laterally come the spring. Eventually he might move to LF, but not in 2012.
2. Yes.
3. Predicting the moves of Dayton Moore is next to impossible. I’m going to say something happens with Melky and Cain starts the year in CF with the Royals.
4. Apparently with him he has the stuff but theyre worried about injuries.
5. I don’t know. It’s somewhere in the Top 10 with Tampa, Texas, Seattle, Arizona, Washington, Atlanta, and Toronto somewhere in the mix.

by BeauJackson on Oct 19, 2011 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

1. Only if he gets out of Wilmington before July.
2. Yes. Stuff.
3. I think there’s a good chance Cain gets traded.
4. Starter stuff. Bullpen durability.
5. Not this year, but there’s potential still to be the top farm system again in 2012. We have a lot of high upside talent. I think 5 sounds about right to me given our promotions, but I think most evaluators will over-react and put us closer to 10.

by WURoyal on Oct 19, 2011 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

1. No. Not sure why they would move him, I haven’t heard much about his defense one way or the other.

2. Yes. Still young.

3. No. I have a hunch he’ll be in KC. Melky traded.

4. Sounds like he’s a bullpen guy due to durability issues.

5. Don’t know, I don’t get too into that.

by Rufus R. Jones on Oct 19, 2011 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

no, hell yes, no, starter (another Soria),

Depends entirely on how you weight the top 100 and how much credit you give for depth. I see the Royals as still a standard deviation above the mean, or in other words, even if they are not top five, they are in the top tier.

On Cain I think there is about an 75% chance he does not start in AAA.

1. The Royals could decide to split time among the 4 outfielders
2. The Royals could treat him as the kid in camp who doesn’t get to play much
3. Gordon, Melky, or Frenchy, or Cain could be injured
4. They start him in AAA

I know, partially platooning Frenchy in option one is too intelligent for the Royals to pull off.

Frenchy beats the living crap out of lefties

and should always play RF whenever we’re facing a lefty. Against righties, I’d rather have Cain in center and Melky at right, since a) Melky can probably play right field better than center and b) Melky hits righties better than lefties.

OT: Another lefty-masher we should think about picking up is Kelly Shoppach. He’s an OK veteran defensive catcher, and they’re probably not going to pick up his option. Completely useless against righty pitchers, but if we want a veteran other than Brayan to be Sal Pérez’s backup, Shoppach might be a good choice. He’d probably be easily signable.

"All the boys think she's a guy
She's got crazy Frenchy eyes."

1. No we have enough other good OF prospects coming up(Eibner, Cain, Starling amongst others) and practically no other 3B.

2. Yes, he’s still young, still has great stuff, still is getting K’s suffered from a high run enviroment and his main problem is mechanical, which can be fixed.

3. Yep. and its probably the better decision. Rather have him playing every day than once a week.

4. BP guy. believe there are injury concerns.

5. nugh, maybe? its close, 5-8 range. I feel like the farm season this year is comparable to the farm two years ago. The talent is there and theres a LOT of talent, but most of that talent either treaded water, regressed, or was at low levels. I think next year could be a big breakout year for the farm again and possibly(I know this is blasphemy) be even better than the farm from last year.

I was with you on us having another phenomenal system, but then I got to thinking.

There’s so much talent at AA/AAA that will be at the ML level if they turn it up I’m not sure we could have a top farm system.

Any pitcher or position player at AA or higher to end this year who puts it all together is a near lock to lose rookie eligibility, except for Clint Robinson or Wil Myers (but I think if Myers does rake he’d be up after the deadline).

Plus Arguelles has a good shot to see the majors if he has early success in AA given the ML deal.

Basically, the only way guys like Montgomery, Dwyer, Odorizzi, Colon, Herrera, or Jeffress count towards our system is if they don’t succeed. On the other hand, I don’t view our depth as being sufficient to say that we could have a top ranked farm system without their success.

Wil has significant blocks for the next two years now.

The starters depends on how frisky moore is this season with starting pitching, and if our currrent staff struggles and/or has injuries as well as how they do. The Relief core is getting pretty crowded. There are significant blocks at first, short, third, all three outfield positions plus Cain, starting catcher, dh, and there are four players (5 counting Getz) vying for second base and utility infielder. It is going to be a lot tougher for prospects to get the majors, and some talent should start piling up at the higher levels unless we trade it away.

If he's ready...

Myers is too good to allow to be blocked.

He’ll either be traded, or someone else will be traded.

Melky is gone by the deadline or he’s performed poorly enough to be gone. Cain isn’t a prospect or a consideration relative to Myers. They’ll find the ABs one way or another. Or someone else will.

You think Moore would trade Melky at the deadline?

Did you see what happened at the last trade deadline?

by Scott McKinney on Oct 20, 2011 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

How do you know he didn't try trading Melky, Frenchy, Francis, and Chen?

There may not have been any decent offers in return. Why trade players that are playing well for nothing in return? You would be all over Moore if he traded anyone of those players for two A level C players.

by royal_in_cincinnati on Oct 20, 2011 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

There weren't even any rumors of Moore shopping or even discussing those guys

Not a single rumor. Where there is absolutely no smoke, it is very likely there was no fire.

Nope, I called for just that.

I think the offers for Melky probably did not reflect his value if he starts strong in 2012.

I would imagine most people believe Melky has no shot to repeat 2011. If he starts to, I would think he max trade value would be around late May. Melky doesn’t have an extension. At the same time, the Royals may not trade him because he is likely a Type A free agent next year and the return in a trade would have to reflect that value.

All factors aside, I don’t see any way where Myers lights up AAA and fails to get 130 ABs. While its certainly possible, I think Moore’s history with guys he views as major leaguers suggests that Myers will see substantial ML time if he performs.

That’s a huge if, and not one Moore should have banked on.

Your comment was in reply to a comment about the likelihood of Moore trading Melky next summer. But I don’t think there’s any relationship between Melky and Myers. Even trading Melky wouldn’t open a spot for Myers. If Melky is traded, Cain becomes the CFer because he’s the only guy who could play the position (other than bench players like Maier and Dyson). So in order for Myers to get MLB AB’s in 2012 either Gordon or Francoeur would have to be benched or moved. Do you think he’s going to trade Francoeur with a 1 1/2 years left on his contract? Yeah, I don’t either. Gordon? Yeah, I could see him making that mistake. Maybe trade Butler and then move Gordon to DH? Yeah, I could see him making that mistake.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

1. I have read that Cuthbert is already thicker through his lower half. I have read comps to Miguel Cabrera in body type. If that is the case, he might start at 3B, but will be moved to RF or 1B by his mid 20s.
2. Monty is still elite, and has elite stuff. He is HUGE on the mound, and will figure it out.
4. Cabrera or Cain should be traded this offseason, but if they are both here, they should both be in the outfield. Yost HAS to figure out how to use all 4 outfielders this year. Cain is very good defensively, but might strikeout too much.
4. Herrera has Starter stuff, but not the frame for it. If he could stay healthy he would still be a starter. He will be a very good bullpen arm for a few years.
5. I still see the Royals as a top 4-5 farm system. They have VERY high ceiling players in the lower minors, and several future MLB regulars in the mid to upper minors. Very talented system.
